Dr. M. Mihaylova was a human cosmonaut and part of the Ares One mission, the first manned spaceflight to Mars. Mihaylova, along with her fellow astronauts Jacob Hardy and Ulysses Qiao, would make first contact with the Traveler, beginning the Golden Age of humanity.[1][2]

Mihaylova was a skilled AI researcher affiliated with the Nicholas & Alexandra University[3]. Before being chosen to serve on the crew of the Ares One mission, she corresponded with the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Exploration regarding their recent publication on the use of AIs in assisting emergency medical workers following a Japanese tsunami; she wrote that she disagreed with the article's thesis that AIs could be used to "make people safe", stating that AIs by their very nature possessed the capacity to surpass and therefore possibly threaten humanity, and that they also would necessarily need to keep secrets from their human handlers in order to serve humanity well[4].
Mihaylova was one of four specialists chosen to crew the manned Ares One mission to intercept the Traveler on Mars[5]; she was notified of her selection by the provost of her university, to whom she responded with indignation at having her work interrupted[6]. She nonetheless went on to fly to Central Command in Florida to join the mission[7].
Mihaylova was responsible for developing the AI to be installed aboard the ship used for the mission, the core elements of which included a precocious, self-evolving subsystem she code-named "R"[8]. 20 days before the mission, Mihaylova expressed concerns in her diary that granting her fellow crewmate Evie Calumet's requests for access to the AI might cause her to report some of R's more eccentric behavior to Jacob Hardy, which Mihaylova feared might result in adverse consequences for the AI[9]. Seventeen days later, Evie met with Mihaylova to discuss evidence she had found of R creating unauthorized personal assessments of the crew and mission; as Mihaylova had feared, Evie proposed to bring the information to Hardy for comment. Mihaylova assured Evie that she would take care of the "problem" within twelve hours[10].
