The Great Ahamkara Hunt, otherwise known as the Great Hunt, was a massive hunt by the Guardians of the Last City to exterminate the Ahamkara. Mysterious creatures rumored to have been brought into existence by the Traveler during the Golden Age, the Ahamkara were frequently sought out by Guardians for their wish-granting powers. These wishes would always backfire, however, and cause far more harm than good. As valuable as the Ahamkara were, ultimately the Vanguard deemed them too dangerous to be allowed to live. In addition, the Ahamkara had begun to do something to Venus, no two Guardians could agree upon what they saw, and a Warlock that had witnessed the event became suicidal.[1] The Vanguard warned Mara Sov of the Ahamkara as well, and asked her to exterminate any Ahamkara that ventured into the Reef. Mara Sov, seeing an advantage in having the only Ahamkara alive, delivered weapons to the Guardians to assist them in their hunt. By the end of the Great Hunt, Riven, Taranis, and their whims became the last living Ahamkara within the Sol System, and then became physically separated forever.

Officially, the Hunt was mostly successful and the vast majority of the Ahamkara species was rendered extinct. However without anyone's knowledge the Nine hid a small number of Ahamkara, who were however killed by them with the arrival of Oryx in the Sol system, for fear that it would corrupt them.[2] Ahamkara bones are used in some Warlock and Hunter armor.[3]

Notable Guardians that were involved in the Great Hunt included Wei Ning[4], Commander Zavala, Eris Morn, Ikora Rey, Lord Shaxx, Praedyth, Kabr, Pahanin[5], Lord Saladin, Lady Efrideet, Liu Feng, and Ouros[6].

Events

For most events the chronological order is unclear, so the events listed may not be in exact chronological order.

Preparation

Eris Morn would send a message to Queen Mara Sov, detailing a recent disturbance in which an Ahamkara transformed into a mysterious anomaly, causing Guardians who looked upon it to go mad. She alerted Mara that the Vanguard had ordered an extermination of the Ahamkara out of fear of their powers, as well as the fact that they began re-writing Venus. Eris warned Mara that if she cares for her people, to kill any Ahamkara who escape to the Reef.[7]

Queen Mara Sov agreed to assist so Riven would be the last Ahamkara, and a secret weapon. She provided weaponry secretly made by Ahamkara and built secret gateways to protect the Dreaming City, should Guardians invade searching for Ahamkara.[8]

At the Tower, Guardians were assigned partners for the Hunt, however many chose to go with their Fireteams.[9]

The Hunt

As Reef preparation were underway, Riven warned Taranis not to return to the Dreaming City.[10]

Riven would create weapons for Guardians to use in the Hunt, under the agreement that they would be returned when the Hunt was finished. Illyn delivered a shipment to Joxer under the premise they were from the Queen, but Joxer suspected they were from someone else.[11]

Madadh would be slain on Venus.[12]

Sjur Eido would prepare for her hunt by bringing her bow and a fractal knife from the Queen's armory. In the Dreaming City, Huginn and Muninn sensed she had arrived to kill them. Speaking with them, Sjur asked for a fight to remember, so she won't forget about them. In the end, Sjur proved victorious, and it was most likely her who placed their skulls in the Harbinger's Seclude to honor them.[13] She would later slay Eao for sharing secrets of the Awoken with Warlocks.

Taeko-3 and Gallida Tuyet hunted down an Ahamkara on Venus. Gallida wished for the Ahamkara to take the form of a Vex construct, allowing her to draw diagrams of the inner workings, while Taeko-3 waited. When Gallida finished, Taeko-3 attacked the Ahamkara.[9]

Praedyth, Kabr, and Pahanin fought six Ahamkara on Mars. They played classic Old Earth songs as they wished for abilities to make the fight more dramatic. Kabr became a towering giant, while Pahanin became overcharged with Void and obliterated any Ahamkara he pointed at. Whenever the Ahamkara were killed, Praedyth would wish for the fight to begin again.[5]

Himura Shinobu and Nadiya partnered together to hunt down an Ahamkara. Shinobu wished to learn about her past, so the Ahamkara took the form of her mother and told her stories from her past. Eventually Shinobu asked Nadiya to kill the dragon, and she fired repeatedly.[14]

Liu Feng and Ouros would get caught in an Ahamkara illusion, with two Ahamkara taking the appearance of them. Liu Feng and Ouros successfully figured out who were the Ahamkara based on the fact that they could feel the warmth of the Sunbreakers Forge.[15]

Lady Efrideet and Lord Saladin would fight an Ahamkara who took the form of an actual dragon when Saladin wished it.[16]

Caliban-8 would wind up dealing cards to Tallulah Fairwind and and Ahamkara in the form of an elderly man. Tallulah eventually gambled her life and lost, and subsequently killed by the Ahamkara leaving the position of Hunter Vanguard to Caliban-8.[17]

Wei Ning and Eris Morn hunted an Ahamkara in an unknown location. Eris surprised the Ahamkara and used Arc energy to blind the it, while Wei Ning sliced it's belly, ending it's life. While Wei Ning left to join another fray, Eris recovered a sliver of it's rib causing her to hear whispers.[18]

The pair would later fight an Ahamkara for a day on Venus. Wei Ning would reveal to Eris that she had wished for the fight to never end. Eventually, six more Ahamkara appeared and Eris cast her Arc Blade to destroy them. Afterwards, both Eris and Wei Ning herd whispers from the dead Ahamkara.[19]

Lord Timur and Lord Colovance would hunt an unknown Ahamkara on Earth. Lord Timur went ahead to face the Ahamkara alone. Despite successfully landing a killing blow on the Ahamkara, it continued to taunt him about Clovis Bray until it died.[20]

Ikora Rey would fight Madhir, and wish to be someone he could not tempt. This permanently altered her personality, but she prevailed against him.[21]

Eris and Ikora Rey would defeat an army of an Ahamkara. The dragons showed the Guardians glimpses of their lives before they were resurrected. Eris channelled her Light north, while Ikora channelled it south, and together they destroyed the remains.[22]

Rook and Von Dueven hunted an Ahamkara in House of Winter territory, most likely on Venus. When they approached the Ahamkara, it stood still as a statue. Rook began to ask if this was normal behaviour, but Von Dueven quickly shot the dragon, before decapitating it. As the skin disintegrated leaving only bones, Rook and Von Dueven agreed to bring the bones to the Warlocks in the Last City. Van Dueven wound up keeping some of the Ahamkara's teeth for himself.[23]

The Psion Voyc was rumoured to have slain an Ahamkara using Leviathan's Breath. Calus was thrilled, and promoted her to Shadow of the Wilds.[24]

Lord Shaxx slew the Ahamkara Hefnd after Shaxx himself was killed fourteen times. After Hefnd's death, Shaxx began to feel remorse for Ahamkara and does not their fault ill-conceived wishes backfired.[25]

A year into the Great Hunt on Venus, Zavala, Eris, and Lord Shaxx killed an Ahamkara. Eris and Zavala questioned Shaxx's remorse towards the dragon. Afterwards, Shaxx made an unknown wish causing the dragon to explode, coving Shaxx in a green fire while the Guardians quietly listened to its disembodied voice.[26]
