Overview

"– Let your mind be split into the many facets of thought it so craves to embody –"
— The Witness to a Dissenter as it prepares to transform them into a swarm of Grim[1]

Initially speculated by the Ghost to be a conquered species that were subsequently reshaped into soldiers by the Witness,[2] the Grim were in fact created from dissenting minds within the Witness' collective. The Witness split one Dissenter's mind into countless fragments, using the Traveler's Light to create a swarm of flying creatures which each housed a small portion of their original consciousness, creating the first Grim. The shrieking attacks used by the Grim are echoes of the Dissenter's screams as it was being transformed.[1]

Grim usually live and fly together in colonies, as they are able to recall more of their origin the more Grim of a colony are together. However, Grim killed or mixed with other colonies results in pieces of these memories fading more and more until only instinct remains.[1]

Gameplay

Grim tend to be very loose with their positioning. Usually, when they spawn in, they're around the middle section of the deployment, but will quickly fly to where they're most effective. While having low damage by themselves, Grim make the most of their Transitory Lance attacks, using them rarely as a form of fatal damage. Instead, Grim fire tends to be used more as a pressure tool to prevent or prolong the regeneration process. If the Grim ever find themselves in close range, they will prepare and then let out a Screech, inflicting the foe with tinnitus for five seconds. Tinnitus slows the target, along with disabling a Guardian's double jump and impairing their vision. If a Grim feels it is out of position it will use its aerial dodge to quickly swoop to another location, usually back with its flock or above more Dread.

Grim can enter an enraged state when fighting alongside a Harbinger who enhances them. Enraged Grim are far more aggressive, noticeably faster, and use their Screech from a more generous distance, making the most of its moderate range. Enraged Grim can easily be spotted by their now red eye, pitch-black color pallet, and spikes along the back of their neck. Grim will not return to normal upon their Harbinger commander's defeat.
