Oryx, the Taken King

Oryx is a mysterious Hive entity that is believed to be the master of all Hive sects and the source of their powers. He is even the creator of the dreaded Crota, the Hive God who slayed thousands of Guardians. While the nature of this entity is unknown to the Guardians, the name Oryx appears often enough in Hive rituals that it cannot be ignored. Shrines dedicated to Oryx have been built throughout the Solar System, and are known to be used by the Hive to communicate with some dark power across the universe. Osiris studied the Hive extensively and foretold that the Spawn of Crota would pave the way for Oryx's coming by "snuffing out the worlds of Light". The Hive sect known as the Blood of Oryx are thought to be the direct servants of Oryx itself.[1]
Trivia
The description of Oryx's coming is reminiscent of the Darkness's arrival in the Solar system.[2] This could imply some sort of connection.
