History

During the Reef Wars, it was the site of the Battle of Iris. Following the tragic Raze of Amethyst, Paladin Abra Zire pursued Drevis, Wolf Baroness to Iris, but unbeknownst to Zire, Drevis used Iris' intense brightness as cover to escape. When Zire encountered a Ketch above Iris, she assumed it was Drevis' ship and ordered her squadron to open fire. By the time Zire discovered she had eliminated Parixas, the Howling, one of the claimants to the vacant Kellship of the House of Wolves, instead of Drevis, the cunning Wolf was long gone.

The incident had been staged by another Wolf claimant, Skolas, the Rabid, who ordered his minion Grayor, Wolf Assassin to lure Parixas to Iris at the same time Drevis attacked Amethyst. Although the Awoken had killed a powerful figure in the House of Wolves, the Battle of Iris was regarded as a strategic defeat due to Drevis' escape.

Trivia

Iris was named after the rainbow goddess Iris in Greek mythology, who was a messenger to the gods, especially Hera. Her quality of attendant of Hera was particularly appropriate to the circumstances of discovery, as she was spotted following 3 Juno by less than an hour of right ascension (Juno is the Roman equivalent of Hera).
