"I have a clear purpose. I cannot explain it. Forgive me."
— Xûr

Xûr[1] is a vendor who sells Exotic items in exchange for Strange Coins in Destiny, and in exchange for Legendary Shards in Destiny 2. In Destiny, he only appears from Friday to Sunday, while in Destiny 2 he appears from Friday to the weekly reset on Tuesdays.[2][1] In Destiny, Xûr appears randomly at one of six locations in the Tower or one location in the Vestian Outpost. In Destiny 2, his location varies every week, appearing in one of three places: at the Watcher's Grave on Nessus, the Hangar in the New Tower, or at the Winding Cove in the European Dead Zone. In The Final Shape, he has a shop in the Tower Bazaar, and he accepts Strange Coins once again.

Overview

Xûr's coming and going depends on the planetary alignments, as he hails from the Jovians, a place beyond even the Reef, past the asteroid belt, which the Guardians have yet to adequately explore. He is subservient to the Nine, the enigmatic rulers of the Jovians.

Xûr claims that his will is not his own, and that he is in complete servitude to The Nine. It is important to note that he is not one of them.

Biography

Xûr first appeared in the Tower after the end of the Great Ahamkara Hunt. Cryptarch Lavinia Garcia Umr Tawil speculated that the Nine had previously made use of the Ahamkara for their paracausal abilities, and had sent Xûr to interact with the Guardians for similar reasons.[3]

Xûr was once confronted by the former Guardian Orin, who was sent by Mara Sov to investigate the Nine's role in the disappearance of Sjur Eido. Xûr asked Orin to "forgive them" while she crushed his windpipe and further interrogated him. After being freed from Orin's grasp, he reached into his robes to reveal a silver jar. Misinterpreting Xûr's actions as a sign of hostility, Orin struck the Agent in the chest with her war hammer, sending him flying, and breaking his spine. Xûr survived, but he acquired a permanently hunched posture due to the blow.[4]

It is possible that Xûr, along with The Nine, were responsible for releasing Skolas from his prison after he was given to them.[5]

Most recently, Xûr has been "employed" by Starhorse, a paracausal being appearing as a celestial horse, as the host of the "game show", Dares of Eternity.

Wares in Destiny 2

Before Forsaken, Xûr appeared either in a predefined spot within the that week's chosen Flashpoint Destination, or else in the Tower, if a DLC Destination was selected. Since then, he still appears in one of his predefined spots, which is randomly selected among all base Destiny 2 Destinations. As of Beyond Light, this location is limited to the Tower, the European Dead Zone, and Nessus.

Instead of Strange Coins, he accepts Legendary Shards. Each week, his available stock of Exotics is randomized, and includes one random armor piece for each class, a random weapon, a special 'fated' or 'isochronal' exotic engram that is guaranteed to decrypt into an as-yet undiscovered non-quest armor or weapon, and assorted other items. If all suitable exotic armor and weapons have been discovered, a new roll of armor for the player's current class is decrypted instead.

In Season of the Lost, Xûr began to offer a selection of Legendary weapons introduced in previous seasons, including older Trials of Osiris and Nightfall weapons, in addition to a random set of vaulted armor. As of The Witch Queen, he will also sell one random roll each of vaulted exotic weapons that feature them. His entire current inventory can be found here.

In The Final Shape, he accepts Strange Coins once again, and he also has a reputation track. Spending Strange Coins causes reputation with Xûr. He also began selling Exotic catalysts for weapons prior to the release of the Witch Queen expansion and allowing players to obtain a buff called Strange Favor after spending 47 Strange Coins. He has set up a permanent shop inside the Tower Bazaar, so he no longer travels between destinations.

Trivia

  • Xûr is voiced by Fred Tatasciore.
  • The Emissary states that Xûr is a prototype.
  • Xûr has sold the famous exotic Rocket Launcher Gjallarhorn on two occasions in Year 1 of Destiny. The first was during the second week he was available to purchase from. However, many people didn't buy it due to either a lack of knowledge or lack of Strange Coins.
  • There was once a bug in Xûr's code that caused him to not sell Three of Coins for a few weeks during Rise of Iron.
  • There is a fan theory that Xûr's presence in the Tower may not be beneficial, despite him outfitting Guardians with Exotic wares. Some fans believe that Xûr is in the Tower to gather intelligence for his superiors.
  • Before Destiny 2 patch 2.0.0, a symbol for Xûr was displayed in the area he was present in. This has now been removed and makes it harder for players to find him.
  • The reason for Xûr's odd posture and voice is explained in the Ecdysis lore book, wherein Orin finds him in a sublunar cavern and "crushes his windpipe" before hitting him with her war hammer, which warped his spine, so that "he will never stand straight again."
  • Xûr received a slight visual update following the release of Destiny 2, with the symbol of The Nine now visible on the torso of his robes, which are also now less baggy.
