The Solar System as depicted in the Director

The Solar System (also called the Sol system or simply Sol) is the planetary system inhabited by humanity. During the Golden Age, humanity forged an empire that spanned much of the system, but the catastrophic effects of the Collapse forced humans to retreat to Earth, abandoning their many worlds to various other forces.

The planets and the Sun of the Solar System are each associated with one of the dark-matter based intelligences that collectively make up the Nine.

The system is currently inhabited by both the Traveler and the Darkness, the latter of which is in the midst of sieging the system.

Notable celestial bodies

  • The Sun—the system's native star and an implied member of the Nine.
  • Mercury—a former garden world, now converted by the Vex into a planet-sized machine. Member of the Nine.[1]
  • Venus—a volcanic jungle world and the site of the Ishtar Academy, humanity's greatest center of learning. Now occupied by the Vex and the Fallen House of Winter. Member of the Nine.[2]
  • Earth—mankind's homeworld. The only safe human settlement is The Last City, with pockets of hidden human communities. Active enemies of humanity including Fallen, Hive, Cabal, and Taken occupy the rest of the planet including Old Russia and the European Dead Zone. Member of the Nine.[3]
    • The Moon—Earth's only natural satellite. Once the site of a small colony for supplying the rest of the system, now the location of the Hive's stronghold, with a minor Fallen presence.[4]
  • Mars—the first human city outside of Earth, Freehold, was founded here. Now occupied by the Cabal, who are fighting invading Vex forces for control. Member of the Nine Also home of BrayTech Futurescape and the Warmind Rasputin, while Hive occupy the polar caps of Hellas Basin.[5]
    • Phobos—one of Mars's two moons. Phobos was controlled by the Cabal until the Taken invaded and destroyed the Cabal outpost.[6]
  • Asteroid Belt—a ring of asteroids and Golden Age debris marking the boundary between the Inner System and the Outer System.[7]
  • Jupiter—a gas giant. Its moons are believed to have been a major cornerstone of Golden Age civilization; now controlled by the Nine. Member of the Nine.[10]
    • Ganymede—the largest moon in the Solar System, occupied by Vex and their ruins.
    • Io—a volcanic, sulfuric moon occupied by the Cabal and Vex. Vex ruins lie all across the planet, and the Taken are highly active.
    • Europa—a moon of Jupiter and former human colony, under the control of the Nine.
  • Saturn—a gas giant. Oryx's Dreadnaught and a Hive fleet now orbit the planet. Member of the Nine.[11]
    • Hyperion—a moon of Saturn, mentioned to have traded with Titan, and was home to some Ishtar scientists.
    • Rhea—a moon of Saturn, mentioned to be under control of the Nine.
    • Telesto—a moon notable for attracting Harbinger matter after the Battle of Saturn.
    • Titan—a methane ocean moon and littered with the ruins of Golden Age cities built above the sea level. The Hive and the Fallen lurk around the moon.
  • Nessus—a dormant Vex Machine World that is also under Red Legion occupation. Emperor Calus's world-consuming Leviathan looms over the planetoid.
  • Uranus—seventh planet from the sun, member of the Nine. Taken by the Darkness.
  • Neptune—eighth planet from the sun, member of the Nine. Taken by the Darkness.
  • Pluto—a dwarf planet on the edge of the system. Taken by the Darkness. (possible member of the Nine if the sun is not)
