Crota's Presence |
Crota, Son of Oryx is a god-like, ancient leader of the Hive, infamous for wielding the Sword of Crota and killing countless Guardians during the City's ill-fated campaign to reclaim the Moon. Crota is the main villain in The Dark Below, where the Hive have awoken Crota to lead their armies against humanity.
Biography
Crota is one of the many gods worshiped by the Hive. Though he is the "youngest" member of this pantheon, he is noted to be "the heir to the Osmium Throne", a position of high importance among the Hive.[1] He is thus far the only Hive god that has acted directly against humanity, and is believed to be bent on conquering Earth for the sake of his creator, Oryx.[2][3] Crota has a sect devoted to him, who are lead in the field by Omnigul,[4] though he himself belongs to the Blood of Oryx sect.
Six Guardians attempted to kill Crota, but the Hive managed to trap his soul. Crota in this world is invincible; that is because his true form only exists within his own netherworld created by his divine will.[5][6] Only one of the Guardians, Eris, survived to tell the tale. His sect also plays a major role in Crota's attempted revival during The Dark Below, which threatened the whole City with a full-scale Hive invasion. Though the crystal tethering his soul in the Chamber of Night was destroyed, banishing him from this world, Crota himself was not truly destroyed until another team of six Guardians confronted him in the deepest pit of the Hellmouth.[7]
Crota's demise ultimately caught the attention of his creator, Oryx, whom would lead an army of Taken in revenge against the Guardians. [8]
Gameplay
Crota is only mentioned in the base game, but players are tasked with finding and destroying the Sword of Crota.
The players are tasked with killing Crota's Soul in The Wakening. It is a large crystal that fires powerful blasts at the player and is protected by many Hive, including four Watcher of Crota.
Crota himself is the final boss of the raid Crota's End. Players must defeat Ir Yût, the Deathsinger before Crota will appear; he is a tall hive Knight wielding a massive sword and glowing green. On top of that, he also posses a projectile attack much like what wizards use. Crota is protected by a shield, and even with his shield down he is invulnerable to attack except with an Ascendant Sword. Crota's mere presence prevents Guardians from healing without the assistance of a Chalice of Light.[7]
