- — The Witness to the Guardian, upon banishing the Nightmare of Crota
Nightmare of Crota, Son of Oryx is a Nightmare of Crota, Son of Oryx that appears in the Shadowkeep expansion. It appears as one of the three major Nightmares, along with Nightmare of Dominus Ghaul and Nightmare of the Fanatic. He appeared three times in the expansion, having a more prominent, central appearance in the activity Nightmare Hunt: Despair, on the Moon.[1]
Biography[edit]
The Nightmare of Crota is one of the first Nightmares encountered by the Guardian. After being unable to get closer to the Lunar Pyramid due to an energy spike too heavy to pass through, the Nightmare of Crota will form from it and engage the Guardian, but to their Ghost's surprise. After a long fight, the Guardian manages to down the Nightmare of Crota, only for it to regenerate and call in Nightmares of Ghaul and Fikrul. Fortunately, Eris managed to teleport the Guardian away.[2]
Eventually, the Guardian creates a set of Dreambane Armor that allows them to enter the Pyramid. After successfully destroying the Nightmares of Dominus Ghaul and Fikrul, the Fanatic, the Guardian finally confronts the final Nightmare of one of their most dangerous foes. History repeats as they defeat the Nightmare of Crota like his final defeat, allowing the Guardian to reach the center of the Pyramid, gaining an audience with the Darkness itself.[3]
Following this encounter, the Guardians, under Eris Morn's instructions, conduct Nightmare Hunts to keep the Pyramid's influence at bay. The Pyramid's power continually brings back the Nightmare of Crota, representing the Essence of Despair, forcing the Guardians to battle with the Hive Prince again. After a daring struggle, the Guardians use Crota's blades again to weaken and then finally banish the Nightmare.[1]
Years later, the Guardian confronted the three Nightmares of Crota, Ghaul, and Fikrul again while searching the Pyramid for signs of the lost Ghost, Balthazar.[4]
Appearance[edit]
The Nightmare of Crota looks much different than his original appearance in Crota's End, with a far more physical look with chitin and armor, instead of the ethereal and unique appearance he last appeared with. Along with that, his color scheme was changed from light green with some yellow hue on his horns, to pure green armor with a dark green skin color underneath. Along with this, he is slimmer and slightly smaller compared to his original appearance, with his proportions being more in line with other Ultra rank Knights. Crota's head also was slimmed down and the horns were adjusted upwards with added chin guards around his mouth, with his mouth properly looking more in line with most Hive.
Trivia[edit]
- In the promotional trailer for Shadowkeep, the Nightmare of Crota's appearance looked identical to Thalnok, Fanatic of Crota, which had a brownish skin color like most Hive instead of the solid dark green skin color his gameplay model has.
- The Nightmare of Crota in the game has a solid body that looks much more physical than Crota's "ghostly"-like original form in The Dark Below.
- The reason behind this would be due to the Nightmare appearing as Crota did during the Great Disaster, but the one as seen in his Throne World is weaker due to a matter concerning a dispute between a Knight of Oryx and a Knight of Xivu Arath.[5]
