Destiny 2 is the title for the upcoming sequel to the shared-worlds FPS Destiny, set for release in 2017 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 platforms.[5][2] The PC version will require the Blizzard App to launch, and will feature cross-platform functionality with other Blizzard titles. This includes using "Blizzard Balance" to purchase features of the game, and cross-platform chat functionality.[6]

Plot

Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. He has stripped the city’s Guardians of their power, and forced the survivors to flee. You will venture to mysterious, unexplored worlds of our solar system to discover an arsenal of weapons and devastating new combat abilities. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.[7][8][9]

Features

Destiny 2 will reportedly include a new Patrol zone on Mars, a location which was originally planned for The Taken King, but was cut due to time and resource constraints.[1] Bungie has also resolved to make Destiny 2 feel like a proper sequel and not just a large cut of DLC, meaning that old planets, characters, weapons, armor, shaders and emblems, as well as [10] activities and microtransaction purchases will be left behind. Bungie is also planning to institute a change to the Patrol missions in the form of "play-in destinations" — a new activity model that will revamp how the world functions, with the goal of making planet areas feel more populated with towns, outposts, and quests that are more like a traditional open-world MMO, and interesting than the standard, single-function patrol missions given in Destiny.[2] Theree are also rumors that the patrol zones will also feature built-in PvP arenas, similar to The Division's Dark Zone, where any player in it can be engaged with.

The game will feature downloadable content, but the DLC will be released after the base game.[11] Players who have not preordered Destiny 2 with the corresponding special editions will have to purchase the expansions separately.[citation needed] The two expansion packs will reportedly be centered around the Trials of Osiris tournament and the titular figure behind it, as well as the ancient Warmind Rasputin for expansions 1 and 2, respectively. Players that have preordered Destiny 2 with the expansion packs will automatically receive access to the expansions upon release for the general public to purchase.

Character aesthetics such as face, sex, markings, etc. will be preserved and carried over for old players from Destiny 1, as long as those characters have both reached Level 20 and have completed The Black Garden Story mission. Everything aside from aethstetics will not transfer over to Destiny 2 to make the game feel like a fresh start and not a direct continuation of the original game. "Veteran accounts" will be given "honors that reflect their Destiny 1 accomplishments", although the specifics as to what those rewards will be are still to be released and confirmed.[10][12] Power, armor & weapons, currencies, and Eververse-related items will not be carried over.[10][12]

New Cinematic Campaign

Destiny 2 will feature an all-new cinematic campaign with a host of new Story missions and cutscenes that will form a story unlike that seen in its predecessor. The first mission, Homecoming, sends Guardians on a journey to take back The Last City and the Traveler from the Red Legion, led by Dominus Ghaul.

New Cooperative Missions

There will be brand new Strikes in Destiny 2, which will require up to 3 players to fully complete. One such strike is The Inverted Spire, which sends Guardians on an attack against a Vex stronghold on Nessus and will culminate in a 3-stage boss encounter.

New Competitive Multiplayer

The Crucible will function differently in Destiny 2. All game modes will feature two teams of four across the board. In-game, there will be a new HUD that gives the player information on the enemy team, like when their Super is ready, or when they picked up ammo for their power weapons. There will also be a brand new maps and game modes. One of the new game modes, for example, is called Countdown, which is the first attack-defend game mode in the Crucible.

New Challenging Raids

Destiny 2 will feature a new Raid.

New Patrol Modes

Patrol activities in Destiny 2 will feature all activities from the Patrol Mode of its predecessor: patrol missions, Public Events, materials, and loot chests. However, there will also be new Heroic Objectives, Adventures, Treasure Maps and Lost Sectors to explore. To assist in exploring these areas, players will be able to use a map that marks all activities.

New Travel Destinations

Destiny 2 will feature four new destinations: European Dead Zone, Titan, Io, and Nessus. Each will feature their own detailed environments.

Weapon System

Instead of the primary, special, and heavy weapons in Destiny, the weapon slots in Destiny 2 will be occupied by kinetic, energy, and power weapons respectively. Kinetic guns will function similarly to primaries; they will be used the most and will help with most standard encounters. Energy weapons will function similarly to special weapons; they will be used to help the player get out of tough situations. Power weapons will function similarly to heavy weapons; they will be used to turn the tide of battle in the player's favor.

Subclasses

All classes in Destiny 2 will each get another exclusive subclass. Warlocks get access to the Dawnblade, which allows them to wield a sword of fire which enables them to send of waves of flames at enemies. Titans get access to the Sentinel, which allows them to wield a shield that they can use to block damage and as either a blunt melee weapon or ranged throwing weapon. Hunters get access to the Arcstrider, which allows them to wield a spear of electricity that they can use to quickly slash everything on their path.

Development

Work began on the game in November 2014, just after the release of the original game.[13] The game was reportedly rebooted in May of 2016.[14]

A worldwide reveal was released on March 30.[8][9]

The game's beta will run in the summer of 2017.[4]
