Destiny: Rising is the name of an upcoming Destiny mobile game.[1]

Plot

Rising is set in an alternate timeline to the original Destiny series. According to NetEase, the game takes place during the time of the early City Age, during the era leading up to the foundation of the Last City.[2]

Gameplay

Contradictory reports exist as to the nature of Rising. It has been stated to be a third-person shooter, yet also mirrors the gameplay of prior Destiny games, which are first-person.The game is hero-focused, where players take control of characters from the history of Destiny, plus new ones. The game reportedly has missions, strikes and possibly even a raid.[1]

Development

Rising was codenamed "Viper" during development.[3] Work on Rising had begun by 2022 at the latest, based on a very old investment deal with Bungie.[1] Initially, Bungie was heavily involved with the project, but after negotiations fell through, Bungie scaled back its involvement. In/around 2024, Bungie's involvement with Rising was limited to narrative and support, offering visual assets such as character models and assets. Only around 5 Bungie staff were working on Rising in/around this year.[3] NetEase meanwhile focused on gameplay.[1]

The existence of Rising was first reported in 2022.[4] Job listings for a Destiny mobile game existed as far back as 2021.[5]

The game was officially revealed on October 14, 2024, revealing it to be a hybrid first-person and third-person mobile RPG shooter set in an alternate timeline to Destiny. A trailer and developer preview were released, along with a website and sign-ups opened for the first closed alpha test of the game on November 1st.[6]

Trivia

  • Comparisons have been made between Destiny Rising and Diablo Immortal, in that both are mobile spinoffs developed by NetEase.[1]
  • According to some reports, the game is "100% aimed at the Asian market;" an apparent reference to the game having microtransactions.[1]
