Crota's Presence |
Crota, Son of Oryx, also known as the "God-Knight"[2][3] and the "Hope-Eater", is a god worshiped by the Hive and an ancient or powerful Hive Prince who infamously wielded the Sword of Crota and killed countless Guardians during the City's ill-fated campaign to reclaim the Moon. Crota is the main villain in The Dark Below, where the Hive have awoken Crota to lead their armies against humanity.
Biography
Crota is one of the many gods worshiped by the Hive. Though he is the "youngest" member of this pantheon, he is noted to be the heir to the Osmium Throne, a position of high importance among the Hive.[4] His purpose is to conquer Earth on behalf of his father, Oryx, the ruler of the Hive.[5][6] Crota has a sect devoted to him, who are led in the field by Omnigul,[7] though he himself belongs to the Blood of Oryx sect.
Eriana-3 led five other Guardians in an attempt to kill Crota, but the Hive managed to trap his soul. Crota in this world is invincible; that is because his true form only exists within his own netherworld created by his divine will.[8][2] Only one of the Guardians, Eris Morn, survived to tell the tale. His sect also plays a major role in Crota's revival during The Dark Below, which threatened the whole City with a full-scale Hive invasion. Though the crystal tethering his soul in the Chamber of Night was destroyed, banishing him from this world, Crota himself was not truly destroyed until another team of six Guardians confronted him in the Oversoul Throne, entered from the deepest pit of the Hellmouth.[9]
Crota's demise ultimately caught the attention of his father, Oryx. Enraged by the death of his son, Oryx would bring his Dreadnaught into the Solar system and lead an army of Taken and Hive in revenge against the Guardians. [10]
Gameplay
Crota is only mentioned in the base game, but players are tasked with finding and destroying the Sword of Crota.
The players are tasked with killing Crota's Soul in The Wakening. It is a large crystal that fires powerful blasts at the player and is protected by many Hive, including four Wakers of Crota.
Crota himself is the final boss of the raid Crota's End. Players must defeat Ir Yût, the Deathsinger before Crota will appear; he is a tall hive Knight whose body is skeletal and surrounded with ethereal green energy wielding a massive sword. On top of that, he also posses a projectile attack much like what wizards use. Crota is protected by a shield, and even with his shield down he is invulnerable to attack except with an Ascendant Sword. Crota's mere presence prevents Guardians from healing without the assistance of a Chalice of Light. If any of the players die, Crota will summon his Oversoul, and if not destroyed quickly, it will kill the rest of the fireteam.[9]
