Deputy Commander Sloane is a Titan who served as a Vanguard Scout. During the Red War, Sloane served as Commander Zavala's deputy and secured the moon of Titan as an outpost for the Vanguard. In recent times, she has become bonded with Ahsa, a creature that opposes The Witness, but has also become partially Taken at the hands of Xivu Arath.

Biography[edit]

Early life and career[edit]

"The siege is broken. The stalemate we've had with the Eliksni for what, a hundred years? It's over. We won."
— Sloane, in a report to Commander Zavala

At some point after being resurrected by her Ghost Síocháin, Sloane arrived at the refugee camp below the Traveler. Alongside her fellow Guardians, including Lord Shaxx, Sloane helped construct massive walls to protect the growing settlement, which eventually became known as the Last City.[1] She was present when the Guardians first encountered and fought the Hive on Earth, after which she gained a hatred of them and became determined to wipe them out.[2] Sloane also fought in the Battle of Twilight Gap and helped fight back the Fallen's attempted assault on the Last City.[3]

Over the years, Sloane rose through the ranks of the Vanguard to become Deputy Commander of the Vanguard under Commander Zavala. During the Age of Triumph, she received reports that the Fallen Houses were abandoning their strongholds and disappearing in the aftermath of the SIVA Crisis. In response, Sloane oversaw a scouting mission to the Cosmodrome in Old Russia to confirm the reports. They found that most of the House of Devils and Kings had indeed abandoned not only the region but their House banners as well. Marcus Ren informed Sloane that he believed the Fallen's siege of the Last City had finally been broken. Sloane reported this information to Zavala, and informed him that she was coordinating with The Reef, Iron Lords, and the Warlocks to uncover more intelligence on the Fallen's new motives and movements.[4]

The Red War[edit]

Retreat to Titan[edit]

"We have a counter-offensive to plan. To do that, we need to get this station up and running. There's a fleet to prep, Guardians to arm, and a trove of intercepted Red Legion transmissions to decrypt. It's critical we gain access to the station's Control Center."
— Sloane, briefing the Young Wolf

When the Red Legion invaded the solar system and conquered the Last City, imprisoning the Traveler in a cage to strip the Guardians of their Light, Sloane evacuated Earth with hundreds of other Guardians and refugees under the leadership of Commander Zavala. Sloane reported to Zavala aboard one of their ships in order to begin planning their resistance to the Cabal invasion.[5] While leaving Earth, the fleet intercepted a encoded Cabal transmission, but were unable to decrypt it.[6] They settled upon Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, as their rally point. Sloane and Shipwright Amanda Holliday aided Zavala in crafting a message to send to the scattered Guardian forces throughout the system. She found the Commander's messages to be void of hope and made it sound like the war was already lost, but found herself unable to criticize Zavala beyond asking him to be more inspiring, although Amanda had no such issues and raised their concerns to him. Sloane backed up Amanda, pointing out that they were not using most of their fuel to reach Titan to simply hide and that Zavala's message needed to include a plan for the Guardians to rally behind. Zavala did not change the message, and ordered them to send it out as it was.[7]

Upon the fleet's arrival at Titan, the Vanguard and refugees landed at the New Pacific Arcology to set up base and plan their counterattack, however, they found that the Hive had established a stronghold there. Under Zavala's command, Sloane sent two teams to scout the Arcology to determine the extent of the Hive's infestation. Both teams were wiped out in the mission but reported back enough information to confirm nearly the entire Arcology was under Hive control. Sloane reported the situation to Zavala but believed even without the Light that the Guardians could storm the Arcology and wipe out the Hive, stating that if they needed they could burn down the entire place to drive them out. Her commander did not even turn to look at her, merely lamenting that he had been a fool to come to Titan and that their strength could not match the Hive. Increasingly concerned about Zavala's demeanour, Sloane told him he was not wrong and that Titan had all the resources and technology they needed to strike back at the Cabal if they could defeat the Hive, but Zavala cut her off and ordered all forces pulled back to the landing area they secured before dismissing her.[8]

Eventually, the Iron Lord known as the Young Wolf arrived, claiming to have regained their Light. Despite Zavala's worry, Sloane asked the Young Wolf to help them secure the facility and prepare their forces by capturing the control center in Siren's Watch. With their Light, the Young Wolf easily cut through the Hive and reached the control center. Sloane's hopes were raised by the Guardian's success, and she told Zavala that they would be able to start planning their offensive soon, but the Commander was unconvinced it would be so easy. Sloane directed the Young Wolf to clear out the Hive's breeding grounds, and they eliminated Ubara, Hive Prince to secure the area. Sloane and Zavala landed at the control center to greet the Guardian, and she gave them a grateful nod as she entered the control room to set up the Guardian's temporary headquarters.[6]

With a command center established, Sloane and the others turned their attention to restoring power to the station. She and Amanda informed the Young Wolf that they would guide them over the comms to the pistons that needed to be restarted. As they progressed, Sloane informed them that the Fallen on Titan had followed them from Earth, and noted that they needed to get Amanda flying again so she could provide support on these missions. When the pilot reminded her that her Hawk had been heavily damaged, Sloane informed her she would have it moved to the top of the repair queue. When the Guardian reached the pistons, they learned some of them had been encased in Hive chitin, which Sloane directed to be destroyed so the pistons could function properly. When all the pistons were clear but power still did not return, Sloane suggested the Young Wolf make their way to the central power platform and flip the central circuit breaker, hoping that would be sufficient to restore power. Her solution worked, and while the others celebrated having power, Sloane told her team they had done good work but they still needed to decode the intercepted transmissions.[9]

Sloane attempts to caution Zavala's plans to assault The Almighty.

When the Guardian returned to the command center in Siren's Watch, Sloane took a brief moment to admire the view and thanked them for helping get the command center powered. She then revealed that she was ready to begin plotting the Vanguard's counterattack against the Red Legion and needed their help to do it. The first step was to decode the transmissions they had intercepted using an advanced CPU that Amanda had detected deeper into the Arcology complex. Sloane warned the Young Wolf that they had no intel on the Hive presence within and was worried that they could be summoning anything in their warrens. Despite the heavy Hive presence, the Young Wolf succeeded in their mission and Sloane used the CPU to decrypt the transmissions. To her horror, she learned the Red Legion had positioned a superweapon known as The Almighty in orbit of the sun and would use it to destroy the entire solar system once they had what they wanted, and that they had done so to hundreds of other systems they conquered. Sloane briefed Zavala and the Young Wolf on the situation, and defeatedly noted that the war was already essentially lost. Zavala refused to believe that and decided that they would launch an all-out assault on The Almighty and questioned when the fleet would be ready to attack. Sloane tried to caution him, but he cut her off, noting that if they waited, they would all die and that their only hope was to fight and reclaim the Last City and their Light, ending with a declaration that he needed the rest of his fireteam, Cayde-6 and Ikora Rey.[10]

Retaking Earth[edit]

"Sorry I couldn't be there when you finally took the fight to Ghaul. We did our share of damage in the streets, though. I've never been so happy to get some new dents in my armor. Looks like you've got some new ones too. Turning the tide of a war will do that."
— Sloane to the Young Wolf after the liberation of the Last City

After Cayde and Ikora joined Zavala, the Young Wolf, and the rest of the resistance at The Farm on Earth, Sloane continued to provide tactical support and plan operations from her outpost on Titan. She contacted the Young Wolf upon learning that the Red Legion was moving high-yield explosives in the Sunken Isles near Firebase Hades in the European Dead Zone. Sloane directed for them to be destroyed, although Suraya Hawthorne protested that they could be used against the Cabal. An intercepted manifest pointed to the location of the remaining explosives within the firebase, and Sloane wanted them transmatted away. Hawthorne suggested using transmat juice to detonate them, which Sloane incredulously repeated, but Hawthorne shot back that she probably did not know how transmats worked either. Realizing that she did not, Sloane quickly declared that the topic was not relevant and ordered the Young Wolf into the base, where they placed transmat beacons on three explosive devices. Sloane detected several heavy tanks offline near the Young Wolf's position and ordered them to leave before they were activated, but Hawthorne interrupted and told them to go outside to the tanks. Sloane was skeptical of what she was planning, but her skepticism turned to admiration when Hawthorne told them to retransmat the explosives to the tanks. She had the Young Wolf guard the explosives from a Cabal counterattack while their Ghost prepared them for detonation and told Hawthorne that this was a good plan. Once the explosives were detonated and the tanks destroyed, Sloane requested the Young Wolf withdraw before more Cabal arrived. After they escaped the base, Sloane congratulated everyone on their successful mission and declared she would track down the explosives that had been sent away, while Hawthorne noted they made a good team and should work together again in the future.[11]

When the final assault began on the Last City to reclaim it from the Red Legion, Sloane returned to Earth and fought in the streets of the occupied City. She eagerly took the battle to the invaders and received new damage to her armor, but survived the battle long enough for the Young Wolf to defeat Dominus Ghaul and for the Traveler to awaken and destroy the cage trapping the Light, restoring its gifts to Sloane and the other Guardians. In the aftermath of the battle, Sloane was ordered by Zavala to return to Titan and secure the moon and Saturn against any threats that presented themselves in the region. When the Young Wolf stopped by Titan, Sloane apologized for not assisting them in person during the reclamation of the Last City. She noted that it would be wise for the Red Legion to retreat now that they had suffered so many defeats and declared that if they were too stubborn to do so the Guardians would continue pushing them back.[12]

Securing Titan[edit]

Race against the Fallen[edit]

When Commander Zavala and Sloane fled to Titan to establish a secret base against the Red Legion, the Fallen saw an opportunity to follow them there like Vultures as Sloane describes them. The Fallen quickly got to work after finding long-abandoned Golden Age cities such as the New Pacific Arcology ripe for plunder and intercepted many unmanned shipments sent to Earth by Sloane.[13]

Later a group of Fallen led by Mithrax competed against the Guardians sent by Sloane to gain access to an ancient methane reactor, with the motivation of boosting Ether production for Servitors by doubling or tripling the output.[14]

Mithrax would always be one step ahead of the Guardians by constructing various barriers along the way to halt the Guardians progress. Finally, Mithrax is seen dueling against Golthor, the Subtle in which Guardians are given a choice in who to kill. By killing the Hive Knight and sparing Mithrax will trigger an ending in which he'll thank the Guardians with an Eliksni display of respect to the surprise of Sloane and Zavala. He disappears and grants the player access to the reactor, putting questions to a Fallen and Human alliance.

Savathûn's Song[edit]

After the Vanguard discovered evidence of a Hive ritual being conducted in the warrens beneath the New Pacific Arcology, Sloane prepared a team of nine Guardians to enter the warrens and disrupt the ritual. She briefed one of the fireteams, which was led by the Praxic Warlock Taeko-3, and found herself frustrated by their cockiness and underestimation of the Hive. After Taeko claimed that the three of them were unstoppable, she questioned what would happen if Taeko found herself alone without backup against the Hive. The Exo merely smirked and claimed she would embrace the Praxic Fire.[2]

This proved to be foolhardy as her fireteam quickly became trapped by the Hive within the Archeology and hunted down, killed, and converted into crystals full of Void Light for use in a summoning ritual. Taeko as the lone survivor watched as her best friends were desecrated by the Hive and made contact with the rescue team sent by Commander Zavala and Sloane. She soon discovered a huge Shrieker known as Savathûn's Song was responsible for the horrors the Hive were committing and dissuaded the rescue team from coming any further. Taeko's sacrifice was not in vain, as the strike team was able to destroy the monstrous Shrieker and prevent whatever ritual the Hive was preparing for from occurring.[15]

"Zavala wasn't thrilled about you running off after Cayde's killers. Can't say I blame him… Just tell me you got 'em. What? Even I know duty and obligation don't always line up."
— Sloane, to the Young Wolf following Cayde's death

Several months after the conclusion of the Red War, Sloane remained on Titan as the commander of the Vanguard's New Pacific Arcology outpost. She received word of Cayde-6's death in the Reef at the hands of Uldren Sov and the Scorn Barons while attempting to stop a riot in the Prison of Elders, and that the Young Wolf had defied Zavala to seek revenge on the murderers. The next time they visited Titan, Sloane stated that she understood why the Commander was upset but wanted to know if Cayde had been avenged. Noting the Young Wolf's surprise, Sloane revealed that she understood that duty could not always be put before their obligations to their friends and that she admired the Young Wolf for seeking justice. She told them that she supported them and wished them luck in keeping up their good work.[16]

The Arrival[edit]

The Pyramid above Titan's methane ocean.

"When it all started, me, Zavala, Shaxx… we didn't build the wall; we were the wall. I told Zavala once: I was there for the beginning, and I'll be there for the end. It's not the end yet."
— Sloane, deciding to stay on Titan and fight the Darkness

Shortly after routine shipment of Golden Age technology back to the Last City from the Arcology, a Fallen Ketch arrived at Siren's Watch to let off a landing party of Dregs to steal from Sloane's work crews. Sloane intervened and the attackers were repelled, but contrary to her expectations, the Fallen had been after supplies rather than the Golden Age technology that took off not long before, leading her to the conclusion that the Fallen were leaving the Arcology. It wouldn't take long to find out why, as she looked up into the sky and saw a Pyramid hovering inside Titan's atmosphere.[17]

Sloane was visited by the Young Wolf under orders of Zavala to determine what her plans were for combating the threat. She was pleased to see her old friend and noted that while Zavala was focused on the Pyramids she was concerned about what the Hive were up to. Sloane informed the Young Wolf that the Hive was taking advantage of the Pyramids arrival distracting the Vanguard to dig deeper into the Golden Age secrets of the Arcology. She declared that she would not allow them to pick the bones of humanity before they were even dead and issued orders to the Young Wolf to disrupt the Hive's operations. When they reported back after disrupting the Hive operations, Sloane thanked them and stated she would put together a plan to deal with them and the Pyramid. She then fell silent as she looked over the methane seas of Titan, now darkened by the Pyramid, and exchanged nods of respect with the Young Wolf as they departed.[18]

Due to the Pyramids presence, many of Sloane's work crews were evacuated from Titan, leaving the platforms to the mercy of the methane ocean's waves and Sloane in a foul mood due to the constant shaking. She contacted Amanda in the hopes her friend could guide her through constructing something to stabilize the platform and allow her to focus on overseeing operations. However, most of Amanda's suggestions were beyond Sloane's capability, and she had no time to search the Arcologies to locate an Engram that might contain a useful wavebreaking structure. After hearing the last of Amanda's ideas and watching her spill her ramen attempting to mime them, Sloane gave her a cheery wave as she signed off. However, she stayed in alone in her darkened office for some time afterwards, reflecting on the situation.[19]

Zavala soon ordered a full evacuation of Titan and other locations throughout the solar system which had been occupied by the Pyramids. Sloane oversaw the evacuation of all personnel and supplies from the moon but remained concerned about the Hive's activity. She learned that Pryn-rid, Treasurer of Savathûn was leading a team of Hive in locating specific pieces of Golden Age tech, but did not interfere to let them find it and then take it from them. When the Young Wolf returned, Sloane informed them that she had learned of an important Hive ritual being conducted in the Arcology ruins and of her plan to seize the tech from Pryn-rid. A report had recently arrived confirming the Hive had recovered the tech and Sloane ordered the Young Wolf to recover it. When her friend returned with the tech, Sloane revealed that she had been researching it and learned it was a suit of survival gear and claimed it for her own. She told them that she intended to remain on Titan and face whatever emerged from the Pyramids head-on, with her resolute determination halting the Young Wolf from protesting. Sloane softly recalled how she and her fellow Titans like Zavala and Shaxx were once the walls keeping the Last City safe and resolved to be the wall on Titan. Giving a small smile to the Guardian, she stated that she had told Zavala that she would be there for the end and that she was determined to ensure that this would not be the end yet. She was confident that Zavala, of all people, would understand her decision to stay and fight.[18]

After watching the Young Wolf depart Titan for the final time, Sloane entered her office and put on the recovered suit of power armor. Upon putting on the helmet she realized the controls were not in a language she knew but guessed the correct option to select to activate the armor. As it conformed to her size, Sloane tested her movement and tried to summon Arc energy, but the suit blocked it. She decided she would need to learn how to utilize her Light through the suit and adjusted more settings before moving outside, finding that each step and move she made synched the suit more to her and made it easier to control. As a massive storm hit Siren's Watch, a Thrall charged her, but Sloane easily grabbed it by the head and ripped it apart with the enhanced strength of the armor. Her laugh was broadcast by the suit as a battle cry that echoed throughout the abandoned platform and up the overhead Pyramid as the storm raged around her.[20]

Following the disappearance of Titan, both Sloane and Asher Mir were declared MIA by the Vanguard.

Missing in action[edit]

"Don't worry. We've survived many horrors. We'll survive this one, too."
— Zavala's hallucination of Sloane

Following the reformation of the Traveler, Zavala began to daydream of those lost on the disappeared planets, Sloane included, while preparing a speech to the people of the City. He imagined requesting that she lead the Vanguard's efforts to combat the House of Salvation on Europa while she was visiting his office, which she accepted.[21] Half a year later during the Endless Night, Sloane's uninhabited apartment in the City was slated to be emptied by the building's landlord who hoped to capitalize on people moving away from the newly-established Eliksni Quarter. Offended by the disrespect to her memory, one of the moving workers, Sonja, stole the Crown-Splitter Sloane kept in her home armory with the intent to give it to an active Guardian.[22]

Cut off from the rest of the solar system following Titan's disappearance, Sloane had fallen into the methane ocean, but survived thanks to her scavenged suit of Golden Age power armor. As she sank into the depths, she experienced visions of the past and future, seemingly originating from an entity that wished to make contact.[23] She subsequently awoke on the seabed, and began pursuing the Titan Pyramid as it moved around the moon, making her way through the ruins of the Arcology as she did so. In her travels, she and her Ghost discovered temporal rifts similar to those left by the Witness on Mars, which provided glimpses into the past of Titan. In one of these rifts, Sloane saw a Golden Age marine biologist, Gideon Tepin, who was pacing around while talking about telepathic messages he had received from a creature out in the ocean. Síocháin accessed archival data from the Arcology and determined that the creature was a "psychic space whale" the researchers had termed "TLev-01", which was not native to Titan.[23]

Sloane continued pursuing the Pyramid, but was always too late to catch it during its stops, only being able to find traces of its activities at each of the places it came to rest. At one of these sites, she found a cave contaminated with Taken residue which contained a Hive sigil. After fighting off a group of Taken, she noticed that she could perceive the thoughts of the Taken through the sigil, and also began to hear a voice in her head prodding her to interact with it. She reached out and touched the sigil, causing her to become enveloped in Taken corruption, and heard the voice of Xivu Arath, the Hive God of War, in her mind, saying that the War God had accepted her challenge.[23]

Sloane's Light held back the Taken corruption, but over the course of the following year her condition steadily worsened. Nonetheless, she continued her mission, pursuing the Pyramid and fighting any Hive and Taken that got in her way. Eventually, however, she ran afoul of Xivu Arath's forces, who surrounded her as Sloane was overcome with a psychic assault from the God of War. Acting through a Taken Knight whose sword anchored the Black Terrace to the physical world, Xivu Arath peeled Sloane's power armor from her flesh and bones, trying to get Síocháin to appear so that she could destroy the Ghost and sever Sloane's connection to the Light. At the last moment, however, she was rescued by a massive serpentine creature, the same one that had been telepathically communicating with her since she had fallen into the ocean.[23]

Sloane let the creature lead her to safety, and learned that her name was Ahsa. With her condition, Sloane was only able to partially communicate with Ahsa, but was able to identify her as an old enemy of The Witness, the true enemy of the Traveler and cause of the Collapse, and she had important intelligence to share regarding The Witness.[24]

Distress Signal[edit]

"You don't understand. That distress call wasn't for me. It was for her."
— Sloane
Sloane introducing Ahsa.

Realizing she didn't have the means or the manpower to strengthen her connection to Ahsa, Sloane rigs together a distress signal aimed towards the Vanguard on Earth to get the aid she and Ahsa need. The Vanguard Coalition managed to receive her signal following the Guardians combating the Cabal Shadow Legion on Neptune and Earth, and Soteria revealing to them a lead to follow the Witness into the portal lies on Titan. Zavala, exhilarated at the thought of his friend possibly still being alive, assembles a team involving himself, the Guardian, Saint-14 and Lord Saladin to find her. After arriving and combating Hive and Taken serving Xivu Arath, the Guardian and Zavala found her one kilometer down in the methane seas. The Drifter was also present after hearing of Titan's return and provided aid in helping the Guardian reach Sloane's position. The group are shocked to see her condition but more so at first meeting Ahsa. Sloane brought them all up to speed that Ahsa could provide invaluable information regarding The Witness, which convinced Zavala to approve of the operation, with Drifter providing his technical knowledge to process the egregore coral to strengthen her physic connection to Ahsa, thereby allowing her to interpret her messages.

As the Guardians worked towards gathering what was needed, Sloane was also brought up to speed on what had transpired while she was away, including how Lord Saladin now serves as a Valus in the Cabal Empire of Empress Caiatl, something she was partially angry with, having not forgotten how the Red Legion under Dominus Ghaul had ransacked the Tower. Lord Saladin however, clarified that things have changed and if he can find a way to trust Ahsa like she asked him, then she can find a way to work with Empress Caiatl. Zavala would later return her old sword Crown-Splitter to Sloane, which brought a smile to the Deputy Commander. Another old friend of hers, Aisha, would arrive in person and tragically inform her that Reed-7 was killed during The Witness's assault over Earth, which rattled Sloane but ultimately reminded her that she is still human.

After gathering the salvage of Titan that Drifter needed, the Guardians worked with Sloane in finding the first sample of egregore coral, 5000 meters down in the methane seas. They found it was protected by a Servitor, corrupted by the Wrathborn, J4W-S, Wrath-Hunter Servitor. Sloane used herself as bait to lure the corrupted Servitor away from the reef long enough for the Guardians to reach the area, but would be plagued by the voice of Xivu Arath once more. Despite this, the Guardians managed to destroy the Servitor and acquire the coral. With the sample in hand, Sloane was able to strengthen her connection to Ahsa as hoped, allowing her to interpret the first message which spoke of an "oasis in the desert" and "travelers whose journey had come to an end, "the first victims of the Witness". Though the experience left Sloane shaken, having felt Xivu Arath's thirst for battle, the Witness's cold rage and even the Taken's enmity, Sloane remained committed to the mission, determined to see Ahsa's messages delivered.

Zavala ultimately had to come clean with how much things had changed while Sloane was MIA. From Guardians wielding powers tied to the Darkness like Stasis and Strand, to the formation of an alliance against the Witness between the Vanguard, Empress Caiatl's Cabal Empire, Mithrax's House of Light, and the Awoken, Savathûn using the body of Osiris to infiltrate the Last City, her Lucent Brood being granted the Light, the Witness attacking the Traveler, the discovery of a city on Neptune, and most tragically, Amanda Holliday's death, Sloane was strongly shocked. The news of Amanda's death hit Sloane the hardest, as they were close, but Zavala could tell from the look in her eyes that she nonetheless buried that pain. Disregarding the news, Sloane soldiered on with the mission, with Saint-14 providing tactical support as the Guardians dived into the seas once more to collect egregore coral. During the mission, Saint-14 tried to initiate a conversation with Sloane, trying to get her to open up about her experiences, but the Deputy Commander was not responsive. Instead she wanted to focus on the mission, something which Saint wholeheartedly agreed with. Despite Xivu Arath's continued demands and taunts, Sloane persisted in her role as bait, allowing the Guardians to reach the sea floor, take out Kudazad, Binder of Savathûn and collect further coral samples. With it, Sloane interprets the second message which involved a "city of light" and a "silent god withholding a deeper truth", but the interpretation takes a toll on her.

Weeks continued to pass, with Sloane and Ahsa recovering between each attempted communication, growing their bond, allowing further information to pass through Sloane to the Vanguard. With enough practice, Ahsa was able to bond completely with Sloane, if only for a moment. Using Sloane, Ahsa relayed the tale of the origins of the Witness.

Soon afterwards, Ahsa's safety became compromised, as Xivu Arath had managed to lure her out and corner her in a ritual to Take her. Sloane, alongside other members of the Coalition, set up a diversion to hold the attention of the Hive away from Ahsa, allowing the Guardian to slip through and free her from becoming Taken. Once safe from Xivu Arath's forces back at the Arcology, Sloane attempted one more joining with Ahsa, but was instead possessed by Xivu Arath. Struggling against the possession, Sloane was forced to speak propaganda in favor of Xivu Arath, as the Hive god attempted to convince her to let go and give in to warmongering in her name. Fueled by the rhetoric, Sloane raised the edge of her Crown Splitter to Zavala's throat, but was talked back from the brink by the words of her mentor. Dispelling Xivu Arath's hold, Ahsa took her place, and through Sloane was able to advise the Vanguard that there was only one being who could possibly assist them with chasing after the Witness; Savathûn. Sloane had completed her mission.

The Witness Defeated[edit]

During the first Solstice after the defeat of the Witness, Sloane met with Zavala in Rehnpeir's ramen shop. Zavala asked where Síocháin was, and she told him she was catching up with Glint. Sloane places her order without looking at the menu she had re-memorized while Zavala struggled to find his usual. While sipping tea, Sloane questioned if Zavala was alright, but he evaded her question. She then asked if using Stasis was an adjustment for him, and he shared that his opinions on the Darkness have been changing. Sloane shared her trust that he could handle the change, as their bowls arrived. She asked how the rest of the Vanguard was, and Zavala told her that they never expected to make it this far, and now they are adapting to a new way of living. Sloane reassured him that things will get better, and they are both going through the changes together.[25]

Personality and traits[edit]

Deputy Commander Sloane

Much like Zavala, Sloane is regarded as a stern Titan commander. Zavala thought of her as not only a friend, but a strong tactician and right-hand as his Deputy-Commander.[5] However, she was more morally flexible than her friend and supported the Young Wolf's campaign against the Scorn to avenge Cayde-6's murder, believing that duty should not always come first in a Guardian's life, especially after losing a comrade.[16]

Sloane has shown to care about the Guardians under her command as after the Fireteams she sent into the New Pacific Arcology never returned, she tasked the Guardian to find them but makes it clear in her orders to them to also make it back alive.

The Deputy-Commander has also shown to be very brave when facing against the arrival of the Black Fleet. She was confident that the Pyramids are not the end for the consumed planets, Sloane refuses to evacuate and instead gears up to face them head-on.

Following Titan's disappearance and being missing along with it, then reappearing nearly three years later, Sloane, though appearing shaken by her experience with being afflicted by Taken energies, the Deputy Commander has largely remained unchanged, showcasing her strength of will and fortitude in the face of such adversity. However, she was particularly surprised on how much time really passed while she was away and more so on how much had actually changed. Notably, Sloane almost appeared to take offense in Lord Saladin now serving as a Valus for the Cabal Empire but after a conversation with the Iron Lord, she agreed to give this change a chance.

Quotes[edit]

Cayde's Death Quote

  • Zavala wasn't thrilled about you running off after Cayde's killers. Can't say I blame him… Just tell me you got 'em. What? Even I know duty and obligation don't always line up. That's why I like you, Guardian. You don't just deal in justice, you embody it. Keep up the good fight. I'm rooting for you.

Story Mission: Utopia Quotes

  • Ahh. It's a hell of a view, isn't it? We're up and running thanks to you. There's plenty more to do around here, though. Chief among them — finally breaking ground on a counteroffensive against the Red Legion. I have a plan, but it won't work without you. We intercepted a priority one Red Legion signal during the City evacuation, but we can't crack the encryption. Holliday says there's tech that can do the job in the Arcology, which is effectively hostile territory. You'd be going in blind. The place has been dark for centuries. All we know for sure is the Hive is raising hell down there, perhaps literally. But if you're in… Let's put the plan into action.
  • They call it… "The Almighty." The crown jewel of the Red Legion and life's work of their leader… Dominus Ghaul. Ghaul has subjugated hundreds of worlds. Those that resisted… no longer exist. You see, The Almighty… annihilates stars. Nothing- and no one- survives Ghaul's ambition. What he wants… is the Traveler. And its Light. As for The Almighty… it's now pointed at our sun. In short, sir… the war's over. And we've lost.
  • Zavala, wait-

Story Mission: Riptide Quotes

  • All right, we're not out of this yet. Now that we've reached the Control Center, we still need to power up this place before we can take care of our Fleet. Commander Zavala tells me you've volunteered. I'll run tactical. Shipwright Holliday here will provide tech support. It's a straightforward op: get in, flip a switch, get out.
  • No. Those vultures have been following us since we evacuated Earth.
  • Holliday, we gotta get you back in the air. We'll need ongoing aerial threat assessments to keep our perimeter secure.
  • I'll bump you to the front of the line for repairs once the lights are back on.
  • Then let's find a fix.
  • Sounds like you got more scrubbing to do, Guardian.
  • Try the Central Platform. Everything routes through there.
  • Circuit breaker's going to be around there somewhere. Find it and flip the switch. Just like I said.
  • Exemplary work, everyone. But we still have to deal with these intercepted enemy transmissions.

  • Commander, if I may. Guardian, this is Deputy Commander Sloane. We have a counter-offensive to plan. To do that, we need to get this station up and running. There's a fleet to prep, Guardians to arm, and a trove of intercepted Red Legion transmissions to decrypt. It's critical we gain access to the station's Control Center. That's where you come in. If the Light really is with you, send the Hive back to hell.
  • Copy that. Keep pushing forward. Commander. At this rate, we can start planning our counteroffensive. We'll be outside the City gates in no time.
  • Clear the area so we can move in.
  • Perfect. Recon the perimeter before you move on the Control Center.
  • Well done. Sweep the perimeter, and we'll move in on your signal.
  • Copy that. Zavala and I are inbound. We're approaching the landing platform. Get up here, and take a bow.

Adventure: Thief of Thieves Quotes

  • They hit us and ran. We lost tools, gear… My crews can't work without that stuff.
  • My crews will be reinforcing this Rig again in no time.
  • Give those thieves a taste of their own medicine.
  • Good job. I'll set up a transmat. Wait… Wait a minute. Where's my beacon?
  • You've cleaned them out. These components are critical to the Rig's structural integrity. And thanks to you, we've got the tools to put them back.

Adventure: Bad Neighbors Quotes

  • My crew says we've got two problems. Wizards on a tower roof, doing who knows what, and the Fallen they've spooked.
  • Fallen first. They're using fuel cells to build an explosive countermeasure to the Hive. Sloppy stuff. It'll blow us all sky high.
  • Good. Sending you coordinates to the Hive.
  • What should work?
  • Up. You're looking for the top of a tower, the central platform.
  • Eliminate the Wizards, destroy their project, and stabilize this Rig.
  • How bad's the damage?
  • (Sigh) I'll take your word for it.

Adventure: Siren Song Quotes

  • Guardian, we're reading some odd fluctuations in our scans.
  • I've got three locations where the waves are strongest. Sending you coordinates.
  • What are you picking up?
  • Get over there, and we should be able to track those gravity waves back to their source.
  • Oh, I hear it. Amanda's grabbed your data and is mapping the source now.
  • Then let's do the same to them.
  • The sooner the better. We're hearing that sound on all sensors now. Feeling it, too.
  • I feel… sick.
  • Neutralize it!
  • We're stable again. Whatever you did, it worked. My… stomach thanks you.
  • I'm sure I'm going to hear all about what Amanda will use that for. What were the Hive doing with it?

Adventure: Deathless Quotes

  • Good, it's you. I'm getting reports from Holliday's crews about a Knight with a strange aura around it. It's playing merry hell with our schedule.
  • Sure. But this rig isn't winning any races. That Knight is in my way. Take it out.
  • New Hive spells. Just what we need. Get after it you two.
  • I'm not in the mood for this. Keep after him. Their spell can't keep that thing safe forever.
  • I've been fighting Hive for — well — longer than I want to admit. This is some kind of ritual.
  • Maybe. What's their goal, though? Why let this thing die over and over again?
  • If this is a ritual, then all of this is leading somewhere. I want the two of you there at the end, whatever that looks like.
  • Good work, both of you. You know, Holliday and I were just talking about how different we are from the Hive.
  • Oh, no. Amanda goes rogue and we'll have Thrall buzzing the control center inside a week. Ahem. But, uh, let's get back to work.

Adventure: No Safe Distance Quotes

  • Good, someone I can count on. The Cabal are moving high-yield explosives through that base. You need to neutralize them before they're used against us.
  • "Transmat juice?"
  • That's not relevant. Get into that base, and find those explosives.
  • There are heavy tanks near your position. Get out of there before they come online.
  • The tanks are outside.
  • Hawthorne, that is some good improvisation.
  • Hold that position. Those tanks are too important a target to leave standing.
  • No argument here.
  • A well-timed tactical withdrawal is probably wise.
  • We'll try to track down the explosives that got away. In the meantime, great work. Those tanks would have been a lot to handle.

Quest: Enemy of my Enemy Quotes

  • You know, I've fought on every battlefield in the system. Mars, Venus, the Hive Dreadnaught. You name it, I've been there. I've never held a front so determined to fall - literally into the ocean. We've tracked a crew of Fallen to an auxiliary control center. They hit the wrong switch in there, and we'll have water over our boots by morning. Go remind them who owns this rig. Dismissed.
  • Affirmative. Reports say we're dealing with one Captain and his crew. This should be routine, for someone like you.
  • Well said, sir. Come on by when you can, Guardian. We'll get a look at what you got.
  • Welcome back. I had Holliday look at the data you pulled. She says somewhere on this tub is a methane reactor, untouched since the Golden Age. The wave generators you restored cover our critical functions. But the more systems we bring online, the more power we need. If you can find that reactor, we'll finally be in the green. And maybe, just maybe, we can get a little rest.
  • We need you to get in there and cycle the power. That should clear up the noise and restore the core systems as well.
  • Did I say the reactor was safe?
  • Because I trust you to survive, Commander. All right. With those terminals refreshed, we've pinpointed the reactor's bootup console. Light 'em up.
  • I can see the reactor on heat scans, bright and clear. Well done, Guardian. Now all we have to do is get to it before the Fallen do. Should be easy. Right?
  • Thanks to you, the reactor is online and we know just where it is. Dropping coordinates now.
  • For Ether production, probably. They hook up a big Servitor to it, they double or triple output. Why do you ask?
  • Is it a methane reactor?
  • I look forward to your arrival
  • You… killed a Captain and found a methane reactor?
  • Guardian, thanks to you our power shortages are just a bad memory. Between the wave generators and this reactor, we're seeing systems light up we didn't even know existed. You brought a little bit of the Golden Age back to life today. And hell - who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Gameplay[edit]

Sloane serves as the Overseer of Titan and its main questgiver. She is situated in Siren's Watch. Turning in Arcology tokens, Alkane Dust and Alkane Spores increases player reputation with Sloane and rewards legendary faction gear, shaders and other rewards. The weapons in her inventory are mostly from Suros.

Trivia[edit]

  • Sloane is voiced by Cissy Jones.
  • Sloane's left pauldron bears several seals reminiscent of Warhammer 40000 Purity Seals given to noteworthy Space Marines who have proven themselves faithful and untainted by Chaos.
  • Sloane is seen on Titan with her face and arms exposed; given that Titan has apparently not been terraformed by the Traveler, and that methane becomes liquid at -161.49°C (-258.68°F), it is unknown how she can survive without protective equipment.
  • According to its reissued lore tab, Sloane was the original owner of Crown-Splitter.
