Ikora Rey

The Sol Progeny are a triad of Vex Minds located in the Black Garden, which serve as the vessels for the Black Heart; each reflecting a different era of the Sol Collectives. They would be rebuilt as the Temporal Progeny, composed of new Axis Minds, in service to the Witness.

History[edit]

Origins[edit]

The Sol Progeny serve as the vessels for the Black Heart and are summoned if their god is threatened.[1] Each Axis Mind represents a different era of the Vex Collectives, the Primeval Mind represents the past, the Eschaton Mind represents the present, and the Imminent Mind represents the future.[citation needed]

Destruction of the Black Heart[edit]

The Guardian would enter the Black Garden to destroy the Black Heart so the Traveler could begin to heal. The Heart would summon the Progeny to defeat the Guardian. Despite the power that the Axis Minds were empowered with, they were defeated, and the Black Heart was destroyed.[2]

Prison of Elders[edit]

Despite the destruction of the Black Heart's vessels, this was not the end for the Sol Progeny. The Overmind Minotaurs would assist their master Qodron, Gate Lord in starting a riot in the Prison of Elders after seeing a future that can be achieved by killing a "Light".[3][4] The Guardian would arrive in the Prison of Elders, defeating the Overmind Minotaurs and their master and ending their riot.[5]

The Taken War[edit]

During the events of the Taken War, Guardians enter the Black Garden to destroy the Groundskeeper, which serves as the Progeny's protector. In response, the Descendants and Virgo Prohibition enter the Garden to assist it. However, despite its assistance, the Groundskeeper would be defeated by the Lightbearers.[6]

The Black Heart's Recreation[edit]

When Osiris contacted the Guardian about a disturbance coming from the Black Garden that was preventing The Crow from fulling crossing into the Pale Heart, the Guardian set off to the Black Garden to investigate the disturbance. Upon finding the source of the disturbance, The Guardian and Osiris would discover that the Sol Divisive had recreated the Black Heart under orders from the Witness. The newly recreated Black Heart would be defended by the Temporal Progeny, successors to the original Sol Progeny. Despite their best efforts, the triad Axis Minds along with Sol Divisive units sent for support would fail, and the Black Heart would be destroyed once again.[7]

Structure[edit]

Concept Art of Sol Progeny worshiping the Black Heart.

The Progeny are individually named Primeval Mind, Imminent Mind, and Eschaton Mind, and they each bear a different head shape. They each appear as a lifeless statue until the Black Heart summons them to protect itself.[2] Unlike Zydron, these units are built specifically as vessels for the Black Heart, as tendrils of darkness can clearly be seen emanating from their bodies.[1] The Sol Progeny were already stirring before Guardians invaded the garden,[8] as The Speaker believes they were intended to be used to summon the reality-altering powers of the Vault of Glass into the rest of the system.[9] The Temporal Progeny, comprised of the Established Mind, Inevitable Mind, and Synchronal Mind, would serve as the Sol Progeny's successors, this time used as the Witness's final attempt to keep the allied forces out of the Pale Heart.[7]

Trivia[edit]

  • The names of the three Sol Progeny – Primeval Mind, Imminent Mind, and Eschaton Mind - contain terms relating to past, present, and future respectively.
    • "Primeval" refers to the very beginning of time.
    • "Imminent" means something about to happen very soon.
    • "Eschaton" refers to the theological "end of days".
  • The names of the latter two Sol Progeny are likely a reference to the expression "immanentizing the eschaton".
  • Although the killcam label the three Minotaurs as "Sol Progeny" faction, they individually bear the appearance of Sol Divisive, Descendants, and Precursors.
  • A Vex also named Sol Progeny can be found in the Taken War version of some Nightfall Strikes.
  • In the room where players spawn inside the Black Garden, another large Minotaur statue similar to the ones animated by the Black Heart can be observed overgrown with moss and vines. Whether this statue is affected by the destruction of the Heart is unclear, as the pathway back to it during the "Undying Mind" strike is no longer traversable.
  • In the Curse of Osiris expansion for Destiny 2, statues of the Sol Progeny can be found in the simulations of The Infinite Forest. However, they feature a yellow texture rather than the grey and brown appearance of the original statues.
