Thorn is an Exotic Hand Cannon and one of the Weapons of Sorrow. It is most likely named after the thorn-like spikes on it. The weapon is sleek, dark black, with many spikes or "thorns" adorning the sides, facing the front of the weapon. The projectiles shot from it also resemble giant daggers or "thorns". It was acquired via the Exotic bounty, "A Light in the Dark". Thorn returned to Destiny 2 during Season of the Drifter and was acquired through a hidden Quest, “Independent Study”. As of Beyond Light it is only acquirable through the Monument To Lost Lights.

Thorn was once called Rose, and it belonged to the Guardian Rezyl Azzir. Once a noble hero, Rezyl faced against the Hive Wizard Xyor, the Blessed and her Knight familiar at the Hellmouth.[1] Having been locked in battle for days with the Hive, the Titan took down the Knight with Rose and successfully escaped the Hellmouth. He would then graft his Hand Cannon with the Hive's fragmented chitin bones as a trophy; not knowing that Xyor's whispers would echo from them as they corrupted Rezyl's mind and his hand cannon; the latter which became reborn as a Weapon of Sorrow known as Thorn.[2]

Rezyl Azzir eventually gave into the bones' whispers, becoming Dredgen Yor after looking to the Hive to try finding more ways to defeat the Darkness. His hand cannon also became ravenous for consuming Light, which Yor had kept fed when he began wantonly murdering countless Guardians and their Ghosts.[3] Whether before or after it was built, Thorn became bound to the now Xyor, the Unwed; killing her removes the link and enables Guardians to safely use Thorn without risk of corruption.[4]

After Dredgen Yor's fall, cleansed replicas of the Thorn were created by the Shadows of Yor, a group of Guardians who idolize the fallen Guardian. Their activity raised enough concern for Shin Malphur, Yor's killer, to take up arms against the Shadows. A year after the Red War, a Shadow of Yor known as Callum Sol was found and killed by Shin as an example made to warn the other Dredgens. The Young Wolf would find the spot of the Shadow's final death, retrieving weapon parts from his remains for The Drifter to craft a new replacement for Thorn known as Malfeasance.

It is later revealed that Shin's killing of Callum Sol was in fact a trap to bait Guardians that could not resist their temptations of the Darkness, and that Shin Malphur is actually a member of the Shadows of Yor himself. Having taken upon himself to prevent a whole generation of Guardians from following in Yor's footsteps, Shin (under the identity of Zyre Orsa) founded the Shadows along with Teben Grey, Zana Maas, Jonah Pavic, Braga Yasuul and Callum Sol as a means to uncover potential Lightbearers going rogue after participating in the Drifter's Gambit and dissuade them from falling into temptation. They would also look for a Guardian capable of resisting their temptations; which they would find with the Young Wolf after they killed Enkaar, the Anointed, an infamous Hive weapon master who crafted the original blueprint of the Weapons of Sorrow, and reforged a broken copy of Thorn without succumbing to its corruption.

During Season of Opulence, Shin entrusted the Guardian with Yor's original Thorn. In their hands, the Thorn would first be cleansed to reveal the original Rose underneath, and then extensively modified and charged with Light to become Lumina.

At some unknown point, a Warlock named Jana-14 obsessively researching the Thorn and other parts of Yor's knowledge managed to reverse-engineer the hand cannon's Mark of the Devourer, which had accidently discharged its corruption onto fellow researcher Carro and forced him to suffer a slow and agonizing death. Jana-14 had her fellow researchers conduct a postmortem autopsy of Carro's body in secret without the Vanguard's approval to gain more information. Collecting tissue samples from his body yielded an explosive, contagious version of the Weapon of Sorrow's corruption, applying it to a pair of Warlock gauntlets to create the Necrotic Grip. Sometime during the war against the House of Salvation, the Guardian would obtain the Grips, and would discover its ability to synergize with the Thorn itself, enabling the gun's rounds to take on the traits of the Grips' poison.

Thorn, like every exotic in Destiny, has a "signature perk". Thorn's is called "Mark of the Devourer", which allows rounds fired from the weapon to pierce the target and cause lingering damage over time, [5] which, in PvP, could potentially prevent a fleeing Guardian's shield from regenerating quickly enough for a kill-shot to be delivered. This perk has since been nerfed from its Year 1 iteration.

Augmented through dark practices, Thorn was once a hero's weapon. Its jagged frame hints at a sinister truth: a powerful connection to the unutterable sorceries of the Hive.

The legend of Thorn is bound to the rise and fall of Dredgen Yor, a Guardian whose name is remembered with disgust and shame. The weapon was thought destroyed... but rumors of its existence still haunt the wilds.[3]

Catalyst

The Exotic Catalyst for Thorn was first released during Season of the Wish and can be obtained as a random drop through ritual activity completions (Strikes, Crucible and Gambit) once the weapon has been acquired. Once obtained, it requires 700 kills with the weapon to complete.

The catalyst, once completed, will grant the following additional perks:

  • +15 Range
  • +5 Stability
  • +5 Airborne Effectiveness
  • Refined Soul:
    • Grants bonus range and stability. Dealing a final blow or absorbing a Remnant grants additional increased weapon range, as well as increased mobility and handling for a short time.

Trivia

  • The Thorn has been labeled as the "yin" of the Destiny universe (as opposed to the Last Word, which is the "yang").[6]
  • Thorn was originally described as being one of the loot in Charlemagne's Vault, a chamber in the Dust Palace that does not appear in the final version of Destiny.
