They begin to hunt down the answers by delving deeper into Nessus, beneath the Well of Flame. After defeating the new Baron of the House of Dusk and [[Hypolydron, Captive Mind]], they would begin to learn that the radiolaria is diverted and transported deep underground to fuel the Conductor's ambitions of locating the real version of [[Chioma Esi]]. They would uncover a Vex city upon defeating [[Kamarian, Radial Overseer]] and enhancing Failsafe's mainframe within the H.E.L.M. The Vex city is found on Nessus's [[Planetary Core]], where long ago, the Vex began to turn the planetoid into a Machine World and now serve as the Conductor's domain.
They eventually meet the Conductor after defeating [[Antioptes, Hypogean Sentinel]] and recovering the memories of Saint-14 from the archived simulation of the [[Infinite Forest]]. The Conductor reveals herself as Maya Sundaresh, who is planning to use the radiolaria to enact a second Golden Age, but they narrowly escape as she threatens to turn them into Vex. Failsafe then instructs them to uncover the secrets contained within the planetary core. They soon learn of the Conductor's experiments when they discover data contained on the degaussed [[Exo]]minds within the Conductor’s lab. At one point, the Conductor also experimented with a pair of [[Batadactyl]]s in her attempts to locate the Chioma Esi she remembers. They then defeat the Hydra frames sent by the Conductor and enhance Failsafe's mainframe to its maximum potency. After arriving too late to save the real Chioma Esi from the Conductor's cruelty, they confront her outside her lab. She was able to escape with the Echo remaining in her possession, but the planet itself began to become dormant.

7066 Nessus is a Centaur minor planet with an irregular orbit. At perihelion, Nessus is closer to the Sun than Uranus; at aphelion, Nessus moves into the Kuiper belt. It is a place where light is scarce.[3] It had been partially converted into a Vex Machine World[4], and is currently also occupied by Fallen and Cabal forces.
Following the Red War, Nessus was partially consumed by Emperor Calus Leviathan, so that its soil could be used to make Royal Wine. Most recently, it has come under the control of Maya Sundaresh, who took control of the local Vex using the Echo of Command in order to create the Nessian Schism.
History[edit]
At some point, the Vex arrived on Nessus and began converting it into a Machine World with the intent to use it as a repository for defunct digital data, with the Vex Mind Argos, Planetary Core overseeing the conversion process from the planetoid's center.[5][6]
Golden Age[edit]
During the Golden Age, the Colony ship Exodus Black crash-landed on Nessus en route to Kepler-186. This came as a surprise to the ship's crew, as Nessus was not projected to be near their flight path; the ship's AI Failsafe suggested that the ship's crash may have been due to its orbital momentum (referred to as a four-vector, for the dimensions of space and time) being folded away into six extra dimensions, presumably by the Vex.[7]
As the crew of the Exodus Black tried and failed to contact help, they and the ship's complement of colonists were either killed or captured and experimented on by the Vex, with the minds of the ship's captain and possibly other crew or passengers being uploaded into the Vex Network.[8] Unable to establish contact with the rest of the Solar System, Failsafe powered down and became inactive.
Post-Collapse[edit]
Approximately 126 years before the SIVA Crisis, Nessus re-entered the Sol System after an unexpected delay.[9] By this time, the Vex had converted 92.014% of the Centaur.[6]
Red War[edit]
Following the Red Legion's invasion of Earth, they began to mobilize their forces across Nessus in an attempt to uncover any secrets it harbored, setting up drilling platforms[10], shipyards[11] and bases such as Firebase Echo. During this time, they came into conflict with the local Vex as well as the Fallen House of Dusk, who were scavenging whatever they could from the remnants of the Exodus Black.[12]
Post-Red War[edit]
Following the death of Dominus Ghaul, the exiled Cabal Emperor Calus arrived in the Sol System aboard his flagship, the Leviathan, which began to consume the planetoid and process its soil into Royal Wine. [13] This caused Argos, Planetary Core to be sucked into the Leviathan's interior along with a squadron of Vex, forcing Calus to call upon the Guardians to destroy the Vex Mind. With the destruction of Argos, the Vex's conversion of the planetoid was halted.[14]
The Guardian would also continue to work with Failsafe on numerous missions, including stopping several Vex experiments and stealing data from them, as well as preventing the Fallen from attacking her wreckage.[15][16][17][18]
When working with Sagira to save Osiris from the Infinite Forest, the Guardian tracked down an Entangled Mind on Nessus to use its eye to find his location.[19]
When the Kell's Scourge began seeking out the Lost Forges of the Black Armory, they were intercepted smuggling Armory tech from the planet, leading the Guardians to the Gofannon Forge in the ruins of the Exodus Black. The Guardians reclaimed the Forge and repelled the Scourge's attempts to reclaim it.[20] Following a set of Vex coordinates subsequently led the Guardians to the Izanami Forge, which was being integrated into the surrounding Vex structures. The Guardians reclaimed this Forge as well and defended it from the encroaching Vex.[21]
When the Black Fleet arrived, Nessus was one of the few worlds in the outer Solar System that was left untouched by the Pyramids. However, sometime after the Fleet's arrival, Calus and the Leviathan departed Nessus's orbit, leaving the Machine World only partially consumed.[22]
Some time afterwards, Calus's daughter and current leader of the Cabal Empire, Caiatl, arrived in the Sol System with her legions. Nessus was the first world to be invaded, with an Imperial Land Tank being deployed in the Arcadian Valley. It was here where her forces and the Guardians first clashed against one another in a bid for dominance over the system.[23]
Over the ages, many Fallen Pirate Crews hid their treasures on Nessus;[citation needed] these would be sought after by The Guardian as they fought against the crews that sided with Eramis, Kell of Darkness in her search for the relics of Nezarec. This closeness also made Mithrax, Kell of Light realize that the Vex sought to punish him for his intrusion into their Network during the Endless Night, and made him decide to avoid the planet in the future.[24]
Upheaval[edit]
After the Coalition defeated the Witness within the Pale Heart, paracausal artifacts called Echoes were created from a collision of Light and Darkness. One, the Echo of Command, would land on the planetoid, and be claimed by Maya Sundaresh[25][26] who would use its power to compel the Nessus Vex and pull Precursors out of time to serve her under the moniker of The Conductor.[27] As a result of this, the Vex under her control began to develop independent thought and Nessus itself would begin to undergo a transformation brought about by the Echo's presence.
Ikora would task the Guardian with investigating the mysterious disturbance on the planetoid with Osiris, Saint-14, and Failsafe running tactical. While tracking down the Echo's impact site into the Chamber of Sky, they fight though Vex with silica structures around their necks.[28] After fighting through the new collective and uploading Failsafe into the H.E.L.M. mainframe, they continue their investigations by collecting Radiolite samples and uncovering an entrance to the Vex Network within the Well of Echoes.[29][30]
As they continue their investigations, they discover that the Echoes arms race has begun when the Eliksni from the House of Salvation were able to enter Failsafe's mainframe within the Exodus Black, led by Pykis, House Salvation, and the Eliksni of the House of Dusk, led by Kalliks, Baron of House Dusk, allied themselves with the Shadow Legion.[12][31] They are forced to conclude their investigations when Saint falls under the possession of the Conductor. They follow his last known coordinates into the Well of Flame. They were able to find him, but he began to question whether he was the real Saint. Realizing the danger of Saint's situation, they shift their attention to unraveling the Conductor’s motives.[32]
They begin to hunt down the answers by delving deeper into Nessus, beneath the Well of Flame. After defeating the new Baron of the House of Dusk and Hypolydron, Captive Mind, they would begin to learn that the radiolaria is diverted and transported deep underground to fuel the Conductor's ambitions of locating the real version of Chioma Esi. They would uncover a Vex city upon defeating Kamarian, Radial Overseer and enhancing Failsafe's mainframe within the H.E.L.M. The Vex city is found on Nessus's Planetary Core, where long ago, the Vex began to turn the planetoid into a Machine World and now serve as the Conductor's domain.
They eventually meet the Conductor after defeating Antioptes, Hypogean Sentinel and recovering the memories of Saint-14 from the archived simulation of the Infinite Forest. The Conductor reveals herself as Maya Sundaresh, who is planning to use the radiolaria to enact a second Golden Age, but they narrowly escape as she threatens to turn them into Vex. Failsafe then instructs them to uncover the secrets contained within the planetary core. They soon learn of the Conductor's experiments when they discover data contained on the degaussed Exominds within the Conductor’s lab. At one point, the Conductor also experimented with a pair of Batadactyls in her attempts to locate the Chioma Esi she remembers.

Trivia[edit]
- In early development, The Myriad was a working title for Nessus.[citation needed]
- Large parts of Failsafe's ship, the Exodus Black, can be found along parts of Nessus. Scannables in the area indicate that Failsafe's crew tried to escape and survive, but died due to a lack of food and supplies.[33]
- Failsafe's crew do refer to the presence of the Vex, suggesting that the cyborgs were present when they arrived. Failsafe referred to the fact that she had been on Nessus long enough to see the Vex take over the entire planet, convert approximately 92% of it into a machine world like Mercury, and kill all life forms.[6]
- Armor and various lore pieces from Nessus have even suggested that the original crew of the Exodus Black was headed for Kepler 186f, a habitable planet very far from the Sol System. Some unknown force (possibly Vex technology) caused the ship to lose control and veer towards Nessus, which was near its path at the time. The engines and some parts of the ship malfunctioned, resulting in a crash landing. That was when the crew of the Exodus Black would face the Vex and meet their ends.
- Some birds and small animals can be seen flying over and around areas on Nessus. Plant life also exists there. It is unknown whether Nessus actually held life before the arrival of the Vex. Neither Ghost nor the other Vanguard members suggest that the Traveler terraformed it, however, some scannables give evidence that the life on Nessus is artificial, being created by the Vex for unknown purposes.[citation needed]
- Prior to the introduction of Neptune with the release of Lightfall, Nessus was the farthest location the Guardians have traveled to in the Destiny series.
