Crota, Son of Oryx is an ancient ruler of the Hive, who led them in past conflicts, including battles against humanity, where he conquered the Moon. He wielded the Sword of Crota, a weapon used to kill countless Guardians. Crota is the main villain in The Dark Below, where the Hive have awoken Crota to attack humanity. Crota is one of the many gods worshiped by the Hive, and though he is considered the "youngest," he is the one most people are familiar with as he's the only one that has acted directly against humanity. He is typically the one described as conquering Earth for the sake of his his creator Oryx.[1][2] Crota has a sect devoted to him, who are lead in the field by Omnigul,[3] though he himself belongs to the Blood of Oryx sect.
Six Guardians attempted to kill Crota, but the Hive managed to trap his soul. Crota in this world is invincible; that is because his true form only exists within his own netherworld created by his divine will.[4][5] Only one of the Guardians, Eris, survived to tell the tale. Crota's revival will mean a full-scale Hive invasion of Earth and its inevitable destruction. Though the player can destroy the crystal housing his soul in the Chamber of Night to banish him from this world, Crota himself is not truly destroyed until another team of six guardians destroys him in the deepest pit of the Hellmouth.[6]
Gameplay
Crota is only mentioned in the base game, but players are tasked with finding and destroying the Sword of Crota.
The players are tasked with killing Crota's Soul in The Wakening. It is a large crystal that fires powerful blasts at the player and is protected by many Hive, including four Watcher of Crota.
Crota himself is the final boss of the raid Crota's End. Players must defeat Ir Yût, the Deathsinger before Crota will appear; he is a tall hive Knight wielding a massive sword and glowing green. On top of that, he also posses a projectile attack much like what wizards use. Crota is protected by a shield, and even with his shield down he is invulnerable to attack except with an Ascendant Sword. Crota's mere presence prevents Guardians from healing without the assistance of a Chalice of Light.[6]
