Praetorians are champions of the Vex, charged with protecting the legendary Vault of Glass. A deadlier, more aggressive variant of the Minotaur, Praetorians have reinforced Void shields and always use the standard Minotaur weapon, the Torch Hammer. Their primary purpose appears to be to defend and reset Sync Plates from non-Vex forces, as Sync Plates activate numerous pieces of Vex technology. Upon capturing the three Sync Plates to construct the Spire that unseals the Vault's main entrance, Praetorians will spawn relentlessly to stop the Spire's completion. More are encountered while facing the Gatekeeper, and will again attempt to reset nearby Sync Plates.
During the mission Wolves' Gambit, the Fallen House of Wolves manages to break the seal of the Vault of Glass and enter it to harness the power of the Oracles. Praetorian variants called "Headless Praetorians" can be found attempting to fight off the Wolves that guard the Vault's entrance. Headless Praetorians lack heads, possibly due to battle damage inflicted by the Wolves, yet unlike standard Minotaurs that lose their heads they retain the ability to regenerate their shields, but do not charge at attackers.
They are silver-white in color, much like the Precursors.
Trivia
- "Praetorian" is an adjective derived from the ancient Roman office of praetor. The term is most commonly associated with the Praetorian Guard, the Roman emperor's personal bodyguards.
