Altars of Summoning is an activity that was introduced in Season of the Witch.

Overview

Hidden within the Court of Savathûn are the Altars of Summoning, a hidden oubliette where Savathûn, the Witch Queen has imprisoned large amounts of powerful creatures for future use. Following her posthumous direction, her Ghost Immaru directs the Vanguard into the oubliette, so that they can slay the beings within as tribute for Eris Morn, God of Vengeance.

Objectives

• Enter the Altars of Summoning

Delve into the Altars of Summoning, hidden beneath Savathûn’s Spire.

• Ritual of Induction

Choose your place in the ritual circle. Invoke the Ritual of Induction to prime the Altars of Summoning.

• Travel To the Next Altar

A new Altar is primed and ready for summoning.

• Make An Offering

Sacrifice a Feeble, Robust, or Powerful Offering at the Altar to summon new adversaries.

• Initiate the Summoning

Cast the final spell needed to summon your adversaries.

One of the following

• Void Keepers: Destroy Void Crystals

Destroy the Void crystals to staunch the flow of Screebs.

• Void Keepers: Destroy the Abominations

Once they’re vulnerable, eliminate the Abominations.

• Void Keepers: Eliminate the Imprisoned Abomination

Defeat the Imprisoned Abomination to collect its tithe.

Or

• Arc Singers: Charge the Arc Crystals

Use a melee attack on the primed Arc crystal. Then use melee attacks on inert crystals to transfer its charge.

• Arc Singers: Invoke Hive Magic

Invoke Hive magic to shatter the Arc Crystals and remove Ei Haaruz’s shield.

• Arc Singers: Defeat Ei Haaruz, Retainer of Savathûn

Defeat Ei Haaruz to collect her tithe.

• Lucent Tribute: Defeat Alak'nar

Defeat Alak’nar, Retainer of Savathûn.

• Harvest and Deposit Burdens of Tribute

Defeat Tribute Bearers to harvest Burdens of Tribute. Deposit Tributes at the Lucent Totems to lower Alak’nar’s shield.

Or

• Taken Reverent: Defeat the Tormentor

Defeat Taken Anomalies and harvest their Essences to lower the Tormentor’s shield.

• Taken Reverent: Harvest Taken Essences

Defeat Taken Anomalies and harvest their Essences.

• Taken Reverent: Deploy Taken Essences

Use the Taken Essences to lower the Tormentor’s shields.

• Ternary Minds: Defeat the Minotaurs

Eliminate the Vex Minotaurs to collect their tithes.

• Ternary Minds: Prevent Vex Sacrifices

Stop the Vex from sacrificing themselves. If they succeed, they will empower Lenses to shield the Minotaurs.

Vex Lenses are granting the Minotaurs resistance. Eliminate them to lower the Minotaur’s shields.

• Solar Hoarders: Reclaim the Solar Crystals

Defeat the Crystal Hoarders and return the Solar crystals.

• Xivu's Talons: Focus the Vulnerable Talon

Damage the vulnerable Talon of Xivu Arath while the other one is shielded.

Invoke Hive magic to force a Talon of Xivu Arath into its material form.

• Xivu's Talons: Defeat the Final Talon of Xivu Arath

Eliminate the final Xivu Arath to collect her tithe.

The fireteam uses the Acolyte's Staff to begin the Ritual of Induction. The Spire's mechanisms turns; the ascent now allowing access to the Oubliette.

• Immaru: You must be the exterminators we ordered. Right this way.

Or alternatively

• Immaru: Welcome to the Hive, glowbug. You ready to do things our way?

Or alternatively

• Immaru: I love to watch you work, killer. Our Lightbearers could learn a thing or two.

Or alternatively

• Immaru: You're in Hive territory now. Live by the sword logic, or die by it.

• Immaru: Glad to see you back on the rampage. Go get some blood on your hands.

• Immaru: Here to kill for power and loot, huh? That's the spirit!

The fireteam uses the Acolyte’s Staff to begin the Ritual of Induction, starting the tithing process.
If successful, they bestow upon themselves Lucent Blessing.

Week 1

The fireteam moves to the primed Altar.

• Ikora: Keep your head on a swivel, Guardian. There's no knowing what Savathûn locked away behind her magical barriers.
• Immaru: Heh heh. There's only one way to find out. Make an offering and hope you can handle whatever comes out.

• Immaru: So, you made it to the oubliette. Big deal. Don't pat yourself on the back just yet. If you wanna juice up your little Hive god, you're gonna have to improve your spellcraft, and quick.

• Immaru: I never expected to see you glowbugs fluttering around down here. I figured this place was too gritty for you. The only thing you love more than cracking skulls is acting self-righteous about it. Relax for once. Have fun getting your hands dirty.

• Immaru: So, you're back. Your trigger finger getting itchy?
• Ikora: The Vanguard is not here to pursue power for its own sake. This mission is a means to an end. Nothing more.
• Immaru: Don't you ever get tired of the same old lies? You get stronger from killing, you're good at it, and you like it.

Week 3

The fireteam moves to the primed Altar.

• Immaru: I don’t know how Xivu Arath found this place, but it's crawling with Wrathborn now.
• Eris Morn (Transformed): The armies of waste and rot are most welcome. Their elimination will only serve to empower our rituals.
• Immaru: You say that now, but once Xivu gets tired of playing with her food, she'll bring out her big guns. And you're not ready for that yet. Not by a long shot.

• Ikora: The arrival of Xivu’s forces are a complication we did not expect. But the Guardian defeated the Wrathborn on the Shore, the Dreaming City, and the Moon. They'll do it again here.
• Xivu Arath: YOU WOULD CLAIM VICTORY OVER ME, WHEN YOUR VERY TOWER IS BUILT ON WAR. YOU ARE BOTH A BLASPHEMY AND MY GREATEST WORSHIPPERS.

• Savathûn: Welcome back, Guardian. I regret being indisposed for your first visit. Nevertheless, you persevered wonderfully. You've almost repaired the damage done by my rash execution. Let's hope your latest efforts are sufficient to save us from the consequences of your heroism.

• Ikora: Guardian, the Hive spellcraft you learned could still be helpful, even without Eris. We know that Savathûn uses these rituals to collect tithes and further her experiments. Completing the rituals before she can will prevent her from continuing her research.

Or alternatively

• Savathûn: I'm surprised to see you back here, Guardian! I thought you'd had your fill of Hive rituals.
• Ikora: We're not here to tithe. We're here to keep that power out of your hands.
• Savathûn: So you're here to kill in the name of spite? How very much like my sister you've become.
• Ikora: We will not be lectured on morality by the Queen of Lies. Vanguard operations will continue. Period.

• Savathûn: I’ve had an oubliette in one form or another for centuries. But it's always been... my little secret. This is the first time I've been able to share it with anyone. And I'm so glad it's you, Guardian. We make quite the team when we work together... don't you think?

The fireteam moves to the Altar of Devotion, Feracity, Flesh, or the Sword.

Week 1

The fireteam prepares before the primed Altar.

• Ikora: I appreciate you stepping up to help Eris, Guardian. After everything the Hive put her through... she needs our support now more than ever.
• Immaru: Anything to keep a lid on her. If she loses her cool, there's no telling what she's capable of.

Or alternatively

• Ikora: Remote scans indicate that the oubliette is larger than we thought. There must be more undiscovered chambers.
• Immaru: Of course. This is Savathûn we're talking about. Even I haven't seen everything in here. Don't worry, you'll get where you need to go. After the boss makes you work for it.

• Immaru: It's funny. I really never fit in with humanity, or the other Ghosts. But when I found Savathûn... it all fell into place. It was like I'd been part of the Hive all along — I just never knew it. Maybe Eris feels the same.

• Immaru: You Guardians are a lot better at these tithing rituals than I thought you'd be. I don't know why I'm so surprised. You spent the last couple centuries making paste out of the Fallen. You've had plenty of practice.

Week 3

The fireteam prepares before the primed Altar.

• Eris Morn (Transformed): These tithes serve one purpose alone: to dethrone the God of War. When the final stroke is landed, and your head rests blinking upon the ground, your final lament shall be of Eris Morn!
• Xivu Arath: MAY YOUR SWORD CONSECRATE OUR SISTERHOOD THROUGH THE BOND OF DEATH! AIAT!

• Savathûn: I built my Spire to delve the powers beyond sword logic. To explore the fusion of magical traditions. But no matter how many experiments I performed, one unifying element remained: death. All power is derived from the ability to deal death — or in your case, circumvent it. All roads lead back to the sword. It's refreshing to see you finally accept that, Guardian.

• Savathûn: Xivu Arath must be fuming right now, wherever she is. To be made mortal again is humbling. Believe me, I know. But my sister can't see the final shape — not yet. She only sees the Bladed Path that leads there. So it falls on me to protect her from her ambition.

• Savathûn: The Vanguard insists that your repeated visits here are to keep me in check. Clipping my wings, so to speak. But deep down, I think you enjoy wielding the logic of the sword. It does validate all those fancy little guns of yours, doesn't it?

• Savathûn: Xivu Arath and I don't always see eye to eye to eye. She's an absolutist. To her, everything is either alive or dead. Swords or lanterns. Deep or Sky. It's a failing she shares with you, Guardian. You're both eternally convinced of the righteousness of your causes. Neither pausing to consider that just because something is a lie... that doesn't mean it can’t also be the truth.

Void Keepers

Imprisoned Abominations arrive.

• Ikora: Screebs incoming, Guardian. Evasive maneuvers suggested.

• Ikora: Brace for waves of Scorn, Guardian. Prepare for area-denial operations.

• Immaru: Screebs make perfect tithes — they off themselves. You just gotta survive long enough to collect.

Void Crystals manifest, bringing with them an influx of Screebs.
The fireteam shatters the Void crystals, exposing the Imprisoned Abominations.
The fireteam defeats the Imprisoned Abominations.

Dkurzii, Plague Spreader arrives.
The fireteam defeats Dkurzii, Plague Spreader.

Arc Singers

Ei Haaruz, Retainer of Savathûn arrives.
Lucent Conduits and a Lightbearer Hive arrive, protecting Arc crystals.

• Ikora: Savathûn must be performing Light experiments on her own brood. Put a stop to it, Guardian.

• Immaru: Hey, I know these guys! Annoying bunch of jerks, if you ask me. Take 'em out already.

The fireteam conducts the Crystalline Charge, and connects the current.
Using the Arc Light from the crystals, the fireteam uses the Acolyte’s Staff to invoke Hive magic. It shatters the Arc crystals and breaks Ei Haaruz’s shield.
The fireteam defeats Ei Haaruz, Retainer of Savathûn.

Lucent Tribute

Alak'nar, Retainer of Savathûn arrives.

• Immaru: Watching you kill other Lightbearers for the sword logic is some top notch irony. Proceed.

• Immaru: You got the Lucent Brood on deck. Boy, are they excited to meet you. You're a real "celebrity" around here.

Or alternatively

• Immaru: Just because they got the Light, doesn't mean the Lucent Brood ain't expendable. That goes for you, too, Guardian.

• Immaru: The Lucent Brood are still getting used to their Light. How about you give them a... personal tutorial.

Axsaeniia, Reverent of the Witness arrives.

• Ikora: The Witch Queen managed to imprison scores of Vex. Take them out before the ritual expires.

• Immaru: I thought the Fallen couldn't get anymore pathetic. Lo and behold, here come the Scorn. Get rid of ‘em.

• Immaru: You're getting a special visit from our rotten neighbors. Show them out.

The fireteam defeats the Crystal Hoarders, taking the Solar Crystals to the plinths.

Xivu's Talons

Xivu Arath’s sigil is projected in the air with soulfire.

• Ikora: Brute force won't work here. Use your spellcraft to lower the Wizards' defenses.

• Immaru: Once these Wizards get their guard up, no amount of firepower’s gonna drop ‘em.

• Immaru: These Wizards never go anywhere alone. You should take ‘em out one at a time.

One of the Talons shifts into thier Shade form; protecting them.
The fireteam uses the Acolyte’s Staff to invoke Hive magic, forcing the Talons out of Shade form.
The fireteam defeats Ir Dollox and Ir Kaza, Talons of Xivu Arath.

Arok'tha

Xivu Arath’s sigil is projected in the air with soulfire.

• Immaru: You're stepping in the middle of a sibling rivalry that's been going on for millennia. Better you than me.

• Immaru: Xivu's Wrathborn are crawling all over. You may have the Light, but she's got numbers on her side. Thin 'em out.

Arok'tha, Sworn to Xivu Arath arrives.

WAR HAS ARRIVED

The fireteam engages Arok'tha.
Weakened, Arok’tha draws up their shields.
Solar Crystals manifest.
The fireteam carries Solar crystals to the plinths, breaking the Arok’tha’s shield.

The ritual goes awry, bringing unpredicatable forces.

Week 1

The fireteam collects their loot.

• Immaru: I know you might not believe Savathûn when she says she's working against the Witness, but that's your own hang-up. She’s too clever to serve somebody like that smoky weirdo. Xivu’s no dope either, but she’s totally committed to sword logic. The Witness was able to manipulate her by telling her what she wanted to hear. It never pays to love something so much, you stop questioning it.

• Immaru: It makes sense that Xivu aligned with the Witness. Xivu never backed down from a fight in her life, and the Witness promised her a big one. But the Witness wants to win without fighting. If Xivu had just realized that, I think she would have joined Savathûn in a heartbeat. That would have been something to see.

• Immaru: The final shape, the way we think about it? It's the winner, the one who's so smart or strong that they beat everybody else. The final shape may not be the most interesting or best looking or whatever, but it's the one who makes it to the finish line, again and again. It's the best at what it does. The Witness's final shape isn't like that. It's just... flat. It's static. It's... a forced ending, like winning a game by turning it off. Forever. Ugh, gives me the heebie-jeebies.

• Ikora: I know the Wrathborn have thrown our plan into doubt, but trust in Eris, and she'll get us through this.
• Xivu Arath: WITH EACH TITHE, OUR SISTER GROWS IN POWER. SHE HAS BEEN SHAPED BY THE BLADE. HER EYES ARE TESTAMENT TO HER SIGHT. SHE SHALL SOON BE BEYOND YOUR CONTROL, LIGHTBEARER.
• Ikora: Eris has never been under my control. Or anyone's. She wields her power on her own behalf. A truth you'll discover soon enough.

• Ikora: Well done, Guardian. Savathûn has endless schemes, and many of them start right here. My Hidden can observe, but it's important that you maintain a forceful Vanguard presence on her throne world. The Witch Queen needs to be reminded that she can't operate with impunity anymore.

• Immaru: What? She tried to invade your throne world. She tried to have me killed!
• Savathûn: Oh, that's just her way of showing affection. I sympathize because, for the first time, her Bladed Path forked. She was bested by a new sword logic. One born of the Sky: chaotic, cooperative... free.
• Immaru: That's just a bunch of fancy words. In the end, it's all just kill or be killed.
• Savathûn: Come now, Immaru. If that were true, would either one of us still be alive?

Gameplay

Altars of Summoning is a three player matchmade activity, launched from the H.E.L.M. The Altars themselves are similar to a Patrol space, where the instance will not end until at least one player is in it. To begin the activity, players can perform the Ritual of Induction at the central pool. Then, they will be directed to one of the Altars, where they can make an offering, which will determine the difficulty of the encounter they are to face. More powerful offerings fill more of the completion bar. There are many different encounters, each with their own mechanics, but they all must be completed within a 7 minutes timer. Once the bar is filled, the God of Vengeance will arrive to collect the accumulated tithes, rewarding the players with loot and reputation. After a few seconds, the Ritual of Induction can be performed again to restart the cycle.

Ritual of Induction

Around the central pool of the Altars, there will be several Hive runes floating, each interactable. The first player that Invokes Hive Magic under a rune begins a 15 second timer, after which the ritual will complete. However, if all players stand under the three runes different from all others, they will receive a Lucent Blessing, which will restore some of their Special and Heavy ammo after the completion of each encounter.

Ritual Anomalies

After the completion of an encounter, a Ritual Anomaly encounter can occur. These are simpler battles than regular encounters, but must be completed in a shorter time. Successfully finishing the Anomaly will immediately reward loot and offerings and add to the activity's completion bar.
