The Haruspex is a Dread unit created by Ir Dralcha with the aid of captured Light and Darkness, as well as the memories and guidance from the Echo of Obsession.

Overview[edit]

"Zalok, willing blade, faithful servant. You come before me with open arms. A sacrificial worm willing to die for the prosperity of the swarm. You leave behind your wants and deeds with wanton abandon. (...) To flay reality's fine layers has always been your curiosity. To explicate them, your obsession. The torment of it, your fascination. May it now be your charge."
Ir Dralcha to Zalok

Much like other Dread created by Ir Dralcha, the Haruspex would be created with channeled founts of Light and Darkness to create new, powerful forms to fill the ranks of the Banished Swarm. Once a necromancer of Ir Vicsza's court named Zalok, she would willingly offer herself to the Crownless Queen for personal power and sacrifice. Flayed down with resonant power channeled through the memories and power of the Echo of Obsession, she would internalize her thoughts, focusing on her desires before ultimately being consumed by the pain. In her final moments of lucidity, all she could do was laugh at the pain of being twisted and hollowed out by the transformation, a manic, soul-powered laugh that would pervade every splintered fragment of her that would become the Haruspex.

The Haruspex bears a striking resemblance to that of Brood Queens and the standard Wizard, their bodies decked in armor and equipment similar to that of the Witness's own Dread. Their heads and horns are composed of the same jet-black metallic material seen on other dread, and their face-plates glowing a faint purple with the entropic energies within. They are decked in indigo-colored armor, with similar white spiky material seen on other Dread such as the Subjugator creating a neck crest and additional forearm armor. Their lower halves are seemingly missing, replaced only with resonant smoke seen billowing out from their robes, making them seem as if they are coming out from the ground itself, their robes covering a vast swathe of the area around them; the center cloth piece connected to the breastplate bears a similar, colorful pattern similar to that seen on Tormentors. Behind them is a bunch of pyramidal, spiky material that the Haruspex can channel energies and attacks from, allowing it to cast mines across the area and even swiftly fashion a blade from the material if dealing with a nearby intruder.

Gameplay[edit]

Haruspices are usually encountered in scripted events and typically emerge to ambush Guardians; though they can be encountered on patrol, they usually lack a few gameplay features. Despite their low profile, a Guardian can tell one is nearby by the distorted laughter and Dread speak. A Haruspex will typically hang back and try to avoid direct confrontation with their opponents, choosing instead to hit them from a distance with their pyramidal power. Their main attack is Void Leeching Barrage which, after a quick wave of their hand, launches a volley of 5 swift, tracking bolts at their target. The Haruspex can also swirl their hands in a circular motion to create a slow, yet powerful Void Ephemeral Nova, which tracks a Guardian until it hits a surface. The Ephemeral Nova creates a lingering area of denial that damages all within proximity to it while also weakening them. Clasping their hands together and channeling Void energy for a few seconds will allow them to fire off a Void Void Convulsion beam that can deal significant damage to anyone hit by the beam. Any surface struck by the Void Convulsion also leaves behind Void Caustic Ebullition walls of fire that damages any enemy who crosses it; both effects from the beam applies Volatile to a target. Finally, their more iconic and threatening attack is the ability to deploy Atrophy Sores around the area, which violently explode when a target is nearby, applying a debuff called Void Metaphysical Atrophy, dealing damage overtime, Slowing down enemies while also Weakening them. Though this attack can be annoying to deal with, these Atrophy Sores can seen by a faint indigo glow on the ground and can be safely destroyed at range.

Haruspices excel at range, and lack anything truly extraordinary in close combat. It is worth knowing, however, that if a Guardian gets too close, the Haruspex can cleave them apart with a hastily conjured Solar Shard Blade that can deal considerable damage on higher difficulties. Thus, players should get within close enough range to effectively nullify the Haruspex's more fearsome attacks while also keeping a good enough distance so as to avoid retaliation. If threatened enough, however, the Haruspex may eventually call upon the resonant shards and vanish into the ground, causing the Haruspex to disappear for a duration. After enough time has elapsed, the Haruspex will emerge once more, this time, in a new location, once again placed at a far enough distance to once again start harrying their opponents with their far more formidable attacks.
