Monolith creatures

During his expedition beyond the Solar System, the Drifter and his crew encountered strange alien creatures on a desolate, icy planet. These creatures were found to share common bioenergetics with the Hive, but otherwise did not resemble Hive or any other known species, being described as "gooey, vacuous [forms] with no head". Of special note was their ability to project a field which suppressed Light. Many were found imprisoned within monolith-like alien structures, apparently in the form of cryogenic suspension, but others were also found roaming free around the planet.

As a result of the Light-suppressing field they generated, Guardians that died within close proximity of these creatures were incapable of being revived by their Ghosts, resulting in the Guardian's permanent death.

Trivia

• The Drifter's description of these creatures is reminiscent of the mysterious shadowy creatures depicted in Cayde's Treasure Island Book, drawings of which accompany his description of the Collapse.
• The creatures also seem to share characteristics with the Dread, notably in that both are apparently headless and can even nullify Light; their described abilities are also somewhat similar to the Suppressor devices provided by the Witness to the Shadow Legion during the invasion of Neomuna. However, the creatures encountered by the Drifter are described as amorphous and being passive in behavior, neither of which apply to the Dread.
  • A possible but unlikely theory is that the creatures encountered by the Drifter’s crew are possibly an iteration of the Witness's "finalized" experiments; given that the monolith aesthetics of the facilities draws parallels to Pyramid and Precursor architecture shown in-game.
• The planet where the Drifter encountered these creatures is very likely the Cabal Empire's lost Athenaeum World X, based on matching descriptions in the Chronicon. However, it should be noted that the Chronicon, particularly its "future" entries, is likely not a reliable source of information.
