"Have you heard the whispers, brothers? Sister? The shadow speaks. All we have to do is listen. Its secrets are a gift. Its gift? Our evolution. The others misunderstand. We are the Weapons of Sorrow – living and free. The hated heroes of this broken age."
— Dredgen Vale

Dredgen Vale, formerly known as Zyre Orsa, is a Hunter who helped found the Shadows of Yor and attempted to utilize the darkness of Thorn without becoming corrupted.

Biography

Alongside Teben Grey, Orsa researched the history of the murderous corrupted Guardian Dredgen Yor. Together, they discovered his original identity as the famed Guardian Rezyl Azzir, a fact which had been hidden by the Vanguard. They came to believe that Yor had sacrificed everything in order to become more capable of fighting the Darkness, but had failed to contain its corruption. Orsa agreed with Teben that they should attempt to follow in his footsteps by crafting their own copies of Thorn, but find a way to fight back the Darkness that had corrupted Yor.[1]

Orsa and Teben succeeded in crafting copies of the Thorn for themselves and others who joined them in their endeavor. Their group came to be known as the Shadows of Yor, and Orsa changed his name to Dredgen Vale. Addressing his fellow Shadows, Vale boasted of having tamed the sickness of Thorn and that it was time to claim their reward, as the shadows now spoke to them. He claimed the shadows would gift them with an evolution into becoming better Guardians, while denouncing those who condemned them and claiming they could become the heroes of a broken age.[2]

While competing in the Crucible, Vale and his fellow Shadows took to wearing intimidating dark armor. Their fellow Crucible competitors were unnerved by them, as well as a change in their personalities.[3] During a Supremacy match on Timekeeper, Vale ignored all the crests dropped by his opponents when he defeated them, and instead focused on killing as many as he could. Other Guardians noticed his behavior and worried about Vale and the rest of the Shadows' mental state.[4]
