The Echo of Navigation in Kludge

"Heir-presumptive, I make you sharp so that you may continue my logic and uphold my law. You will take up my mantle and become me. You will remove everything that can be removed. And you will bring extinction to your enemies, as I brought extinction to mine."
— The Echo of Navigation speaking to the Guardian

The Echo of Navigation is one of several paracausal artifacts known as Echoes that were released from within the Traveler following the destruction of the Witness. It was created specifically from the memories of Oryx, the Taken King following his slaying of Akka, his communion with the Deep, and the creation of his Dreadnaught.[1]

Description[edit]

The Echo vaguely resembles a north star or compass rose, with eight blade-like points joined at the center.

Like the Echoes of Command and Riis, the Echo of Navigation was created when the Witness was destroyed, its darkness fused with the Traveler's light during the final events of Operation Ahamkara. However, this Echo was special as it contained the memories of Oryx, The Taken King, in his prime when Oryx just mantled himself as the Taken King by slaying Akka and using the Worm God's corpse to reshape his throne world into the Dreadnaught.[1]

History[edit]

Like the other Echoes, The Echo of Navigation would break away from the Traveler and drift far out into the solar system, where it would arrive in Saturn's orbit and crash into the derelict Dreadnaught and take up residence within its hull.

The Echo's power would draw the attention of The Dread, an army of reshaped beings created by the Witness to be its servants. With the death of their master, both they and the remaining Taken within the system became aimless and sought new power and purpose to guide them. Upon encountering the Echo of Navigation, the Dread would serve it as their leading commander, Keit'ehr, First of the Reshaped became taken and rechristened as The Resonant Knife, First of the Reshaped. The Echo of Navigation would also give rise to a new faction of Taken, the Dire Taken. After claiming a powerful army to its side, the Echo of Navigation would seize control over the Dreadnaught's systems, reactivating it after being dormant since Oryx's death.[2]

The Echo would use the Dreadnaught's weapon systems to launch Eversion Anchors all across the solar system. One would touch down in the European Dead Zone, prompting the Vanguard to send in the Guardian to investigate. Meanwhile, Eris Morn and the Drifter would launch their own investigation as they made their way towards the Dreadnaught to find out why the ship has suddenly come back to life. Unfortunately, this investigation would result in Eris's death at the hands of The Resonant Knife.[3][4]

On the Dreadnaught, while the Guardian was disabling the Eversion Anchors, the Echo of Navigation finally acknowledged the Guardian's presence and spoke. The Guardian is drawn to the Hall of Souls, where the Echo of Navigation reveals itself before them. At the same time, Savathûn and a Knight representing the Voice of Xivu Arath meet to reunite with their brother. The Echo asks Xivu Arath what has become of their war, to which the God of War responds by saying that Oryx had been slain and that his killer stands before him. This information catches the Echo off guard, as it had no idea that the real Oryx was dead. Xivu Arath states that Oryx shall rise again once the Guardian is killed. However, the Memory of Oryx dismisses the idea, stating that if he truly is destroyed, then he deserves extinction. Impressed by his killer's triumph, the Echo then asks the Guardian to step forward and claim their rightful place as Oryx's heir. Savathûn then tells both Xivu Arath and the Echo to stop acting like children. She tries to convince her siblings that without the Witness, they are finally free to create their own paths. However, Xivu Arath fails to listen to reason and leaves, vowing to avenge her brother and stating that she will not allow her sister to abandon them again. Savathûn leaves as well, as the Echo then summons a large attack force of Dire Taken led by The Resonant Knife to attack the Guardian, forcing them to retreat to their ship.[1]

After this encounter and a quick briefing from Sloane, the Guardian would return to the Dreadnaught to continue battling against the Taken and Dread. As they did so, the Echo of Navigation would watch and admire the Guardian as they defeated every challenge the Dreadnaught had to offer them, impressed by their strength and claiming that their destiny was to take up Oryx's mantle. Xivu Arath, meanwhile, would brief the Echo about events that happened in Oryx's life and events that happened after his death, including the death of the Witness and his quest for vengeance for the death of Crota. However, the Memory of Oryx would voice his disappointment on how his former self was driven here by sentimental revenge, thus defying his own logic. The Echo would also voice even greater disappointment to Xivu Arath for following the Witness and losing her edge by not accepting Oryx's logic, even saying that Xivu Arath's actions were heresy.[5]
