Destiny 2 is an open-world multiplayer first-person shooter title video game developed by Bungie. It is the sequel to the shared-worlds FPS Destiny, and was released on September 6, 2017 on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms. It was released on October 24, 2017 for PC, initially through Blizzard Entertainment's Battle.net service.[6][2] Due to Bungie splitting from Activision on January 10, 2019 and is now self-publishing the game, Destiny 2 has been available on Steam since October 1, 2019 and has since been removed from the Battle.net service. As part of Bungie's plans to expand Destiny 2 to new platforms after their acquisition by Sony on July 15, 2022, Destiny 2 was added to the Epic Games Store on August 23, 2022. It was released on November 19, 2019 for the Google Stadia cloud gaming service, but was discontinued on January 18, 2023 following the shutdown of the Google Stadia servers. It was released on December 8, 2020 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
Plot
- Main article: The Red War
Humanity's last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. He has stripped the city's Guardians of their power, and forced the survivors to flee. You will venture to mysterious, unexplored worlds of our solar system to discover an arsenal of weapons and devastating new combat abilities. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity's scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.[7][8][9]
The game's story focuses on the Light, what happens when it gets taken from the Guardians, the lengths they'll go to to get it back, and Ghaul's coveting of it. The Darkness is not explained until Shadowkeep.[10]
On Mercury, the Ghost of a legendary Warlock is found on the planet's sands. She, and the Guardian are the only hope to prevent the Vex from taking over everything.
The Traveler's awakening of its long sleep was a sign of good things to come, and of dark threats. On Mars, an ancient Golden Age's weapon Rasputin awakens, and below the Red planet surface, an ancient evil resurface.
On the Prison of Elders, a group of dangerous criminals, led by Uldren Sov, escape of the prison, striking down the Vanguard of Hunters, Cayde-6. On the Tangled Shore, a pursuit of revenge, is taking in motion.
On the Moon, an ancient evil awakens after centuries of slumber. It brings the omen of the end of everything.
On the iced lands of Europa a Fallen House is growing in power, leaded by a dreaded Baroness. They wield the power of the Darkness, to carry over their plans.
On the reappared Mars, the Witch Queen has settled her Throne World. The Guardian must explore this realm of madness to uncover its secrets... and discover horrible truths.
The Witness, sworn enemy of the Guardians, and of everything, has finally arrived. Its newest Disciple, the Emperor Calus leads an invasion to a previously hidden city on Neptune, to find a long forgotten artifact, the Veil. The Guardian must reach this artifact before Calus, or everything will be doomed.
Decades, centuries, millennia and eons, all of it was for this moment. The Witness has transformed the Traveler, and gone somewhere beyond reach. Thanks to the Ahamkara's wish, now, the path is open, and now, is to you, the Guardian, to finish what you started that day, when you for first resurrected. From your resting place, on Old Russia, on the ruins of civilization on the Cosmodrome, to the Moon deepest and darkest regions, to the furthest corners of this long-abandoned Sol System, and to realms beyond all believe. Facing all sorts of enemies and foes; from mere ambitious pirates, to time-altering war machines, and to even eldritch, nightmarish horrors in the Hive. Now, is time to face off the one being to caused all this, and show the galaxy, and all of the universe what you, and the Guardians, are really made off. It is time, to become legend.
The Final Shape was initially expected to release in February 2024, but due to quality concerns for the project in general in October 2023, the release was pushed to June 2024.[11] To cover the delay period, Bungie released a free update called Into the Light in April 2024, adding new activities and weapons to prepare for The Final Shape. The Final Shape sees events taking place in the Pale Heart, a space within the Traveler opened by the Witness, and includes the return of Cayde-6 (with Nathan Fillion reprising this role). This expansion has been stated by Bungie to be the culmination of the ten years of Destiny's first saga, the "Light and Darkness Saga".[12]
Following The Final Shape, Bungie plans to change their release model from a large expansion with smaller seasons, to two moderate sized expansions per year, starting mid 2025 with "Codename Apollo", followed by "Codename Behemoth" in early 2026.[13]

Features
Destiny 2 included 4 new Patrol zones two of which were removed, Nessus, Io, Titan, and the European Dead Zone, the largest open world ever made by Bungie, filled to the brim with new enemies, weapons, armor, and activities such as public events, dungeons known as "Lost Sectors", mini-quests called adventures, and much more to do and explore.
The game features downloadable content, but the DLC will be released after the base game.[14] The first two expansion packs will be centered around the cult of the exiled Warlock Osiris, as well as the ancient Warmind Rasputin for expansions 1 and 2, respectively. The third and largest expansion will focus on the death of Cayde-6 and hunting down the barons of the Tangled Shore. Players that have preordered Destiny 2 with the year 1 expansion pass will automatically receive access to the first two expansions upon release for the general public to purchase.
Character aesthetics such as face, sex, markings, etc. can be preserved and carried over for old players from Destiny 1, as long as those characters have both reached Level 20 and have completed The Black Garden Story mission. Everything aside from aethstetics do not transfer over to Destiny 2, in order to make the game feel like a fresh start and not a direct continuation of the original game. "Veteran accounts" are given "honors that reflect their Destiny 1 accomplishments". The Grimoire does not feature. The lore is implemented directly throughout Destiny 2. This includes a scanning feature that largely replaces the old system.[15] In Forsaken, the Triumphs tab was added, allowing players to accrue lore throughout the game, functioning like an in-game version of Grimoire from the original game.
Destiny 2 featured an all-new cinematic campaign with a host of new Story missions and cutscenes that form a story unlike that seen in its predecessor. The first mission, Homecoming, sends Guardians on a journey to take back The Last City and the Traveler from the Red Legion, led by Dominus Ghaul, who has a brief cameo in the first mission, explaining his intentions.

New competitive multiplayer
The Crucible functions differently in Destiny 2. All game modes feature two teams of four for every game mode. In-game, there is a new HUD that gives the player information on the enemy team, like when their Super is ready, or when and where they picked up ammo for their power weapons. There are also brand new maps and game modes. One of the new game modes, for example, is called Countdown, which is the first attack-defend game mode in the Crucible, similar to Call of Duty's Search and Destroy. The radar is also modified, with the detection radius being fixed, as opposed to it scanning until it finds an enemy. Modes/Playlists:
- Supremacy (Quickplay Playlist)
- Clash (Quickplay Playlist)
- Control (Quickplay Playlist)
- Countdown (Competitive Playlist)
- Survival (Competitive Playlist)
New challenging Raids
Destiny 2 featured a Raid known as Leviathan, taking place within the enormous ship of the same name. Two Raid Lairs were added during the Year 1 expansions, Eater of Worlds with Curse of Osiris and Spire of Stars with Warmind. With Forsaken, a new Raid known as Last Wish was added. Season of the Forge added a new Raid called Scourge of the Past ,and the Season of Opulence featured Crown of Sorrow. In the Shadowkeep expansion, the Raid, Garden of Salvation was added. With the expansion, Beyond Light, Deep Stone Crypt was added, while putting all of the above Raids except Last Wish and Garden of Salvation in the Destiny Content Vault. During Beyond Light's year, in Season of the Splicer, the popular Raid from Destiny 1, Vault of Glass has returned. With The Witch Queen expansion, the Vow of the Disciple Raid was added. Season of Plunder brings back another Destiny 1 classic Raid, King's Fall. When the Lightfall expansion came out, the Root of Nightmares Raid arrived, where we finally encountered a character we have heard about a long time ago.
New Patrol modes
Patrol activities in Destiny 2 feature all activities from the Patrol Mode of its predecessor: patrol missions, Public Events, materials, and loot chests. However, there are also be new heroic objectives, Adventures, treasure maps and Lost Sectors to explore. To assist in exploring these areas, players are able to use a map that marks all activities.
New travel destinations
Destiny 2 features four new destinations: European Dead Zone, Titan, Io, and Nessus, with Mercury and Hellas Basin on Mars being added with Curse of Osiris and Warmind respectively. Year 2 added the Tangled Shore and The Dreaming City locations. The Season of Opulence added The Tribute Hall. Each feature their own detailed environments.
Weapon system
Before patch 2.0.0, the weapon slots in Destiny 2 were occupied by Kinetic, Energy, and Power weapons respectively. Kinetic guns had no elemental attribute, otherwise functioning exactly as energy weapons, which were charged with Void, Solar or Arc light. Some special weapons in Destiny, like fusion rifles and sniper rifles were moved into the power category. Weapons in this category were elementally charged and included weapons like rocket launchers and grenade launchers.
Subclasses
All classes in Destiny 2 each get another exclusive subclass to replace the Sunsinger, Defender, and Bladedancer. Warlocks get access to the Dawnblade, which allows them to wield a sword of fire which enables them to send of waves of flames at enemies. Titans get access to the Sentinel, which allows them to wield a shield that they can use to block damage and as either a blunt melee weapon or ranged throwing weapon. Hunters get access to the Arcstrider, which allows them to wield a spear of electricity that they can use to quickly slash everything on their path. There are a total of 9 subclasses in the game. In Forsaken a new tree has been added for each subclass. Hunters got for the Gunslinger the Blade Barrage, for the Nightstalker the Spectral Blades and for the Arcstrider the Whirling Guard. Titans got for the Striker the Thundercrash, for the Sentinel the Banner Shield and for the Sunbreaker the Burning Maul. Warlocks got for the Dawnblade the Well of Radiance, for the Stormcaller the Chaos Reach and for the Voidwalker the Nova Warp. There are also some new subclasses from Beyond Light which are known as Stasis, this includes the Revenant for the Hunter, the Behemoth for the Titans and the Shadebinder for the Warlocks. Following the release of Lightfall a new subclass know as Strand was released with new abilites for all classes. This included the Hunter Threadrunner, Warlock Broodweaver, and Titan Berserker.

Development
Work began on the game in November 2014, just after the release of the original game.[16] It was reportedly rebooted in May of 2016.[17]
Destiny 2 was revealed worldwide on March 30, 2017.[8][9] The Destiny 2 Beta for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 lasted from July 18 through July 23, 2017. A PC version of the beta was open from August 28 to August 31.[4]
Destiny 2's eighth expansion, The Final Shape, was released in June, 2024. After this, development of Destiny 2 was downscaled. While Destiny 2 will continue to receive content, it will no longer receive seasons or episodes, and instead receive two smaller expansions per year.[18]
As of September 2024, the majority of Bungie's staff remained focused on Destiny 2, with a comparatively smaller team working on Marathon.[19]
