"Let me tell you of your cosmos. We live in a spatially infinite, isotropic universe 12.1 billion years old. Its metallicity is ideal for life and for the spread of technological civilizations. In time, the distance between all points in the universe will contract to zero, and the cosmos will collapse into a singularity, to be reborn in fire. There will be no end to eternity here."
Mara Sov, addressing the Awoken peoples.

The Distributary is the name used for both the home planet and universe of the Awoken race.

Overview

The universe of the Distributary is a pocket universe, accessible via a gravitational singularity that was created when the Traveler's Light and the Black Fleet's Darkness clashed with one another during the Collapse. The present location of the singularity in the Sol System is unknown; in an exchange with Ikora Rey, Arach Jalaal speculated that following its formation, it could have fallen into the Sun, flown outward into interstellar space along the trajectory of the Yang Liwei, or have been pulled by the gravity of the Sol System's planets to end up at some other unknown location. Jalaal also suggested that the light-warping phenomenon seen in the sky of the Dreaming City could be the Distributary's singularity, which would indicate that the Awoken had found a way to harness it.[1]

The planet of the Distributary was created to be paradisaical, easily capable of supporting human colonists. As such, it is thriving with native life and filled with natural resources. It has two planetary rings in an astronomically impossible configuration and its night sky contains more stars than a galactic core.

In the Distributary's universe, time flows differently, and Awoken society has had thousands upon thousands of years to flourish and build. The centuries in which Humanity suffered the Dark Age saw the exponential growth and abundance of the Awoken in their pocket universe. Only near the end of the Dark Ages were the Awoken able to detect and confirm that they were inside a singularity - identifying this information from bits and pieces of radio transmissions that the singularity ensnared from the solar system.

History

The Distributary's universe was formed as the result of a kugelblitz, a black hole generated from the raw energy of the battle between the Light and Darkness as they fought over the Yang Liwei. The Yang Liwei itself fell into the kugelblitz and was transported into the pocket universe; aboard it, the first person to enter the universe was Mara Sov, followed shortly after by captain Alice Li.

Existence within the newborn Distributary was undefined and malleable. The Yang Liwei and all its passengers and crew were reduced to disembodied potential, capable of being recreated in any form. As the first to enter, and the first to become aware of herself again, Mara had the power to shape the unformed universe according to her will. She chose to do so subtly, tricking Alice (remembering herself as Alis) into believing she had entered first and was responsible for shaping the new reality she found herself in. Alis drew upon memories of her past mission and manifested a habitable planet within a universe of stars, much like the one she came from. However, in making the Distributary similar to its parent universe, Alis bound herself and everyone else aboard the Yang Liwei to similar terms of existence -- exactly as Mara desired. Subsequently, Alis incarnated as an Awoken on this new world, abandoning godlike power and accepting a form almost identical to Human, with all the limitations that entailed. Mara followed Alis shortly after. After witnessing the Yang Liwei, which had appeared buried headfirst in the planet's bedrock, the two of them worked together to call on the rest of the disembodied crew and passengers to be reborn as well, populating the world with 40,891 Awoken.
