According to what records survive, the First Mind was created in an attempt to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and true sentience: the initiation of a new order of life, unfettered by any preconceptions of the universe or the narrow limits of human senses. But something went wrong.

However, this protection inevitably comes with costs to mobility, mass, and economy. Armor is in vain if it's such a burden that soldiers won't wear it, or is simply too costly to produce.
