The Vex Mythoclast is an exotic weapon obtainable in Destiny by completing the Vault of Glass raid on Hard mode. [1] It is a unique one-of-a-kind fusion rifle that fits into the Primary Weapon Slot. Unlike other fusion rifles, it has no charge time; a single squeeze of the trigger fires a shot, and it is capable of sustained fire, making it behave more like an auto rifle while benefiting from fusion rifle perks on armor. It also has the ability to deal precision damage, unlike the other fusion rifles.

Lore

This weapon defies all known rules of space, time, and matter itself. Found within the Vault of Glass, it has been somehow crafted for human use, despite the fact that the Vex would have no need for such a weapon. It appears to be a modified version of the Vex Slap Rifle which can fire more powerful bursts of energy at a fast rate. Although technically classified as a Fusion rifle, the Mythoclast is more of an auto rifle, able to mow down targets with the greatest of ease. It is unknown exactly how the weapon works, but it is thought that its energy comes from time and space itself, acting as a sort of faucet for energy released by the Big Bang that can be directed to destroy any target. It appears to create its own energy from nothing, breaking one of the most fundamental rules of science.

In fact, some say that the weapon is a sign that the Vex will either become subservient to humanity or that the Vex will control humanity, citing the fact that the weapon is crafted for human hands, yet is clearly from far in the future. Still others say that the weapon is actually a physical tap directly into the Vex network, possibly manifested in reality by a rogue element of the Vex central intelligence. Such theorists also claim that this rogue or rampant strain of the Vex net may also be responsible for the apparent abandonment of Mercury by the Vex, and may be limiting the progress of the Virgo Prohibition against the Cabal on Mars by scrambling commands sent to Axis Minds by the central mainframe. If this weapon is another product of a rampant strain, it is in the best interest of humanity to make contact with such a strain and ally ourselves with it. However, it is very possible that doing so could prove disastrous for the entire universe. Theories for what this possible rogue element could be range from a remnant of whatever created the Vex to the Golden Age Warmind of Mercury, who could’ve gone rampant. The Vanguard highly discourages speculation on such subjects, but it happens anyway.

Upgrades

The Vex Mythoclast has an upgrade tree similar to other Exotic weapons. It possesses the Aggressive Ballistics, Linear Compensator, and Smart Drift Control upgrades on its first column of upgrade nodes. The next non-damage upgrade is Zen Moment, an upgrade that causes the Mythoclast to increase stability upon causing damage. Its next column of three contains the Extended Mag upgrade, increasing the magazine to 35, the Send It upgrade, increasing range and accuracy, and the Lightweight upgrade, giving the player +2 Agility while wielding it. After the second column, the Vex Mythoclast unlocks the Crowd Control upgrade, causing it to deal increased damage after every kill.

Gameplay

The Mythoclast is a very powerful weapon in both PvE and PvP. In general gameplay, it possesses a high rate of fire and a high damage value. With the House of Wolves expansion, the maximum Attack values for the Mythoclast and other Exotics have been increased to 365 with an expenditure of 1500 Glimmer, 25 weapon parts and an Exotic Shard [2]. Due to its high rate of fire and low stability, the Mythoclast is recognized as having a high amount of recoil. In PvP it is widely considered to be one of the most powerful weapons. The Vex Mythoclast possesses a very high precision damage rate, at 1.5x, making it a very effective weapon for getting headshots. It is very common to run out of ammo quickly with the Mythoclast, as it has a high fire rate and only a 21 magazine. It is this reason that the Extended Mag upgrade is one of the more popularly used ones. The Vex Mythoclast can carry a maximum ammo reserve of 175 (extended mag, 147 for 21-round magazine), but in a recent update has been increased to 200. Previously before the update, with armor that allows a player carry more ammo for fusion rifles, it was 227, but after the update, was increased to 250. In a later update, this was again changed to 161 (with 203 in reserve with Fusion Rifle ammo-carrying armor mods), and finally changed in Update 2.0 with Extended Mag changed to 28 instead of 35 with a reserve of 140 (with Fusion Rifle ammo carrying armor mods, this changes to 163). The Attack value was also changed from 365 to 170 Attack.

Trivia

  • The name "Mythoclast" is derived from the Greek words "mûthos", or "fable/legend" and klastós or "broken in pieces". Thus the literal definition of the name is "Breaker of Myths" or “Destroyer of Myths”.
  • The Mythoclast is the only primary exotic weapon that does solar damage.
  • After Update 2.0, the in-game screen of the weapon mistakenly shows a magazine size of three rounds.
  • The Ishtar Collective may have gathered data on this weapon and its function and inner workings as part of their Infinity Initiative in the late Golden Age, leading to the development of Pocket Infinity
  • The weapon is forged from the same materials as active Vex in the Ishtar Sink and is considered an active, if non-sentient, part of their neuro-electronic network.
  • This is the only Vault of Glass weapon not forged by Kabr or a member of the Lost Legion.
