The Upheaval on Nessus is an on-going conflict between the Guardians of the Vanguard lead by Osiris, Saint-14, and Ikora Rey and aided by Failsafe against the forces of Maya Sundaresh, a former Ishtar Collective scientist turned megalomaniac having came in possession of a paracausal Echo that gave her command over an entire Vex collective. Following the destruction of the Witness, Guardians began investigating the strange Vex terraforming Nessus in response to a paracausal Echo having impacted the planetoid as a byproduct released from the Traveler. Maya, who became the Conductor after retrieving the Echo from the Vex Network and constructed an Exo body, began introducing individuality among the Vex on Nessus and converted the planetoid's radiolaria to be spread across the Sol System for her own selfish goal of recreating her vision of the Golden Age, alongside reuniting with the idealized version of her wife Chioma Esi in the Vex Network.

Other third parties also take part of the conflict such as the Shadow Legion and Dread under Yirix, Fallen forces including House of Dusk lead by Baron Kalliks and House of Salvation under Pykis, and leaderless Taken; all drawn to the Echo of Command in possession of the Conductor.
