Darkness in the Light is an Exotic Quest that was introduced in Forsaken and rewarded players with the Malfeasance Exotic Hand Cannon. Players could start this quest by acquiring the Seething Heart, which was only obtainable by killing the Ascendant Primeval Servitor boss in Gambit (this has since been changed during The Witch Queen to now requiring the player's first Primeval kill). The chances of this boss spawning are randomized, which forces players to play through matches of Gambit until the Servitor shows up and defeating it to win the match, unlocking the first quest step.
Steps
1. The Seething Heart
Speak to the Drifter at the Tower.
Transcript
You've defeated a particularly powerful Primeval in Gambit and taken its heart. Drifter might find it valuable. Take it to him.
- The Drifter: What. Is. This? The heart of an Ascendant Primeval. I'll take that, thank you very much. We'll use it later. While I have you here… Get this: a while back this punk stole something… important to me. Thing is, he's like us - ever-living till you get his Ghost. But seeing as I ain't laid eyes on him in something like forever, guessing his Ghost probably got… got. So do me a favor and, uh, go see if that punk has what's mine, huh? I'd do it myself, but as you can see, I'm a busy man. Besides, you're the closest thing to reliable I've met in a century.
2. City of Secrets
Search for clues about the thief in the Dreaming City.
Defeat 25 Taken bosses or minibosses in the Dreaming City. The Blind Well is a great opportunity to fill this quest step as it spawns several Taken bosses in the ending phases.
3. The Corrupted
Help the Drifter track the thief who stole from him. Complete the mission variant of strike "The Corrupted".
The Drifter sends you to investigate the whereabouts of Callum Sol in a special version of "The Corrupted" strike. Upon reaching his last location at the Ascendant Realm and killing Yächaar, Bound to Sedia, it is revealed in a leftover recording that Shin Malphur have killed Callum with his Golden Gun without any ulterior motive. Having only the depleted weapon core and Callum's broken ghost shell at his grave, Drifter instructs the Guardian to collect the stolen weapon core while he thinks up an explanation.
4. Depleted Weapon Core
Deliver the depleted weapon core you found at Callum's grave to the Drifter.
Transcript
You found a component part of some kind of weapon at Callum's grave. It must be what he stole from Drifter. He'd probably like it back.
- The Drifter: The man with the Golden Gun killed Callum. Every one o' those Hunter types has got a Golden Gun, but that man fights like it's HIS. He's been after me and my crew a long time. Pretty sure I'm the only one left… Anyway, I gotta thank you. Not a lotta people I like. Even less I can trust. Just don't ever tell anyone what you saw today. You cross me and, well… let's just say it wasn't an accident that man found Callum. Let's get you back to action. There's plenty o' Gambit in front o' you.
5. Business as Usual
Deposit Motes. Dropped Motes subtract x2 score. Win Gambit matches.
- Collect 400 Mote of Dark. Losing motes subtracts twice the amount of motes you lose.
- Win 10 matches in Gambit.
6. Lights Out
Have an ally invader defeat four opposing Guardians in a single invasion three times, OR defeat four opposing Guardians as an invader. As an invader, defeat 25 opposing Guardians in Gambit.
7. Dark Weapon Core
Speak to the Drifter at the Tower.
After successfully infusing Taken energy into the weapon core from your matches in Gambit, the Drifter presents to you with the Malfeasance as your reward for your partnership and completion of the quest.
Transcript
You've been at Gambit for a while now. You've met the enemies of Humanity head-on and made them pay. The Drifter has rewarded you handsomely for the Motes of Dark you've collected. Now its time to see the culmination of your partnership with the Drifter.
- The Drifter: I finally have an answer for the Man with the Golden Gun. And it's something you and me built together. What do you say we call it Malfeasance? Sure, I shot bigger guns. But this thing is weaponized heat death… pure atrophy. And it's the key to my freedom from HIM. Fact is, you don't outdraw that Gunslinger. No one can. But my entire crew - armed with THIS? We don't have to outdraw him. We just have to get our shots in. He dies, too. And make no mistake. You're part of my crew now.
