"(...) Wherever we walk, there is Light, little brother."
— Chelchis to Irrha, apprentice to the Slayer Baron Kiiraskes

Chelchis, Kell of Stone was a Fallen Kell of the House of Stone who lived on Riis in the years leading up to the Whirlwind. She is remembered by modern Fallen for her bravery in standing against the Hive and the Black Fleet during the Whirlwind, holding the attackers at bay so that her people could escape Riis.

Biography[edit]

Golden Age of Riis[edit]

"Members of the House of Stone were the foundation upon which the city's defenses were built, and I thought then—as I still do—that the virtues of that House showed in none more nobly than its Kell, Chelchis. She stood twice as tall as I, her limbs as thick as the support beams above us. I could have believed any number of stories about her."
— Irrha writing in his memoir about his first meeting with Chelchis

As Kell of the House of Stone, Chelchis played a major role in organizing the defense of Riis and its cities against inside and outside threats. She was regarded as a living legend by the Slayer apprentice Irrha, who had heard many stories about her.[1]

At some point shortly before the Whirlwind, Chelchis met with Irrha and his mentor Kiiraskes, who had been appointed to dispatch an aggressive predatory animal that was troubling a local Baron of the House of Rain, Haaksis. Upon their return after completing their task, Kiiraskes left Irrha under Chelchis' care while the Slayer Baron left to report their findings. As Chelchis stood watch over Irrha, she eventually began singing quietly to herself; Irrha found her song beautiful, but also sad, and upon being queried by Chelchis he told her so. Chelchis responded that the song was not meant to be sad, but was instead a "song for star-sailors headed out into the dark between worlds". She reassured Irrha that wherever the Eliksni went, so too did the Light.[2]

The Whirlwind[edit]

"Where is the Great Machine? Where is the Great Machine?"
— Chelchis, Kell of Stone

Sometime after Chelchis met with Kiiraskes and Irrha, the Witness and its Black Fleet came to Riis, along with Hive forces led by Oryx, the Taken King. Available records seem to indicate that Chelchis bravely stood against the attackers, even facing up to Oryx himself; however, she appears to have been ultimately overpowered by the Taken King and was either killed or Taken. In her last moments, she called out in search of the Traveler, but found it had already fled Riis and left her and her people behind.[3]

Legacy[edit]

Chelchis' ultimate fate is unknown; her final thoughts as recorded in the Item Description for the Adept version of the Doom of Chelchis Scout Rifle suggest that she may have been Taken by Oryx during the Whirlwind.[4]

Centuries after the Whirlwind, Chelchis is regarded as a legendary hero among the Fallen in the Sol System, who still revere Chelchis in their songs.[5]

Quotes[edit]

  • "Where is the Great Machine? Where is the Great Machine?"
  • "All is silent. Nothing answers me. The hunger comes."[4]
