"It is not enough to kill the enemy. The act of violence must become self-sustaining."
— Weapon description, prior to The Dark Below

Pocket Infinity is an Exotic Fusion Rifle introduced in Destiny. It can be obtained by completing all the stages of the Exotic weapon bounty Shattered Memory Fragment. The weapon was created from the research of Fireteam Tuyet, a group of Guardians that traversed the Ishtar Sink in search of Vex knowledge or tech they could reverse-engineer.[1] Their efforts apparently bore fruit but no further progress could be made before the Vex were alerted to their presence and killed off all members of the fireteam.

Grimoire

"You cannot shake the feeling that this is less a weapon than a doorway."

Fireteam Tuyet died in the Ishtar Sink, hunting the secrets of the Vex. They must have come too close to something precious, for the Vex descended on them with their typical inscrutable, thorough violence.

But their sacrifice was not in vain. The data they gathered helped forge the Pocket Infinity. Properly modified, the weapon should be capable of devastating output on just a single charge cycle.

The Infinity's mechanisms have proven difficult, if not impossible, to replicate en masse. It is conceivable that the weapon draws its energy from the Vex networks...an ominous possibility. So be wary with it.

Gameplay

Cosmetically, the weapon has a rather simple minimalist look compared to other Exotic weapons, but it also has a very loud noticeable sound so most players will know if one is being used somewhere. Pocket Infinity's special ability, when sufficiently upgraded, is full-automatic fire when charged. While this feature may seem highly desirable in a fusion rifle, its rather meager baseline ammo capacity of 3 rounds makes this feature problematic, even with the potential to return missed shots to the magazine. This limitation can however, be offset once the magazine's capacity is upgraded. As a possible side effect of being full auto, this gun suffers from ridiculous recoil for a fusion rifle that can easily get out of hand.

After charging up and firing a burst, if the trigger command is held down, the length of the burst will be extended to fire the rest of the magazine with no need for additional charge until the trigger is released. Each shot after the initial burst will inflict less damage down to a minimum cap (approximately 60% at the 4th burst). A "missed shot" from Pocket Infinity appears to mean "a single fusion burst where only one of the total bolts fired in the burst missed". This means that ammo can be returned to the magazine even if some of the burst hit an enemy. Regardless of this bonus, it may be advisable to bring an ammo synthesis or two as the weapon will eat through Special ammunition quickly if the player isn't watchful. This ability of refunding rounds that do not strike a target is identical to another Year 1 Exotic weapon.

The current trait "Extended Mag" replaced the former trait "Speed Reload" in December 2014, around the time of The Dark Below's release.[2] Speed Reload in turn, replaced the original trait "Enhanced Battery" 2 months prior in October 2014, where it had a maximum magazine capacity of 8 instead of 5.[3]

Trivia

  • The logo graphic for the Pocket Infinity trait implies that the weapon may have been originally intended to be a Rasputin-related device.
  • Pocket Infinity is currently the only exotic weapon that did not go beyond year one of Destiny 1 in terms of power level usability. Meaning, the last time it was truly viable for an endgame activity was roughly Fall of 2015.
