Zâtrox, the Necromancer is an Ascendant Hive Necromancer, wielder of Corruption and an esteemed member of Shin'ra's Court of Sorrow. A practitioner of Necromancy, his skills of raising the dead were unmatched, giving him quite the reputation as a heretic within the Hidden Swarm and the Weavers of Sorrow. He serves as the final boss of the Shadow's Dawn Dungeon.
Biography[edit]
Ancient Times[edit]
- "I was but a mere Thrall, grasping for whatever tribute I could find. I was too weak. But I knew that I was not born to be a warrior to wield mighty blades to cut down my foes. So instead I chose to become a scholar, to take the tribute to enhance mind over blade."
- — Zâtrox
Zâtrox was born as a meager Thrall, grasping for whatever scraps he could find just to satiate himself. He knew that he was not destined to be a warrior, in which he would instead hon his mind and study the secrets of the Deep, even the heretical art of necromancy in which he sight to use to reshape the fates of others.[1][2]
His practice would earn the attention of Shin'ra, the Sorrow-Maker, a powerful High Priest of the Hive, who saw Zâtrox's potential to use for future uses. Zâtrox in turn saw him as a better Oryx, a true maker rather than a lord of shapes. After being indoctrinated into the forces of the Sorrow-Maker, Zâtrox would witness the construction of the High Forge and the establishment of the Court of Sorrow. While he stated it to be imperfect for it rested between the domains of the Sky and Deep, Shin'ra reaffirmed that it would be the testament of change and soon those boundaries would break before the walls of the High Forge.[3][4]
While he wasn't present during the hunt for the ancient Leviathans, Zâtrox desired to have taken part in it.[5] While he desired to share his idea of the Cult of Unmaking with the Maker, he would instead be replaced by another one of Shin'ra's Celebrants, Storgor, which infuriated Zâtrox to a boiling point.[6]
Sol Incursions[edit]
Prior to the arrival of the Weavers in the Sol System, Shin'ra made preparations for Zâtrox to act as a failsafe and to protect the final deaths of those within the Court of Sorrow and resurrect them in preparation of the Final Shape. [7] As the Nephilim approached Sol, he basked in the inevitability of the Final Shape, showing his eagerness to bathe in he Traveler's blood.[8]
Following the subsequent defeat of Shin'ra during the Corruption's Insurgence, Zâtrox began to rally the members of the the Weavers within the Pit of Decay in a bid of revenge against the Guardians aboard the Nephilim.[9][10] Even though he would fall against the Guardians, Zâtrox survived his encounter against the Lightbearers with his power of Necromancy and continued his efforts to revive the Court of Sorrow.[9]
During the Clash of the Hive Gods, Zâtrox employed one of his Deathsingers, by the name of Ir Mazleth, the Unholy Silence to invade and take back control of the Temple of Exultation from the Guardians. He along with Shin'ra believed that the temple was not worth to lose to the Guardians, stating that it was not just a place for unlimited power, but a strategic position for his future plans.[11]
Haunting of the Nephilim[edit]
During the Festival of TBA, the Nephilim had become overrun by Nightmares and Headless Ones due to the experimentations of the Weavers use of Nightmare Essence and the lack of someone to command the Nephilim's derelict state. Knowing the threat that they pose, Zâtrox would employ the Guardians to assist him with removing the Nightmares and Headless Ones from the Nephilim and to stop the Weaver's attempts to gather an army to conquer Sol.[12]
