Echoes are artifacts of Light and Darkness made from the memories of the various civilizations the Witness conquered prior to its defeat by the Coalition.[1] Upon its initial defeat, the Darkness from its body had diffused itself into a mist which then coalesced with the Traveler's Light, crystalizing into Echoes that scattered across the Sol System.[2]
Overview
After the Witness' defeat within the Pale Heart of the Traveler, several anomalous objects holding immense power[3] exited from the portal on the Traveler and the Valence, with Crow reporting to Zavala that one of them was seen heading towards the area between Jupiter and Neptune at relativistic speeds, before stopping in the orbital path of Nessus.
Based on the reports from the Guardians attempting to retrieve the Echo, it was learned that this particular Echo has the ability to compel, control and command.
