Oryx, the Taken King is a mysterious Hive entity born from the Darkness, that is believed to be the God-King of the Hive and the source of their powers. Oryx is even the creator of the dreaded Crota, the God-Knight who slew thousands of Guardians during the Great Disaster. He is also the master of the Taken, an amalgam of different enemies corrupted by the Darkness in service of the Taken King himself.

Overview

While the exact nature of this entity is unknown to the Guardians, the name Oryx appears often enough in Hive rituals that it cannot be ignored. Shrines dedicated to Oryx have been built throughout the Solar System, and are known to be used by the Hive to communicate with some dark power across the universe. Osiris studied the Hive extensively and foretold that the Spawn of Crota would pave the way for Oryx's coming by "snuffing out the worlds of Light".[1] The Hive sect known as the Blood of Oryx are thought to be the direct servants of Oryx itself, though it is believed that he is the master of all Hive sects.[2]

Oryx appears to be able to take multiple forms, with his first being that of a floating shadowy figure, seen most often outside of the Dreadnaught. Within the dreadnaught his appearance is less ethereal and more physical, possibly his true form, which is a bipedal demonic-looking entity with horns, wings, and a large sword.[3]

After the death of his son, Crota, Oryx brought his Dreadnaught into the Solar system, leading the Taken in search of revenge.[4]

Gameplay

Oryx will appear as the final raid boss in The Taken King.[4]

Quotes

  • "YOU. TOOK. MY. SON!!! I...WILL TAKE YOU!"[7]

Trivia

The description of Oryx's coming is reminiscent of the Darkness's arrival in the Solar system.[8] This could imply some sort of connection.
