The Ahamkara are a species that appeared in the Solar System when the Traveler arrived.[1]
Overview
The Ahamkara were said to be wish-fulfilling "dragons", sought out by many Guardians in search of power. However, it was decided that the bargains made with these creatures came at too high a price, so they were hunted to extinction during the Great Ahamkara Hunt.[1][2] Based on their remains, the Ahamkara were avian or draconic in appearance, possessing scales and sharp beaks.
However, the Ahamkara were not fully dead, as Guardians have reported strange hallucinations connected to their Ahamkara gear.[3] Additionally, some have been rumoured to have been spotted as far as Jupiter.[4]
Gameplay
The fossilized remains of the Ahamkara are of continued interest to Warlocks, who adorn their armor with them and thereby acquire unique powers. Some Hunters and certain Titans also wear armor with Ahamkara bones, but have less of an understanding of the risks involved. The bones seem to retain a will of their own, flattering and urging their owners to recklessness.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Trivia
- The name "Ahamkara" comes from the Sanskrit term for attachment to one's ego.
- Some players believed that the winged, flying creatures seen in the skies above Venus may have been living Ahamkara. According to Bungie, these creatures are "batadactyls". They got their informal name during an argument between members of Bungie's environment team over what animal the creatures most resembled.[12] This lead to the misconception that the Ahamkara were predominately found on Venus.
- Both the armor descriptions and the Grimoire cards end with the same phrase, "oh bearer/reader mine." This speech pattern bears some similarity to that of the Worm Gods referenced in the Books of Sorrow, suggesting some sort of connection between the two groups of entities. Additionally, the description of the Harmony as dragons and their usage of "dragon-wishes" may mean the Harmony were related taxonomically in some way to the Ahamkara, who appeared when the Traveler arrived. The Ahamkara's presence in relation to the Traveler strengthens the possibility.
