House Bray[1] is a distinguished human family that lived at the height of the Golden Age. The family's progenitor is Clovis Bray I, founder of the Mars-based corporation of the same name[2]. Clovis had at least one child, a son Clovis Bray II.[2] Other members of House Bray led similarly illustrious and influential lives.

MembersEdit

Clovis Bray IEdit

Founder and head of the Clovis Bray Corporation,[2] former husband of Lusia and father of Clovis II. While an engineering and scientific genius, he lacked compassion or basic moral standards which often led him to disregard the safety and wellbeing of everyone around in the name of his research. By the end of his life he became obsessed with the idea of immortality and invested in the Exo program as the means of defying death. Notably, he sought counsel from the Darkness via the K1 artifact and that allowed him to polish his invention.[3]

After years of research and many casualties said research cost, he transitioned into an Exo himself and created an AI out of his final brainscan. Clovis-1, however, refused to comply with the AI's commands and take up his previous self's mantle, eventually requesting a memory wipe and starting a new life under a changed name as Banshee-44.[4] The AI was shut down by Banshee and Clovis' granddaughter Elsie, and accidentally reactivated centuries later by Guardians exploring the Deep Stone Crypt.

Lusia LinEdit

Former wife of Clovis I and mother of Clovis II. She was dizzyingly beautiful even at an old age, and incredibly savvy. After her son's death, she switched back to her maiden name and relocated to Suriname nature preserve to keep both it and herself safe from Clovis' disastrous influence. She despised her ex-husband for his practices, believing he had used their son's transition into an Exo as a "test run" for their granddaughter Elsie, and Elsie being a test run for Clovis himself.[5] She kept contacts with her grandchildren, Elsie recalling the rhubarb compote she used to make them[6] and going out of her way to reconnect with her after becoming an Exo.[5]

Clovis Bray IIEdit

Son of Clovis Bray I[2] and his only known child. When still a fetus, his genes were altered by his father in order to make him a "flawless image" of Clovis I himself, and that included replacing his mitochondrial DNA normally inherited from the mother with that of the father. Clovis II worked in his father's company along with the majority of his family. He married Sylvie Bray and had Alton, Willa and Elsie with her. At one point, he engaged in an extramarital affair that resulted in the birth of Anastasia; Sylvie decided to raise the child as her own, but terrified the destructive behaviour she exhibited at a young age had been inherited from Clovis, kept her in the dark about her true lineage.

Clovis II was being genetically "advanced" by his father throughout his life, one such attempt intending to allow him to no longer require sleep. This triggered a disease identified as fatal prion insomnia or the "Clovis Curse"; Clovis I attempted to save his son via transferring his consciousness into an Exo body, but the Dissociative Exomind Rejection he suffered caused him to rip his own chassis apart.[7]

Sylvie BrayEdit

Wife of Clovis II and biological mother of Alton, Willa and Elsie. Clovis I despised Sylvie, calling her a stain on the family, accussing of turning Clovis II against him and blatantly blaming her for his death. The sentiment was mutual, with Sylvie stating Clovis I killed everything he touched.[8] When Anastasia was born from Clovis' extramarital affair, Sylvie took her in as her own, but the girl's destructive tendencies haunted her. Sylvie decided to keep the truth of Ana's lineage from her, afraid she would grow up to be just like her grandfather if she knew she was related to him. The woman did not take Elisabeth's transition into an Exo body well, screaming and crying in horror on their first encounter.

She is known to have spoken both French and English, and hinted at possibly being Muslim.[8]

Alton BrayEdit

Only son of Clovis II and Sylvie. Unlike his sisters, he was not a scientist and instead served in a strictly executive role in the Clovis Bray corporation - among other things, he was the company's liaison with the K1 project on Luna. His grandfather Clovis I was unimpressed by him, calling him useless and not even mentioning him to Elsie when telling her--amnesiac after having been turned into an Exo--about the family.[9] Clovis I stated Alton had never opposed to the idea of transferring his father into an Exo body in order to treat fatal prion insomnia, unlike his sisters. He is known to at some point have written the book "Trials and Triumphs".[10]

Dr. Wilhelmina BrayEdit

Eldest daughter[11] of Clovis II and Sylvie. The inventor of the Engram.[12] She also directed the project that created SIVA, which was based on the work of Dr. Zarin Shirazi and in which Dr. Escher Zhang played a critical role.[13][14] She was very ambitious and wanted to run BrayTech along with her siblings after their grandfather's death, and was not very fond of the possibility of him obtaining immortality by becoming an Exo.[15]

Dr. Elisabeth BrayEdit

Middle daughter of Clovis II and Sylvie. Since youth, she was very talented in engineering, building her first Sparrow with her sister Ana's help at the age of thirteen;[16] she also constructed the Jumpships "Eon Trespass" and Shadow Trespass, sword Worldline Zero, worked in Weapons Research & Development in the Clovis Bray corporation and assisted in completing the Sn0 armor project.[17] Her brother Alton recognised her engineering talent, confident she could make his own Sparrow even faster.[18] She suffered from the same disease as her father and Clovis I used this to blackmail her into agreeing to work with him on the Exo project on Europa. She kept her condition secret and allowed her grandfather to turn her into an Exo in order to save her life.[19]

After the Collapse, she became known to Guardians as the "Exo Stranger"; to whom she warned them of the threats the Black Garden posed and much later reappeared to teach them the power of Stasis. It is revealed she has been trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the same events and watch the Witness and its allies take over the Solar System.[20]

Dr. Anastasia BrayEdit

Illegitimate child of Clovis II and youngest of the siblings, made to believe she had been adopted in order to spare her the trauma associated with their family disease and a negative opinion on her father. Sylvie also noticed destructive tendencies in young Ana's behaviour and feared that she might turn out like her cruel and sociopathic grandfather if she knew that she was part of his lineage.[21] Anastasia often felt inferior to her siblings and struggled to feel like a member of the family,[22] due in part to her grandfather, Clovis Bray I, having a negative opinion of her "genetics".[23] She worked as a psycholinguist and helped develop the Warmind Rasputin.

Sometime after the Collapse, Anastasia was found by the Ghost Jinju and resurrected as a Hunter. She is one of the few Guardians who knows her past identity, having been revived with her corporate badge still on her. Thought to have perished in the Battle of the Twilight Gap,[24] she in truth was only wounded but saw an opportunity in the situation, leaving the Last City to investigate her past along with her girlfriend and Owl Sector member Camrin Dumuzi.
