The Theodicy War was a conflict waged between two factions of the Awoken within the Distributary. The rural Eccaleists, led by the Diasyrm, accused Queen Alis Li of deicide by denying them the chance at godhood when she was allegedly the first to awake within the Distributary and determined what form the Awoken would take. The city-dwelling Sanguine supported Queen Li against these accusations. A peace was eventually negotiated between the two sides by Mara, Uldren, and Osana Sov.

Centuries later, Mara confided in Alis Li that she had engineered the Theodicy War to create a sense of guilt among the Awoken for the charmed lives they lead within the Distributary. She intended to answer that dissatisfaction with her plan to leave and fight in the cosmic war between Light and Darkness.
