- "The Sky greets you."
Luzaku is a Hive Lightbearer of the Lucent Brood, partnered with the Ghost, Euloch.
Biography
Early Reborn Life
- "This is what your speculating has wrought, Luzaku! You have failed, and now the tides of the universe will erode you into meaningless dust. All that you could have become has slipped through your fumbling fingers! The Guardian will return, flush and hungry from his death. And then? Then, you will be dead. Aiat."
- — Euloch, Luzaku's Ghost
After dying at the hands of a Guardian, Luzaku was resurrected by a Ghost, Euloch, who encouraged her to return the favor by killing the "heretic," and become stronger through the Sword Logic as he had done from murdering her. Arming herself with a Shredder, the newly-risen Lightbearer attacked their killer and managed to eliminate him. Euloch promptly warned them of his Ghost, who quickly managed to resurrect its partner. Luzaku dodged the incoming bullets and returned fire with their weapon until the enemy was once again dead. Seizing the opposing Ghost out of the air, Euloch praised the Lightbearer and told her to crush it to gain power from its destruction. However, Luzaku hesitated to do so and looked to her partner, who became impatient and insisted that she destroy it, stating that her "understanding comes in vanquishing the thing." Despite these words, Luzaku let go of the Ghost and allowed it to escape. Euloch, enraged by the act of mercy, rebuked their partner for their naivety, telling her the Guardian would return and kill her.[1]
Working within the Pale Heart
- "This one is Luzaku. This one is not you enemy."
- — Luzaku after meeting The Guardian
At some point, possibly during the events of the Invasion of Neptune, Luzaku and her brood were given orders to infiltrate the Black Fleet. However, when the Witness opened up the portal to the Pale Heart, Luzaku and her brood were pulled in as the Pyramid ships crossed the Threshold. Upon arriving within the Pale Heart, Luzaku was transformed from an Acolyte into a Wizard and had a moment to herself to think. She thought about the possibilities of change in The Sky. This new train of thought was what would cause Luzaku to eventually break off from her own Brood and be drawn into the depths of the Blooming Deep.[2]
During the events of Operation Ahamkara, the Guardian, Cayde-6, and Crow were exploring each of the Lost Sectors in the Pale Heart in search of uncorrupted fissures of Light so that they could commune with the Traveler. When arriving at the Blooming Deep, the Guardian encountered Luzaku fighting the Taken, who stated that she was not their enemy and urged them to help her fight off the Taken infesting her domain. The Guardian agreed and successfully cleared out the Taken infestation alongside Luzaku. The Guardian's Ghost, still suspicious of her, questioned Luzaku about her intentions, but she reassured the Guardian that she was not a threat and that she would not interfere with the communion. Taking her word, the Guardian called for Cayde and Crow to transmat to their location so they may commune with the Traveler. When the communion was over, Ghost thanked Luzaku for helping them and asked her what she planned to do next. Luzaku said that she would remain within the Blooming Deep to contemplate, plan, and protect it from invaders. She also warned that, although she would not attack the Guardian and their allies, the rest of her brood would still be a threat to them as she couldn't control their actions and decisions. Understanding this, the Guardian would leave Luzaku to protect the lost sector in peace.[3]
Later on, as the Coalition rallied their forces for a final strike against the Witness, Luzaku continued to be an ally to the Guardian and helped them any chance she could. During one particular mission to investigate Taken energy spikes in The Refraction, She would appear to assist the Guardian in fighting against a pair of Tormentors and a horde of Taken.[4] During the final battle against the Witness itself, Luzaku would be a part of a Hive Guardian fireteam alongside a Lightbearer Knight, a Lightbearer Acolyte and even Savathûn, the Witch Queen herself. Together, they would help a team of twelve Guardians fight through the Witness's forces and capture territory zones so that they may progress and confront the Witness.[5]
After the Witness's death, the Guardian could return to the Blooming Deep to help Luzaku clear out the Taken infesting her domain once more. Afterwards, Luzaku would speak with a different ally of the Guardian, including the Guardian's Ghost, Mara Sov, Zavala, Ikora Rey, Empress Caiatl, Mithrax, Micah-10, Crow and his Ghost Glint, and even Savathûn.
Conversations with Allies
This segment is a quick summary of all the different conversations Luzaku can have with each of the Guardian's different allies.
[Conversation With Ghost]: When Ghost asks why Luzaku hasn't joined back up with the rest of the Lucent Brood, she explains that she seeks to follow her own path. Ghost questions if Savathûn is ok with her decision, to which the Hive Lightbearer states that the Witch Queen does not really care. However, Luzaku also found her newfound freedom to be like a prison of her own making. While Luzaku didn't understand this, she hoped that she would in time. Ghost agrees and leaves her to contemplate some more.[6]
[Conversation With Mara Sov]: The Awoken Queen greets Luzaku and refers to her as the "Black Swan" of the Lucent Hive. At first, Luzaku is confused by this. But Mara reassures her that it is just a metaphor. Understanding this, Luzaku then asks Mara how she defines her. Mara explains that she sees Luzaku as a component of something greater--a bomb waiting to be detonated. Luzaku is intrigued by Mara's perspective and thinks that maybe they should contemplate more on this together some other time, To which Mara agrees.[7]
[Coversation With Zavala]: The commander is surprised to find out a Hive Lightbearer turned against Savathûn. Luzaku then corrects him, stating that while she is a friend of the Coalition, she is still loyal to the Lucent Brood, as if it were her family. However, Luzaku states that she wishes to try to change the hearts of the Lucent Hive for the better. Zavala remarks that her goal is a wise one.[8]
[Conversation With Ikora]: The Warlock Vanguard recounts a report that details Luzaku's encounter with the Guardian she spared on Mars. She asks if Luzaku was the same individual from the report, since the report said she was an Acolyte before, but has now taken on a new morph as a Wizard. Luzaku confirms Ikora's suspicions, and explains how she was changed after crossing the Threshold into the Pale Heart and now seeks to find her purpose in the Light. She also invites Ikora to join her in contemplating with her. Ikora declines but states that maybe another time they can.[9]
[Conversation With Empress Caiatl]: Caiatl demands Luzaku to address her as empress and to tell her what Savathûn is planning in the Pale Heart, along with where Xivu Arath was located. Unfortunately, Luzaku doesn't have an answer to both questions but does state how she knows Caiatl's pain, comparing it to how the Witness lied to the Hive and took their homeworld. The Empress denies that Luzaku knows her pain, and expresses her hatred of the Hive towards her due to the Fall of Torobatl. Luzaku tries to tell Caiatl that, the Witness was to blame for Torobatl's destruction, as it used the Hive like a sword. She then offers Caiatl a chance to contemplate with her, so that they could learn from each other's pain. Caiatl however, rejects her harshly.[10]
[Conversation With Crow]: Crow shares with Luzaku that deep down, a part of him had hoped they could be at peace with the Lucent Hive, but never thought it was possible. He also expresses hope that Luzaku would be an example all other Lucent Hive could follow. Luzaku agrees, stating how a single raindrop can start a flood, and that she too wishes for a better future, even for the Hive who still follow the Sword Logic. Crow wishes for Luzaku to be safe, and adds that maybe someday, "The Flood" will come.[11]
[Conversation With Glint]: The two share a greeting first, before Glint then asks why Luzaku's speech pattern refers to herself as, "This one." Luzaku explains that the Light is forever, and lives are not. She believes that every time she's resurrected, she becomes someone new. Intrigued by this new perspective, Glint asks if they can talk again some other time. Luzaku agrees and states that she will be waiting.[12]
[Conversation With Mithrax]: The Light Kell greets her first, but apologizes if his decorum is lacking, as he states that it is difficult for him to trust the Hive. Luzaku understands his suspicions and doesn't judge him, as she speculates that Mithrax had gone through the same thing when the House of Light was first brought into the City. Mithrax confirms her speculation and asks what she is doing within the Traveler. Luzaku tells him that she is contemplating her purpose in the light. Mithrax recounts that this same feeling is something he has heard echoed in other Guardians. Not wanting the opportunity to pass, The Kell of Light then states that he would like it if the two of them discussed more on Luzaku's philosophy together in the future. The Wizard likes this idea and agrees before bidding Mithrax farewell.[13]
[Conversation With Micah-10]: The two Lightbearers immediately state how they both interest each other. Luzaku is intrigued by Micah's reverberating aura, while Micah is interested in Luzaku being a Hive Lightbearer ally. Luzaku then states that her Ghost, Euloch, is drawn to Micah's aura and that he remembers her. Upon hearing her Ghost's name, she remembers Euloch as well, and how quiet, angry, and frustrated he was under her care. Micah states that she isn't surprised he ended up joining the Lucent Brood. Luzaku states that all things change, and in due time, Euloch will change as well. She also expresses that she was glad that Micah was here in the Pale Heart.[14]
[Conversation With Savathûn]: Savathûn states how she is impressed with how Luzaku is living independently from the rest of her brood. At first, Luzaku remains defiant, not wanting to be goaded by the Witch Queen's taunts. However, Savathûn reassures Luzaku that she was not taunting her, rather, she was instead giving her praise. Savathûn states that Luzaku was the first member of the Lucent Brood to understand that the Lucent Brood never needed Savathûn and that the Hive can become more than what they became. She is also impressed by Luzaku for reaching out for her own truth, whether it kills her or not. Luzaku then states that death is a chance for them to grow. However, the Witch Queen then leaves Luzaku off by asking her the question, "What is beyond death, Beyond life?"[15]
