- "Our King is dead. The Lunar and Traitor broods flock to his sisters' wings, but you. You mighty many who know the Sword Logic must be adhered to.. No running. No heresy. Oryx would have wanted us to fight how he did, and if we fail, to die as he did. We are the Spite of the King, and we shall never cease in our pursuit for our Final Shape as he did. We are many, and we are mighty."
- — Kharyx, the Navigator's Lullaby addressing her broods
Kharyx, the Navigator's Lullaby is the defacto leader of Oryx, the Taken King's broods after his death. She also is the Taken King's second mate. She served as the brood mother to the Blood of Oryx sect.
BiographyEdit
Ancient HistoryEdit
Kharyx (at the time named 'Khyra') was a princess to a rival kingdom of the Osmium Court. When Auryx, Savathûn, and Xivu Arath arose from the deep and began their conquest, Khyra saw the might of the Hive and sabotaged her dynasty. She then swore loyalty to the Hive and Auryx's brood specifically.
The now Kharyx would serve as Auryx and later Oryx's head researcher and discovered many things of the Darkness. Most notably that of Soulfire, which became invaluable to Oryx's brood and later all of the Hive after Savathûn stole the secrets to soulfire for herself. Savathûn would also then gift the knowledge of Soulfire to Xivu Arath after the God of War helped Malok, Scion of Savathûn kill Oryx's then mate.
A New PurposeEdit
After Oryx nearly met his final death at the hands of his siblings, he decided he needed children to ensure the Sword Logic flowed and his power was secured. However, he'd need a new mate for this thanks to his sisters. Kharyx would accept and became his second mate and brood mother to the Blood of Oryx. The first direct son of her and Oryx's pact was that of Crota, who Oryx would dub the Darkest Edge. Crota was a mutant Hive with light green skin and an otherworldly level of power, enough for him to in no time even rival Oryx's siblings in sheer combat power alone. Crota adored his mother only in a way a Hive could, clearly favoring tithing to his mother and would regularly challenge her to battle for sake of the Sword Logic. Kharyx was always proud of the Darkest Edge, even after he was expunged from the Hive due to his incident with the Vex.
The next were the twins Ir Halak, Deathsinger and Ir Anûk, Deathsinger, born from a divided egg that refused to die. They'd go on to overshadow their mother in discovery; creating the Oversoul, Deathsong, the Totems of Annihilation, and more. Mostly thanks to Savathûn's communion with them guiding their discoveries. Kharyx was always suspicious of this communion occurring but never truly caught on to it.
Finally was a runt who from a young age was a scavenger, feasting on dead Hive and weakened foes rather than earning his tithing like all Hive should. This fascinated Kharyx and she often humored that all her and Oryx's power went into Crota and their wit into the twins, leaving this one starved of purpose. However she'd also have Oryx spare the runt, curious of how he'd turn out. Upon the runt taking an Acolyte morph, she'd name it 'Nokris', meaning "Starved of Worth". However when Nokris became a Wizard and then even a Prince with his own brood, he'd seek to prove his mother and his name wrong and gain his father's favor by any means.
RegicideEdit
Crota's death shook the Hive pantheon to its core; fascinating Savathûn, drawing Xivu Arath's attention, and enraging the Taken King. Oryx would order Kharyx to stay out of Sol and continue her war against a weak but persistent race that existed on another plane of reality known as the Gravity Shadow.
During the war against the Gravity Shadow, suddenly Kharyx would collapse, a massive hole punched into her soul. Her king was dead. Her daughters slaughtered, her Warpriest bested, Golgoroth-her personal research project into the depths of the Darkness massacred. The Light had shattered the Hive of Sol and taken her king and spawn from her. As much as she desired to take her vengeance now, she honored her king's wishes and continued to battle the Gravity Shadow, a new rage filling her mind every time she saw one call upon the few remaining pools of Light they had left.
Broken SalvationEdit
During the time of Beyond Light, the now named Spite of the King brood would successfully wipe out the Gravity Shadow, and Kharyx would begin her journey to Sol. During this time she'd keep in contact with the broods of Sol, seeing them one by one abandon their king's way of life. The Spawn of Crota disappeared into the Hidden Swarm, the Grasp of Nokris would consolidate into Savathûn's Brood or Taken alongside all of Mars, and then later the Hidden Swarm itself pledged allegiance to Savathûn, then Savathûn herself would abandon them all for the Light.
Kharyx was infuriated by all this. This wasn't what their king led them to be. If Oryx saw this he would personally guy every last one of them and devour their souls. However nothing would hit as hard as hearing a Disciple, Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness, was murdered. Such a powerful entity that even Oryx feared, kill by these "Guardians"? Impossible. But it'd be proven again when Nezarec, Final God of Pain was reborn but just as quickly destroyed. Even The Witness' newest Disciple would fall. Then finally, like clockwork, The Witness itself was sundered and destroyed. Kharyx was left broken.
The being that promised her and her king purpose and salvation was destroyed. Rumors were even spreading across the Hive thanks to Savathûn that what it told them was a lie, that their entire existence was a lie, their purpose was a lie, the Final Shape was not what It promised them. Kharyx's brood waited outside of Sol, their morale shattered and at this point, Kharyx simply waited to die and sought a way to detach herself from her throne world so she could die for good at the hands of her Worm, the very crux of the lie she was sold. That was until a strange mote of Light and Dark shattered through her fleet and pierced her body. Where it tore through War moons and Tombships like they weren't there, it rested within her heart like it was destiny to reside within it. She surged with power as the echoes of all her rage and wrath emerged once again, drowning her sadness.
These Guardians were to pay and their Traveler gutted. This coalition would be shattered and destroyed. Savathûn was to be clipped of her wings and strung up to wither and be feasted on by Kharyx's brood like an animal, her ghost left alive solely to bring her back to life again and again to render her suffering indefinite. Xivu Arath would be put back into her place and be reminded who the God of the Hive truly is. And this murderer of Oryx, they'd be dealt with personally. These Echoes were to be hers and hers alone. She had found her shape, and it was that of Vengeance.
Swelling PowerEdit
Kharyx's form began to mutate as her power and rage swelled. She used her extensive magic and the power from the Echo of Vengeance to keep her body normal. However it was a fragile spell that'd waver whenever she exerted herself. Because of this, she'd forge the spell into many talisman she'd adorn her helmet with, but she'd never truly repair her face and would go on to hide it behind a veil of darkness. By now it's hard to even say she's truly Hive behind her illusion spell as the Echo of Vengeance continues to evolve her form. However she has cared little as thanks to the Echo her brood as exploded in numbers and her power as risen to heights even her king could have never imagined. She was going to make sure the Light knew what it truly meant to suffer.
Personality and TraitsEdit
Kharyx adores her brood and loves them the only way a Hive could. She finds their purpose in her Sword Logic irreplaceable. Every time a prince or witch is killed it only fuels her rage further. Kharyx is a doting mother, loving god, and kin-hearted. But this is in the way Hive love. She believes in the Sword Logic in its entirety. She pushes her brood to their limits and forces them to either grow beyond and achieve new heights, or die forgotten and weak, either way the Sword Logic is appeased.
Kharyx hates every single Lightbearer on a personal level, every last one. However Savathûn, The Guardian, and Eris Morn are her most hated. She will do anything in her power to get her hands on any of them so she can personally take her revenge. She whole-heartedly believes Light brings nothing but pain unless tempered by Darkness in a way only the Echoes can provide, only she can provide. She will see to it that the pain Light brings is her, she is that pain. The Final Queen of Pain that will be the nightmare upon the Traveler and its minions. She is determined to see to it this torment will never stop until she has all of the Echoes in her possession and her enemies are as broken as she was when she lost her king.
Thanks to the Echo of Vengeance, Kharyx has an unbreakable spirit. She will always find the energy and wrath to continue her war and seek greater power. The Spite of the King will never rest, and neither shall the Lightborn, not so long as she lives. Kharyx speaks to her brood as a caring but galvanized god would, talking down and motivating them with hateful words and proclamations of victory before the battle even begins. Every battle is a feast of Light, and she ensures her brood is starving before every skirmish.
StrengthsEdit
Thanks to the might of the Echo of Vengeance, Kharyx is the strongest Hive to have ever existed. But where her strength isn't power like Xivu Arath, nor trickery like Savathûn, or even knowledge like her king, it's determination. She knows attrition will win out. As numerous as they are, there are and will only be so many Lightbearers, Hive or human. Meanwhile so long as her Court and she is alive, there will be no end to the Spite of the King brood.
Strangely, even upon her death in her own throne world at the hands of a fireteam led by Crow, Kharyx did not die for good. It was found out she somehow folded her throne world upon itself, making some kind of mobius strip-like structure that causes it to endlessly reside deeper within itself. She can always retreat to a further sanctum, another realm of her dimension, it is a physical paradox. This effectively makes her immortal. Until a solution is found, simply keeping her in check is all that can be done. And due to her viscous nature and her ever-evolving plans, this becomes more difficult every victory that's achieved.
Whatever her true form is, she goes to any length, even death, to hide it as she has grown disgusted by it. However she still accepts her ever-evolving form if it means the Echo can give her the strength she needs to overcome and devour the Light.
Possible WeaknessEdit
- "The Queen of the Deep, she hides her true form, her killable form, behind a thin veil of Dark and Light. If we can peel this veil away, perhaps we can find a way to sever her from her throne world as I did Xivu Arath before. Then, finish her."
- — Eris Morn
Kharyx hides her face in a veil of Darkness to ensure no one sees even a hint of her true nature. It's theorized by Eris that her talisman on her helmet are what keep this veil up. She claims that possibly removing or destroying them would cause the amount of Light within the Echo to sever her connection to her throne world and leave her vulnerable to a truly final death.
However, whatever her true form is clearly is something far more powerful than she is even now. Only the strongest champions of wielding both Light and Dark can even dare to take this challenge on of removing the talisman. And only fewer still can survive, much less slay whatever may lie beneath.
