The North American Empire, sometimes called "the twin eagles", was the largest voluntary retronationalist republic on Earth during the Golden Age. Its insignia featured twin eagles, hence the metonym.[1] As a voluntary society, the North American Empire's sovereignty was limited, and its actions ultimately accountable to higher authority.[2] Members were noted for a love of "military pageantry and muscular aerospace displays."[3]
Its economy was less regulated than elsewhere during the Golden Age, allowing corporations like Clovis Bray potentially unethical freedom and power in how they conducted business.[2]
Trivia
- The empire bears resemblance to the United States by way of iconography.
- The United Republic of North America, or URNA, is a geo-political body that appears in one of Bungie's previous franchises, Halo, and is very similar in concept to Destiny's North American Empire. Both could be references to the real world North American Union.
- First mentioned in Destiny, the nature of the North American Empire was elaborated on in material released for Shadowkeep. Inspiration was taken from the Terra Ignota book series by Ada Palmer, [4] in which Earth's conventional nation-states had dissolved and been replaced by a set of common laws applicable to all human beings and optional, voluntary membership in non-geographical nations called Hives.
- Author notes further describe the North American Empire's retro nationalism as "where everybody gets together to build rockets, wave flags, and have gigantic airshows", and "the actualized version of the feeling you get while watching the launch sequence in Apollo 13."
