The Macrocosm is a location within Essence, the command ship of The Witness. It is a planetarium that contains several models of the celestial bodies of the Sol System. The Witness seemingly coordinated its operations from here. After it went inside the Traveler, the area was left in the care of Zo'aurc, Explicator of Planets.
History
After the defeat of Savathûn, the Witch Queen, The Witness would declare its advance on the system from within this room.[1]
After the master of the Black Fleet entered the Traveler with many of its Pyramids, the Macrocosm was left in the care of the Shadow Legion, specifically of commander Zo'aurc, who continued to index the planets. According to Nezarec, Final God of Pain, his accomplishments were meager compared to what the invading Raid Fireteam accomplished in their short time in the Pyramid. The Guardians would confront the Explicator and his troops, and defeat him by using the planets' alignments to weaken him.[2]
Trivia
The following four bullet points refer to the exterior of the building that houses the Macrocosm Encounter.
- Macrocosm is situated left of Cataclysm and acts as a destination for one of the Raid's traversal sections. It is traveled to from Scission and passes through the terraformed Cataclysm.
- Macrocosm can be initially viewed from the Raid's entrance, by peering over the fly-in area or turning right instead of going the usual way to get to Nezarec's Tomb.
- Interestingly, it is possible to see Macrocosm before Cataclysm, perhaps subtly hinting at the connection between the encounter's area and the first viewing of the Witness. This however may just be a coincidence, due to the way the Raid is constructed.
- Macrocosm is the highest physical point in the Raid, with the final rendition of Cataclysm being lifted to a similar height.
