On Destinypedia, CheckUser is a tool that can be accessed by the administration to examine user IP information and other server log data under certain circumstances for the purposes of protecting Destinypedia against disruption and abuse from users who may be utilizing multiple IPs and accounts to vandalize the wiki. CheckUser itself simply produces log information and even with the tool, can require considerable skill and experience to investigate some cases.
Grounds for checking
The CheckUser tool is to be used to fight vandalism, check for sockpuppet activity, limit disruption or potential disruption of the Destinypedia project, and to investigate legitimate concerns of bad faith editing or suspected ban-evasion in cases of extreme vandalism.
The tool should not be used for political control; for example, to apply pressure on editors or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. Like all restricted tools, it is to be used to keep Destinypedia clear of vandalism, spam, and users who make malicious edits, but not for simple disagreements between actions in good faith. Editors abusing the CheckUser tool may be subject to ban or an immediate rank demotion depending on the severity of the infraction.
CheckUser and privacy policy
The CheckUser feature accesses non-public information that is stored on a private log. Information revealed from CheckUser scans may occasionally be shared amongst the administration for discussion or investigation purposes only, but such information should never be given out to the public. The privacy of Destinypedia's editors is taken extremely seriously, and there are times when a conflict between priorities is given to both protecting the wiki from damage and disruption, and the privacy of problematic users. This is a very delicate area and at times no solution is ideal. Administration is encouraged to take its time in determining a suitable course of action and even neglecting it at times if such action may undermine the cause of Destinypedia to begin with.
List of users with CheckUser access
Users with CheckUser access are listed here. If you suspect malicious sockpuppet activity, you can contact any of these users to investigate, however, evidence must be provided with any report made. A CheckUser will, if necessary, require further action if results are positive.
