(Mission Begins)

Tasked with investigating the source of Taken power, the Guardian transmats onto the Dreadnaught where they find Dread units under the command of Vrhiisk, Seeker of Power stationed around Taken Blights.

  • Sloane: This is as close as I can get you — look out!

Engaging with the Dread forces, the Blights suddenly dissipate as large eyes manifest across the location.

Dread Commander retreats.

Following the retreat of Vrhiisk, the Guardian advances further up the Dreadnaught where they defeat the remaining Dread lead by the Follower of Power to dispel the resonance shield that surrounded an Ascendant portal.

  • Sloane: Better follow it. I'm no expert, not like Eris, but that looked ritual. Without the Witness, what rituals do the Dread do? What do they need? Can't be anything good.

Entering the portal to travel into the Ascendant Plane, the Guardian returns to the material realm.

  • Sloane: I'm sure that Taken power I've been sensing — the one the Taken and the Dread have both been pursuing — is closer than ever. You know how it goes. There's no chance the Dread are a separate mission. It's too much of a coincidence.

Arriving to the Trenchway, the Guardian locates Vrhiisk and witnesses the Subjugator turn on its own Dread kin alongside the Dire Taken.

  • Sloane: What on earth — turning on its own troops? Something's gone wrong here.

The Guardian defeats Blight Sentinels.

A blight is vulnerable!

Obtaining the Taken curse, the Guardian strengthens it by defeating Dire Taken.

The curse upon you grows heavy with power

Vrhissk retreats into a newly manifested Taken Blight.

The planes destabilize…

The Guardian is pulled into a Blighted Cyst where they re-engage with Vrhissk.

  • Sloane: Guardian? Hey. Guardian! Stay with me. Where you are, readings are haywire all over the place. Get out as soon as you can.

In due course, the Guardian successfully defeats Vrhissk, however they would be unable to escape the Blighted Cyst.

  • Sloane: I still can't get a good fix on you. Do what you have to do to break out — it's all up to you. I trust you.

As they are continuously transported to different locations, the Guardian interacts with the correct Hive symbols

Taken energies strengthen…

Eventually, through interacting with Hive runes, the Guardian escapes these tears in reality and returns to the Dreadnaught.

  • Sloane: Glad you got out of that one safe. It's one thing after another here. The Dread are the big unknown. The Taken I understand, more or less. They crave leadership. A will, imposed on them. They're drawn to that power. Even if it's not a bigger Taken, it could make a bigger Taken for them. But the Dread? What do they want? The obvious answer is power, but I wonder if it's that simple.

Traversing across the Dreadnaught, the Guardian claims a corrupted fragment close to a Taken Blight

Taken energies unwind, opening the path!

As the Taken Blight dissipates to reveal a path, the Guardian travels down this pathway arrive to the Invasion Bay.

  • Sloane: Something's still bothering me. That Taken energy you're headed toward — it's not flickering any more. It was blinking in and out. Then it was waxing and waning. Now it's just there… That's it. It's been getting stronger. And it's not just because you're closer.

Across a narrow room, the Guardian destroys three Void crystals to open the gateway to the room containing the source of this Taken power.

The seal is broken!
  • Sloane: I'm not going to tell you to turn around. We can't just leave it alone. Where there was one Dread commander, more will show up. You need to investigate and do what you do best. All the same, be prepared for heavy resistance. Don't go in half-cocked. Reload your weapons, take stock of the area. You know the drill. Come back alive. Whatever it takes.

The Guardian approaches the gateway to the Core of Corruption.

  • Sloane: This room's got Hive magic all over it. I swear those runes look familiar... Where are Eris' notes? Investigating whatever's in front of you while I do that. The energy coming off it is incredible. Barring another source, it's probably what you came for…

Entering into the Core of Corruption, the Guardian claims the artifact known as the Barrow-Dyad. Instantaneously, they are suddenly torn between dimensions. Destroying three Taken Blights across the room, the Guardian returns to the material plane.

  • Sloane: The weapon isn't the source! Guardian, Taken right on top of you!

The Guardian is ambushed by hordes of Dire Taken led by the Hive Knight; Xir-Kurr, Not Taken, and the Taken Knight; Xir-Kurr, Taken. Over the course of a fierce battle, the Guardian slays Xir-Kurr, Not Taken. In response to the death of its other half, Xir-Kurr, Taken jumps onto the lower floor and becomes consumed by a Taken Blight

Xir-Kuur takes a new shape..

The Taken Blight dissipates as Xir-Kurr, Taken re-emerges larger in size.

  • Sloane: Get out of there, right now. The Hive magic in this room — part prison, part airlock. If you can get the door energized, you're in business.

Exiting the Core of Corruption, the Guardian stands on a Hive plate to begin a ritual to seal the gateway leading to the Anteroom.

Ritual of Expulsion begins!

The gateway of the Anteroom is sealed.
