The Echo of Navigation in Kludge

The Echo of Navigation is one of several paracausal artifacts known as Echoes that were released from within the Traveler following the destruction of the Witness. It was created specifically from the memories of Oryx, the Taken King following his slaying of Akka, his communion with the Deep, and the creation of his Dreadnaught.[1]

Description

The Echo vaguely resembles a star or compass rose, with eight blade-like points joined at the center.

History

Episode: Heresy Spoilers ahead

After the destruction of The Witness, its Darkness fused with the Traveler's Light, leading to the creation of several paracausal artifacts known as Echoes. One of these Echoes contained the memories of Oryx in his prime, shortly after he slew Akka and communed with the Deep for the first time. The Echo of Navigation broke away from the Traveler and crashed into Oryx's derelict Dreadnaught, where it would remain within its hull.

The Echo's power would draw the attention of The Dread, an army of reshaped beings created by the Witness to be its servants. With the death of their master, both they and the remaining Taken within the system became aimless, and sought new power and purpose to guide them. Upon encountering the Echo of Navigation, the Dread would end up serving it as their leading commander, Keit'ehr, First of the Reshaped became taken by the Echo and rechristened as The Resonant Knife, First of the Reshaped. The Echo of Navigation would also give rise to a new faction of Taken, known as the Dire Taken. After claiming a powerful army to its side, The Echo of Navigation would seize control over the Dreadnaught's systems, reactivating it after being dormant since Oryx's death.

The Echo would used the Dreadnaught's weapon systems to launch Eversion Anchors all across the solar system. One of which would would touch down in the European Dead Zone, prompting the Vanguard to send in the Guardian to investigate. Meanwhile, Eris Morn and the Drifter would launch their own investigation as they made their way towards the Dreadnaught to find out why the ship has suddenly come back to life. Unfortunately, while the Guardian was successful in shutting down the Eversion Anchor on Earth, the investigation would end in tragedy as The Resonant Knife would ambush and kill Eris, dealing a devastating blow to the Vanguard, and prompting the Guardian to embark on yet another quest for vengeance.

As the Guardian began training with Deputy Commander Sloane to harness Taken power to use for themselves, Their journey led them to investigate Taken energy spikes within Savathûn's Throne World down in the Temple of the Cunning. However, when the Guardian arrives at where the Taken energy spike is, they are confronted by Savathûn herself, who warns them to stay away from the Dreadnaught, claiming this conflict was a family matter.

Ignoring Savathûn's warning, The Guardian would go on to kill three high ranking Hive wizards who were once apart of Oryx's brood as instructed by Sloane, so that they can collect their biological signatures to gain access to the Dreadnaught's bio systems and disable the Eversion Anchors which were linked to the Dreadnaught's main weapon. But after arriving on the Dreadnaught and installing the three Hive body parts into the columns that used to power the Dreadnaught's weapon, The Echo of Navigation finally acknowledges the Guardians presence and speaks. The Guardian is drawn to the Court of Oryx, where the Echo of Navigation reveals itself before them. At the same time, Savathûn and a Knight representing as the Voice of Xivu Arath, all meet together to reunite with their brother. The Echo asks Xivu Arath what has become of their war, to which the God of War responds by saying that Oryx had been slain, and that his killer stands before him. This information catches the Echo off guard, as it had no idea that the real Oryx was dead. Xivu Arath states that Oryx shall rise again once the Guardian is killed. However, the Memory of Oryx dismisses the idea, stating that if he truly is destroyed, then he deserves extinction. Impressed by his killers triumph, the Echo then asks the Guardian to step forward and claim their rightful place as Oryx's heir. Savathûn then tells both Xivu Arath and The Echo to stop acting like children. She tries to convince her siblings that without the Witness, they were finally free to create their own paths. However, Xivu Arath fails to listen to reason and leaves, vowing to avenge her brother and stating that she will not allow her sister to abandon them again. Savathûn leaves as well, as the Echo then summons a large attack force of Dire Taken led by The Resonant Knife to attack the Guardian, forcing them to retreat back to their ship.

After this encounter, and a quick briefing from Sloane, The Guardian would return to the Dreadnaught to continue battling against the Taken and Dread. As they did so, The Echo of Navigation would watch and admire the Guardian as they defeat every challenge the Dreadnaught had to offer them, impressed by their strength and claiming that their destiny was to take up Oryx's mantle. Xivu Arath meanwhile would brief the Echo about events that happened in Oryx's life and events that happened after his death, including the death of the Witness, and his quest for vengeance for the death of Crota. However, the Memory of Oryx would voice his disappointment on how his former self was driven here by sentimental revenge, thus defying his own logic. The Echo would also voice even greater disappointment to Xivu Arath for following the Witness and losing her edge by not accepting Oryx's logic, even saying that Xivu Arath's actions were heresy.
