Vatoc was a Psion of the Red Legion. He had fled many times from the Guardians, Fallen, Hive and Vex from Mercury to the Reef. He felt no guilt for any of the times he fled as the Legion since, as a Psion, there wasn't any honor, promotions, or wealth to be gained in staying and fighting. Only survival. However, each time he managed to flee from a battle, the Legion would assign him to a different battle, knowing he was weak but lacking many strong Cabal troops.[1]
However, this changed after Empress Caiatl arrived in the system following the Legion's many failures. With it, Vatoc felt he had a choice of not just survival, but what to live for. During one battle on Nessus against the Vex, Vatoc hid behind a tower and recalled his past. When he saw areas on the battlefield where he could hide and survive, he instead reloaded his weapon and sang an oath to the Empress, now no longer a coward.[1]
