The Sunken Pyramid is a Pyramid of the Black Fleet formerly commanded by Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness. It was moved to Savathûn's Throne World by Rhulk at the request of the Witness so that Rhulk could keep watch over the Witch Queen and provide assistance in the form of an inexhaustible supply of Worm larvae. Upon Savathûn's rebirth in the Light, the Pyramid was neutralized and sank into the swamp below, with a Light curse subsequently placed upon it to trap Rhulk inside. It is the setting of the Vow of the Disciple Raid and Sundered Doctrine Dungeon.

Overview and layout

From the outside, the Sunken Pyramid's hull appears cracked and fractured, likely a result of the damage inflicted by Savathûn after she was reborn in the Light. The interior contains vast cavernous spaces, similarly to the Europan Pyramid, throughout which can be found strange, vaguely humanoid or equine statues carved out of mineral-like substances, along with massive structures in semblance of a city.

The Pyramid's interior contains many artifacts and trophies collected by Rhulk during his time as a Disciple, including a rib taken from the Leviathan of Fundament prominently displayed at the center of one open-air platform. Calcified and dissected Worm larvae can also be found throughout the ship, encased within blocks of a resin-like substance and often separated into segments. Some of these larvae can also be seen fused into calcified Scorn. Some parts of the Pyramid are also decorated with colorful murals, some of which seem to chronicle the history of its former owner Rhulk, as well as others which depict the Hive, the Witness, the Guardians and even the Traveler. All of this makes the Pyramid's interior disturbingly resemble a twisted sort of art gallery or natural history museum. The monstrous creature known as the Caretaker tended Rhulk's collection prior to its defeat by a Guardian Raid fireteam.

History

As with the other Pyramids, the Pyramid that would eventually become known as the Sunken Pyramid was presumably created by the Witness' Precursors, and became part of the Witness' Black Fleet when it left its home system in pursuit of the Traveler. Later, it was gifted to Rhulk, the first of the Witness' Disciples. Some time later, Rhulk visited the gas giant Fundament and dove into its ocean in pursuit of the imprisoned Worm Gods. After making a bargain with the Worms and securing their fealty to the Witness, he took their mother Xita, the Nurturing Worm aboard his Pyramid, where she remained ever after in servitude to Rhulk, who used her as a source of power for his super weapon, the Upended.

After being tasked with watching over Savathûn, Rhulk took his Pyramid into her Throne World, where it would remain for countless millennia as he kept tabs on the Witch-Queen's activities and oversaw the production of Worm larvae for Savathûn's Hive. [1]

After Savathûn died and was reborn in the Light, Rhulk attempted to destroy the Witch-Queen and her Throne World using the Upended, but Savathûn managed to thwart his efforts and disable the Pyramid, fracturing its hull and causing it to fall into the swamps below. Savathûn then used the Wellspring within her realm to place a Light curse upon the Pyramid, imprisoning Rhulk inside.[2] After Savathûn was defeated by the Guardian, the Sunken Pyramid was invaded by a Guardian Raid fireteam, who fought through the Scorn defending the Pyramid and defeated the Caretaker and Rhulk. The Scorn continued to infest the Pyramid afterward, necessitating repeated forays into the Pyramid by the Guardians to clear them out.

Following the destruction of the Witness, a group of Dread, led by the Weaver Kerrev ventured into the Sunken Pyramid in search of a power that could reshape them into forms that better suited their desires. Kerrev and eir compatriots traced the power to a vault deep within the Pyramid, but a fireteam of Guardians found and stopped them before they could open it. The Guardians later opened the vault themselves, revealing the source of power contained within: the chisel of Oryx, the Taken King, with which he had carved the Tablets of Ruin.

Trivia

  • The calcified Scorn found within the Pyramid produce the same growling and gurgling sounds as living Scorn when a Guardian draws near them, indicating either an audio glitch or, more disturbingly, that the Scorn within the displays are still alive.
