Dark Ether is a Darkness-corrupted variant of Ether. Created when Riven granted Uldren's wish to resurrect Fikrul, the Fanatic by infusing Fikrul's Ether with Uldren's own Darkness, this substance is the source of the Scorn's strange powers.
Properties[edit]
Dark Ether lingers instead of dissipating like normal Ether and is described by Variks as a fog-like vapor that one moves through like water, heavy and opaque,[1] and appears to cause damage to those lingering inside the Dark Ether over time.[citation needed]
Fikrul can use the substance to resurrect dead Eliksni and Scorn, including himself, while the Machinist can do the same from Ether Rituals. Raiders can turn themselves into clouds of Dark Ether, becoming intangible and invisible aside from a trail of vapor to sneak past enemies and reform at a better vantage point. It can also be used to create rifts to teleport Scorn forces to battle.
Resurrected individuals appear to be able to survive without a head, as shown by Ravagers and Abominations. Repeated resurrections have a physical toll on the user, leading to the progressive formation of tumor-like growths and increasing mental derangement. Eventually, Eliksni who have undergone many resurrections will become Screebs, mindless, crawling Thrall-like monstrosities who throw themselves at enemies and self-destruct in a blast of Dark Ether. Scorn can also be engorged in size by being "drowned" in Dark Ether, which the Loyalists of Emperor Calus did to captured Scorn aboard the Glykon Volatus.[2]
During Variks's early experiments with Dark Ether, the servitors he used to drain the Dark Ether from an imprisoned Fikrul malfunctioned and self-destructed violently, suggesting that elements within Dark Ether damage the mechanisms in the machines, leaving them shattered and lifeless.[1] The rogue Light-bearer known as the Drifter also had difficulty in experimenting with Dark Ether, finding it near impossible to control or create items similar to a Mote of Dark.[3]
According to Fynch, Dark Ether "wears pinholes in reality", which can be expanded by the Scorn to be used as a means of teleportation.[4]
