"The Devils take whatever nature has yet to claim."
Master Rahool[1]

The House of Devils are a Fallen House, distinguishable by their red cloaks.[2] They were for the longest time the City's most pervasive foe, surpassing the Hive, until the Cabal Red Legion invasion.

Later, former Devils joined their former Baroness to form the House of Salvation, in hopes of destroying the Traveler for abandoning their people.[3][4]

History

Early History

The House of Devils is a noble House of Eliksni who originated from the homeworld of Riis. They were once a peaceful House who experienced a time of prosperity when their society was graced by the Traveler, who they worshipped as the "Great Machine". The various noble Houses controlled multiple star systems and coordinated themselves into societal roles such as builders, caretakers, physicians, negotiators, weavers and warriors.[5][6] While the role of the Devils is unknown, their counterparts the House of Wolves were described as being gentle weavers.[7]

Tensions and infighting grew among the Houses and they clashed in a distant event known as the Edge Wars which was ended by the House of Kings and House of Judgement to usher a new Golden Age. However their prosperity changed with the arrival of the Darkness which destroyed their society in a cataclysmic event known as the Whirlwind.[8] In the wake of the massive extinction, the Great Machine fled their homeworld and Eramis, the Shipstealer was among the few Eliksni to witness it flee and helplessly watched the pain and suffering it caused to her people as after being woken up from her slumber by her partner, Athrys.[9][10]

The Devils were forced to abandon their homeworld along with other noble Houses and for centuries they travelled the vast expanse of space as they chased the Traveler in search of salvation and with the hope of returning to their former glory.[11][12] During the Long Drift, they raised many generations of hatchlings in their Ketches, most notably Atraks.[13] This new generation of Eliksni was deemed unlucky as they never witnessed the glory of their homeworld and brought up on the stories and warsongs that celebrated their lost culture.[14]

Eventually the Devils experienced reform as the various Kells from different Houses neglected their old customs and established a new social hierarchy among the Eliksni such as docking and the veneration of Servitors.[15][16] Archons became the caretakers of Servitors and looked upon to provide hope to the depressed Eliksni through their words and interpretations of their new machine gods.[11] Kridis, a prominent Devil-born, clung on to the belief that they were meant for a higher purpose and meant to evolve beyond their current forms. All the while she endured a life of subsistence alongside her fellow Eliksni who received succor of Ether from their Prime Servitor.[17]

Twilight Gap

The Cosmodrome Devils

Devils' Prime Servitor, Sepiks Prime

"Sepiks Prime cast a great shadow over our City. With its destruction, the Fallen Devils will grow weaker. But we must stay vigilant. The Fallen are crafty. They'll find ways to survive. They always do."
Commander Zavala

Following the death of Solkis, Kell of Devils, the House of Devils established a stronghold within the Cosmodrome of Russia. Absent of their Kell and political leader, the Devils' Prime Servitor, Sepiks, gained prominence within the House and ruled the Devils alongside Riksis, Devil Archon; who served it as a caretaker and arbiter of its will.[18] The lack of political leadership also allowed Craask, Kell of Kings to exert his influence among the techno-worshiping leadership of the Devils and rule them from the shadows.[19]

At some point, Sepiks's authority was challenged when a group of revered scientists, the Devil Splicers, splintered away from their House as they sought freedom from subsistence on Ether and evolution by augmenting themselves with technology.[20] Among them was the former disgraced Archon Priest, Aksis who led the Splicers.[21]

The majority of the Devils took residence near an old colony ship, named the Devil's Spire, and established The Devils' Lair as a mecca for the zealous worshippers to offer tribute to their machine god in the form of skulls from dead Guardians.[18][22] Like many other Servitors, Sepiks Prime was born in the image of the Traveler and the Devils went to great lengths to protect their main source of life sustaining Ether.[23][24] The Prime Servitor also spawned its own line of Sepiks High Servitors, most notably Sepiks-23.

Fall of the Archon

The Devil's Archon, Riksis

"Taking down an Archon is no easy task. With the master of the Fallen servitors gone, the House of Devils will scramble to protect their Prime Servitor."
Commander Zavala.[25]

Their dominance was uncontested for years until a newly risen Guardian was sighted attempting to escape the Fallen's territory. The Devils alerted their presence to Riksis after they had killed Rahn, Devil Captain and stole a Jumpship meant for scrap in Dock 13. The young Guardian quickly escapes the Cosmodrome and the Archon's reach just as his troops fire their Wire Rifles at them and miss.[26] Later, Riksis acquired the NLS Drive to bait the Guardian's return and engages them in battle as they try to secure it. He summons reinforcements to ambush the Guardian and shoots them with his Shrapnel Launcher, but is killed in the end.[27]

The death of the Archon was celebrated by the Last City and the Devils quickly heightened their security for Sepiks as the absence of an Archon left it vulnerable.[27]

Fall of Sepiks Prime

For years the whereabouts of Sepiks remained elusive, but rumors hinted its presence within the Cosmodrome. The Devils dominance was uncontested for centuries until a newly risen Guardian slew their Archon, Riksis. This was celebrated as the first major victory against the Devils since Battle of Twilight Gap and Sepiks would become vulnerable, causing the Devils to heightened their security for Sepiks.[28][29] Rallying their Fallen nobility such as Naksis, Devil Baron and deployed a Devil Walker to deter anyone from attacking Sepiks.

The Vanguard Commander Zavala located the Servitor's position beneath a colony ship and coordinated a Strike against Sepiks.[30] Upon arrival, the Guardians entered a crossfire between the Hive and crews of Devils protecting the entrance to their lair, they then disable the Devils' security mesh layers and disposed their Baron and Walker to reach the Devils' Lair.

As they entered into the lair, the team would discover Sepiks being protected by a personal immunity shield along with its worshippers within its domain, after taking out the Fallen within the site, the Prime would deactivate its shield to personally attack the Fireteam, resulting a battle between the Guardians and Sepiks. During the fight, Sepiks would continuously blasts them with its Servitor Eye and summoned more reinforcements to help it fend off the Guardians, as well as teleports around the lair to evade gunfire. But despite its tactical abilities, Sepiks would destroyed by the Guardians, which would cripple the Devils' leadership and ends the biggest threat to the Last City.

In the aftermath, the Devils attempted to replace Riksis with a Rising Archon named Karrhis in hopes of reviving Sepiks, but was also slain.

The Wolf Rebellion

"The Silent Fang are assassins, killers. Real charmers. During the war, they went after our commanders. They’ll do the same to the House of Devils."
Petra Venj

During the Wolf Rebellion, the House of Wolves were led by Skolas, Kell of Kells. The Silent Fang were dispatched by the Wolf Kell to assassinate the weakened Devil leadership to take control of the House.[31] A Guardian, guided by Variks, the Loyal of the House of Judgment, stopped the attempted assassination and defeated the Silent Fang, saving the Devils.[32]

Also during the Wolf Wars, Devils Baroness Eramis, Kell of Darkness would be captured and imprisoned into the Prison of Elders.

The Taken War

S.A.B.E.R.-2 attempting to control Rasputin

"If the Devils ever gain control of Rasputin’s Warsats, we'd have Golden Age ordnance pointed at the Tower in minutes."
— Grimoire description

During The Taken War the Devils were displaced by the Taken invasion of Earth, with their former Lair becoming overrun and many Devils being Taken.[33] During this time, the Devils attacked the Warmind Rasputin's bunker, attempting to take control of the Warmind and it's weapons. Rasputin sent out a distress signal, causing a fireteam of Guardians to come to the Warminds aid. The guardians followed the Devils inside, and fought against S.A.B.E.R.-2, a massive Shank re-purposed by "rising Devils Archons" to crack into Rasputin's core. S.A.B.E.R.-2 was destroyed, and the Devils were forced to retreat.[34]

SIVA Crisis

"Long have we wandered in the blind prison of flesh. Those old lives now a memory, transposed by another. The gift brings pain, yes, but godhood must come at a price."
Aksis, Archon Prime.[35]
The Ascension of the Devil Splicers

Under the leadership of a new Archon, Aksis, the Devils' attempts to find Golden Age technology bore fruit in the form of SIVA deep in a quarantined area of the Cosmodrome called The Plaguelands. A subsect of the House, the Devil Splicers, infused themselves with SIVA making themselves stronger, with Aksis himself converting completely into a machine.[36] This caused a rift in the House, as the techno-religious nature of the Fallen was unsure on how to react to the promises of SIVA.[37] In an effort to placate the opposition, the Splicer sect used SIVA to resurrect Sepiks Prime as Sepiks Perfected, giving the rest of the House their Prime back, and giving them a measure of control.[38]

The Devils, along with Sepiks, attacked the Iron Temple, attempting to steal information about SIVA to further their understanding of it. They were stopped by a Guardian and Lord Saladin, the last Iron Lord.[39] The Guardian ventured deep into Splicer territory to the SIVA replication chamber called Site 6, destroying the source of the SIVA and cutting off the Splicers from their SIVA supply.[40] Afterwards, Sepiks Perfected was tracked back to it's former lair, and was hunted down by a fireteam of Guardians. Sepiks was cornered unable to escape like it did at the Iron Temple, and was destroyed once more.[38] A fireteam of Guardians was dispatched to stop a Splicer priest named Kovik who was experimenting on the Hive along with SIVA. The Guardians descended into his lair and killed Kovik, along with a Hive Ogre he was vivisecting.[41] Afterward, another fireteam stopped a Splicer attempt to keep Kovik's experiments alive by invading the Hellmouth and capturing more Ogres to experiment on.[42]

With the Splicers backed into a corner, a larger fireteam attacked the Splicers lair directly. There they encountered Vosik, the Archpriest, second in command of the Splicer sect. They hunted him deep into the wall the Splicers had dug into and destroyed him. The guardians continued to explore the Splicer lair and discovered the Devils had found a facility not unlike Site-6 and found Aksis, the Archon Prime of the Devils. Using SIVA against him, they managed to destroy Aksis, once again rendering the Devils leaderless.[43] But with the Archon Prime's death, the Devil Splicers would try to find new leadership, under the form of Taniks, the Scarred, by allying with the deceased mercenary's crew to resurrect Taniks, with SIVA; although his mind was clouded by SIVA, his ruthlessness and leadership remained, helping the Splicers with their leadership vacuum. But Variks, The Loyal would uncover Taniks' rebirth and gave the coordinates to the Vanguard, leading to the demise of "Taniks Perfected", leaving the Devil Splicers broken once. [44]

Following their crushing defeat at the hands of the Guardians once more, the Devils committed one last act against the City that would become the last time the Devils ever assualted the Walls until Zero Hour. Iliksis, Light Stalker, a large Captain of the House of Devils, amassed a large Devil group to assualt bannerfall in the hopes of breaching the City's wall once again. The group's two bombs would be defused, its fallen killed, and its leader vanquished by the Guardian - thus ending the Devil's raids and even further weakening the house. In the aftermath of the SIVA Crisis, all Fallen pulled out of the Cosmodrome.[45]

Withdrawal and Unification

Ex-Baroness, Eramis

Eventually the Fallen House of Devils withdrew completely from the Cosmodrome, leaving behind piles of ceremonially burnt banners and armor. The other Fallen Houses—Winter, Exile, Wolves—appeared to have done the same and withdrew en masse everywhere, abandoning their former territories. Out of sheer desperation, the majority of the Fallen eventually united under a new banner of the House of Dusk.

After the Scorn's massive breakout at the Prison of Elders, former Devil Baroness Eramis, the Shipstealer escaped and was actively rallying the remaining Fallen traditionalists into reforming the House of Devils.[46] After seven months, Eramis gathered a force large enough to attempt a heist on the City to steal an old SIVA-infused weapon stored in the Cryptarch vaults of the Old Tower, possibly for the remnants of SIVA within. The Devils manage to grab the weapon, but were intercepted and killed by Mithrax, the Forsaken and the Guardian before they could escape.

Following the failure to capture SIVA, Eramis abandoned the Devils banner and built a new unified empire from the old Fallen houses on Europa. After being shunned by the Traveler and excluded from its Light, Eramis decided to embrace the Darkness by proclaiming herself as “Kell of Darkness”.[47][48]

Structure

Archon Prime, Aksis

The House of Devils have undergone dramatic changes in leadership over the years they have spent in the Sol System. After the death of Solkis at the hands of Saint-14, the Devils did not gain a new Kell in over one hundred years, with Riksis and Sepiks acting as their sole leadership.[49][50] Why they did not replace him is unknown, but the Devils being a more religiously driven House compared to the others may have allowed the religious leadership to keep the House together.[37][38] The death of Riksis and destruction of Sepiks Prime did not break the House, showing a level of uniformity that other Houses do not display.[51]
