- "Help Failsafe find two long lost members of her crew"
- — In game description
Lost Crew is an Adventure on Nessus. It is unlocked in tandem with all Adventures on Nessus after completion of the mission Six.
During the course of Lost Crew the player is tasked with finding out what happened to two members of the Exodus Black crew who left it in anger long ago after an argument with Captain Jacobson. The player then proceeds through several challenges orchestrated by the Vex as part of a series of behavioural tests being conducted on Guardians, captive Fallen as told through Release, and on the members of the Exodus Black crew. The "tests" ultimately lead the player into the Chamber of Stone where they defeat a Vex Warden guarding the remains of the now dead crew where they rest besides a mysteriously shrunken Vex gate.
Satisfied by the confirmation of her crew's final fate, Failsafe, concludes that no one is truly dead so long as there is someone who still remembers them.

Gameplay
- Start Adventure
Failsafe Cheery: Captain, friendly Ghost? I have been wondering recently, what became of two members of the Exodus Black crew. (Depress): They left on their own, a looong time ago. Never came back.
Ghost: Um. Sure, Failsafe. Where do we start?
Failsafe (Cheery): The local Vex will have the data I need to begin the search.
- Collect Vex Data Chip
- Destroy Vex and take their data cores so failsafe and Ghost can narrow down the location of the missing Exodus crew members
- The player kills some Vex and collects a "Vex Data Core".
Failsafe (Cheery): The Vex noted two humans passing through this region ages ago. Beings from Earth were a rare occurence back then. I've located a Conflux with more information
Ghost: Failsafe... you're not expecting your crew mates to still be alive, are you?
Failsafe (Cheery): No, they are very dead. But I want to know what happened.
Ghost: The missing crew. What were they like?
Failsafe (Cheery): One was a scientist and philosopher. The other, an engineer.
Ghost: If they're out there, we'll find them.
- Hack the Conflux
- Keep the Vex away from the Conflux while Ghost hacks it
- The player approaches the Conflux, located immediately besides and below Ghost Scans NE-TAN-4
- Ghost: "If I'm reading this right, when the Vex first installed them there were over two hundred of these here. But as the conversion process went along, they all got... absorbed."
- Hack Conflux
- Defend the Conflux
- Hack Progress
- [0-100]%
- Destroy the Vex before they can disrupt Ghost's hack on the conflux
- Hack Progress
- The Vex appear and commence battle with the player and are defeated.
- 100%
Failsafe (Cheery): Captain, follow these coordinates. The Vex are testing you, and have created a holographic placard for our convenience. Presumably, my missing crew were forced to partake in a similar experiment.
- Follow the Vex Hologram
- The Vex have deployed a holomarker to signal where the next part of the test will begin
- The player follows the hologram to the center of The Tangle, where Vex platforms have now appeared, hovering over the chasm below. The platforms will spawn and despawn periodically to provide a challenge for players navigating between the three modules located on fixed, non-despawning platforms.
Failsafe (Cheery): The test demands we reach three data modules.
Ghost: This test was meant for humans?
Failsafe (Cheery): The contents have been calibrated to challenge a Guardian, though they don't refer to you by that title.
Ghost: What do they call us?
Failsafe (Cheery): Those who wield that which we cannot simulate.
Ghost: Huh. Catchy.

Ghost: Your missing crew, how did they get separated?
Failsafe (Cheery): They disagreed with Captain Jacobson's decisions, and they... departed. My conflict resolution software was unable to amend the situation. So I gave them what provisions I could, more than the requisite amount. I knew they would be... more vulnerable in the wild. But I could not change their fate.
- Follow the Vex Hologram
- The Vex have deployed a holomarker to signal where the next part of the test will begin
- The player follows the Hologram to a Vex teleport gate leading to Chamber of Stone. The portal is near NE-TAN-5:
- Ghost: "If I'm reading this right there are... other Gardens. Like, Black Garden Gardens. I couldn't tell if they were being built, or were already destroyed. What does it mean?"
- The player follows the Hologram to a Vex teleport gate leading to Chamber of Stone. The portal is near NE-TAN-5:
- The player enters the portal
- Chamber of Stone
- The player enters the cave, to find the Hologram floating in the middle of the room and their progression blocked by a Vex barrier powered by the Vex units that are now spawning in to test the player to death.
- Destroy the Vex
- Eliminate all hostiles
- The player defeats these Vex, opening the path forward.
Ghost: Still no sign of your crew, Failsafe. We'll keep looking.
Failsafe (Cheery): I appreciate your efforts, Captain, Friendly Ghost.
- Follow the Vex Hologram
- The Vex have deployed a holomarker to signal where the next part of the test will begin
- The player follows the hologram into another cave and is confronted by more Vex.
- Destroy the Vex
- Eliminate all hostiles
- The player combats the Vex. After the defeat of the first wave, reinforcements will arrive led by an Ultra class Hydra, a Vex Warden.
- The player defeats the Vex Warden and the last of the Vex.
Ghost: I'm reading a very faint distress signal. It's ancient.
- Search the Chamber
- Search the chamber for Failsafe's missing crew.
- The player searches the cave for the missing crew. This cave also contains NE-CSTN-1
- Ghost: "Ok so this Gate is too small for a Hydra to fit through. But according to this, dozens of Hydras passed through before it broke down. So either the Gate got smaller at some point, or there are hundreds of tiny Hydras out there somewhere."
- The player searches the cave for the missing crew. This cave also contains NE-CSTN-1
- The player finds the crew's dead bodies, one of which is crushed under a fallen rock.
- Scan
Ghost: Um, Failsafe?
Failsafe (Cheery): The bodies are outside my sensor range, but I can detect them through your scan.
Ghost: I'm sorry, Failsafe. I know how I would feel if I... never mind. (Written): Did we help? (Voiced): Were they a good crew?
Failsafe (Cheery): Yes, friendly Ghost. The memory of what happened to them will live forever in me. And so, in a way, they will never die!
{End Gameplay}
{End Mission}
Trivia
- The presence of the Vex Warden, a large Hydra, provides an answer to the question posed in NE-CSTN-1 as to whether the Vex gate shrank or was always so tiny and only used by miniature Hydras. By the Warden's un-miniaturised presence it may be inferred that the gate was once far larger than its present size, raising questions as to what the missing crew members were doing in its vicinity.
- The title of the Hydra boss at the end of this Adventure, "Vex Warden" is the same as the Minotaur bosses at the end of [Release]], which together with the experiments described during the two adventures and the Unethical Experiments Mark, Cloak, or Bond received upon completion of Release depending on the player's class, suggests a commonality between them:
- "I've seen experiments like this before. My crew.... I don't want to talk about it." — Failsafe
- The guiding device used by the Vex in this adventure, and called alternately a Vex Hologram or Holomarker, have a similar appearance to the Oracles of the Vault of Glass. A visual trait shared with several Ghost Scans on Nessus, namely NE-SC-2, NE-MST-2, NE-TAN-2 and NE-CST-2. The latter scan identifies these as belonging to a class of security nodes, so the visual similarities between the Hologram, the Scans and the object may just be coincidental or the product of asset reuse.
