Dominus Ghaul believed that the Cabal should have been chosen by the Traveler rather than humanity. In assaulting the Last City, he desired to demonstrate to the Traveler that it had made the wrong choice, as well as to harness its [[Light]] for use by the Cabal. He seeks to establish a new order amongst the light, where the [[Cabal]] will rise as newly reborn [[Guardians]].<ref name="Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere Livestream (US)"/>

Ghaul appears to be an adept strategist, planning his invasion during a severe thunderstorm, which concealed his warships from immediate detection by [[The Last City]]. He also managed to disable the Skyline Defense Systems. Ghaul is the most effective enemy of [[The Last City]] observed to date, managing to end the [[City Age]] in the span of several hours, something that took centuries for the other enemy races to accomplish, even [[Oryx]].
